In 1995, Kenya Bureau of Standards banned many cosmetic products used for skin lightening due to the negative medical issues concerning safety. In many parts of the world, women of color are obsessed with making their skins lighter. Black women in Africa are no exception as the Kenyan example indicates. However, there are some reasons that make colored women prefer to make their skin color lighter that can be positive effects. The social and professional success of the women of color is affected by power, social stratification, and privileges that lead to giving the women of color a weak image, putting them in lower economic class, and lacking marriage’ opportunities. First of all, Women of color in are considered unfortunate in the eyes of society that give them a weaker image. The color of the skin plays a fundamental in achieving personal goals towards social or professional success. In a society where white skin is a sign of good image of success and attractiveness (Lacey, 2002). they use the products to win the men’s attraction that favor white skin over dark skin in getting. Being a woman I will always be at a disadvantage to men and other women who are white. Men and white women are seen to be superior by society. Peggy McIntosh, American radical feminist and anti-racism activist, stated in “White Privilege and Male Privilege,” “…I have noticed men’s unwillingness to grant that they are over privileged in the curriculum, even though they may grant that women are disadvantaged” (McIntosh 140). Men are in denial that they are over privileged and does not admit it because of society. Society make men believe that they are superior then women. I think it is wrong because I am a woman and if I wanted to be a CEO of a company, it would be harder for me become one than it would be for a man. Even if I do become one through hard work, I would still be paid less than any men who are CEOs and I would be seen as a bitch. I feel that if I can do anything any other man can do, I should get paid the same by my abilities and not by what my sex is. Is everyone really given an equal opportunity for success? So many different factors work against an individual. Think about all the things one does not have control over. People are held back by their race, gender, and history. In Zora Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Tori Morrison's Sula, both authors use metaphor, imagery, allusion, and arrangement to demonstrate their purpose; that purpose is to show that it is impossible for black women to entirely rise above powerlessness in their communities and reach their full potential due to the many things they cannot control.

Researchers have concluded that their racial and gender classification may explain their vulnerable position within society, despite the strides these women have made in education, employment, and progressing their families and communities (Chavous et al. 2004; Childs 2005; Hunter 1998; Settles 2006; Wilkins 2012). The ideal female beauty in American culture is predominately white (Bankhead & Johnson, 2014). Throughout U.S history, women’s mainstream beauty ideal has been historically based on white standards such as having blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin, a thin ideal body, straight hair, and thin lips (West, 1995; Yamamiya, Cash, Melynk, Posavac, & Posavac, 2005; Leslie, 1995). Therefore, the features of African American women tend to be viewed as undesirable and unattractive compared to the European standards of beauty (Awad, Norwood, Taylor, Martinez, McClain, Jones, Holman, & Hilliard, 2014). According to Ashe (1995), “African beauty, body and hair have been racialized, with slim/”keen” European features being the accepted standard of beauty since enslaved Africans was forcefully brought to the Americas.” The physical characteristics of Black women such as having broad noses, brown skin, full lips, large buttocks and course hair has been looked down upon throughout United States history (Byrd & Tharps, 2001). In effect, the standard of beauty of European features that were forced on slaves are internalized and currently seen in the standard of beauty of African Americans (A.A) (Chapman, 2007). Fire needs wood to burn, water needs heat to boil, and the women’s right movement needed abolition to begin the real fight. The women’s rights movement of the nineteenth century emerged out of abolition activism because it was not until after abolitionist groups formed and began fighting slavery that women began to realize they had no rights themselves and began their own fight.
Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions influenced the American Revolution. Wheatley through her literature, which included poems sent to George Washington and a poem written in regards to King George the third, was able to set an example of how African Americans are intelligent and equal human beings of the American colonies. Elizabeth Wheatley went against all odds to obtain her freedom by suing her slave owner and winning the case in court. Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions during the American Revolution affected what liberty rights they would obtain years after the American Revolution ended.
Everyone seems to praise Asians for their skinny bodies and healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, they don’t realize the hardship that Asian children have to endure growing up. Since young Asians children are under careful watch about their body size, looks, and weight. Making sure the girls fit into the mold that society has set out for them. No matter where a person goes, people are already having a judgment on how she looks. Any sign of body imperfection, particularly overweight, will bring the wrath of society, making comments about how bad the girl looks, how she should lose weight to match with their ideal image.

Contrary to popular belief, race is actually almost completely socially constructed, it is not biological. Further, a human’s DNA does not differentiate at all to create any specific race. However, society has categorized certain things, such as skin color, to determine the race of individuals. Many may agree with the old saying that “beauty is only skin deep,” but does beauty come in a particular shade of color? This question is very debatable for many, but the fact of the matter is that human beings are born in array of skin tones. These differences in skin tone are used to categorize people into different ethnic groups. Lopez proposes that“ethnic identity is a type of group identity that is related to a better outcome because it provides a sense of belonging or cultural embeddedness.”(p.102) Dr. Ronald Hall (2006) suggests that in America minorities or people of color are called black in relative terms to the majority who are of European descent i.e. white. Some studies have discovered that a more “ethnic appearance” is usually assessed by a darker skin color i.e, black and is associated with a worse outcome in life (Lopez, 2008) In contrast, beauty, wealth and overall appeal are associated with physiological proximity to the white power structure i.e., light skin. (Hall, 2006) It appears as though desirable skin complexions are culturally relative.
Multiracial Feminism: Recasting the Chronology of Second Wave Feminism introduces ideas by Becky Thompson that contradict the “traditional” teachings of the Second Wave of feminism. In the essay “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body,” author and philosopher Susan Bordo discusses the history and current state of male representation in advertisements. While using her feminist background, Bordo compares and contrasts the aspects of how men and women are portrayed in the public eye. She claims that there has been a paradigm shift the media with the theory that not just women are being objectified in the public eye, but also men too. Since the mid-1970s, with the introduction of Calvin Klein commercials, men have started to become more dehumanized and regarded as sex symbols. In a similar fashion to how Bordo describes gender, race plays a similar role in the media. People of all different ethnicities and cultures are being categorized into an oversimplified and usually unfair image by the media over basic characteristics.

Representations of women were a crucial subject of discussion especially in the concepts of the gaze that often refers to women as objects of the active gaze. The gaze establishes relationships of power, representing different codes such as dominance and subjugation, difference and otherness (Sturken and Cartwright 2009: 111).
