Women In Math
Over the past 20 years the number of women in the fields of math, science and engineering have grown at astronomical rate. The number of women which hold positions in these fields has more than doubled. In post secondary education women are filling up the lecture halls and labs where in the past where it was rare to see a woman at all. If a woman was able withstand the pressure that was put on her it was more than likely that she wouldn't even be hired.
Many organizations have been established to help young women to prosue carriers in either math, science and engineering. A few examples of these organizations are, AWM (Association for Women in Mathematics), WISE (Women In Sience and
Engineering), ASEM (Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics) and many others.
Many young women do not prosue carriers in math for one or more key reasons.
One is that they have no female role models to look up to or any famous females in that field to inspire them. Another is that they are often disgouraged by others, usually family members, “ Why don't you be like your mother and stay home and raise the children.” is a common line used. This is most likely because the parents don't want to see their daughter go out and fall flat on her face when she doesn't make it. There is little support from others if a woman wants to go into these fields. Equal opportunities is also a large factor in this, either as a decision maker wether to go into the field or not or cold hard facts. Facts like 90 percent of engineering, math and science position are held by men, this means that they don't hire very many women.
Another reason is that the maybe lacking the self-esteem within their self.
This could be because of the scary numbers that are related to women and math, science and engineering positions. Or that they could be struggling in that area. Another factor could be that they fear that hiring opportunities are very

Everything in our lifestyles has changed from when these statistic we done. Women are starting to take more of a turn away from “pleasing” men and are starting to worry more about their character and goals. Women are starting to want respect from men and I saw two good examples in class. The first was about the Chola’s and how they need to feel respect and independent. The second example was the video about women in the work force. In the video I saw how men feel they have an upper hand in industry jobs and they way woman have to work around it for the sake of them having a job. At the end the woman that had spoke up was the voice, which had gotten other woman to speak up about the safety in their working environment. The change for gender socialization is coming and it will change in how woman are viewed extremely in the work force and in everyday life. Which I believe will make an impact on how future children are raised and the idealization will not be to one-sided in favor of boys and

STEM is best known as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM for many years has been primarily seen as and stereotyped into a masculine work field. But as of recent years, while it expands, more and more women have been rising in these fields. Throughout history, women have been looked down upon and seen as insubordinate and incapable. Women were never viewed as equal to men until about the 1950s. History will also tell us that men dominated the mathematical scene and have made the biggest contributions in that field, yet this does not seem to be the case. Women have had just as big an impact on math as men have, if not a bigger contribution.They still continue to rock the mathematical world today. Various women such as Hypatia from the ancient Greeks, Grace Chisholm Young from England at the turn of the century, to Mary Fairfax Somerville from the Imperialist English, and Maria Gaetana Agnesi from Modern Enlightenment in Italy have all contributed in major ways to the growth of mathematics. A mathematician is not defined by a persons gender, but what they have to offer the our world of discovery in the past, present and future.
Females always seem to lag behind boys in two school subjects, math and science. For some reason our society have greatly stereotyped women as being inadequate and incapable of possessing these skills. Girls do not become independent problem solvers and do not do well in high-level cognitive tasks. In result girls develop a bad attitude towards math and science and think of it as a male domain (Silvey and Smart, 1982). Teachers also can contribute to this loss of interest in these subjects.
