Many changes have occurred through the 17th and 18th centuries. People questioned traditions and hoped to discover new ways to make society better. The people who came up with these new methods were called philosophers. Four philosophers: John Locke, Mary Wollstonecraft, Adam Smith, and Voltaire each focused on different parts of society. These four philosophers all share the same main idea; people should make their own decisions and live life their own way. Locke, Wollstonecraft, Smith and Voltaire all argued that people should have a right to make their own choices, not a ruler.

Wollstonecraft focused on women’s rights in society rather than the religious or governmental side of society. In her book A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, written in 1792, she writes, “...women must be allowed to find their virtue on knowledge.” Wollstonecraft states that women should have the right to get an education without a man’s permission and should “render [her]independent.” She adds, “In short...the only method of leading women to fulfill their peculiar duties is to free them from all restraint.” Wollstonecraft argues for women’s rights to participate in inherited rights of mankind. Smith focuses on mercantilism and how man can benefit society without knowing. I'm Smith's book The Wealth of Nations, written in 1776, he states, “Every man… is left perfectly free to pursue his own interests in his own way…” Smith says that man are able to make their own choices and should. People don't need a ruler because rules are second nature for humans. People can create a society that doesn't have an overlord and they will still have rules. Smith goes on and adds, “By pursuing his own interest he frequently promotes that of the society more [effectively] than when he really intends to…” Man will work in order to be successful for themselves yet it also benefits society.
