With reference to Dulce et Decorum Est and Anthem for Doomed Youth by
Wilfred Owen, examine how Wilfred Owen responded to the jingoistic
poetryof Jessie Pope.
" Who's for the game? The biggest that's played"
================================================
The above quotation is from Jessie Pope's "who's for the game."
Wilfred Owen was born in Shropshire on the 18th of March 1893. Owen
volunteered for the army in 1914 when the First World War broke out.
After training he became an officer and was sent to France at the end
of 1916. The following year, Owen took part in the attacks on the
German Hindenburg line, where he was suffering from shell shock after
a shell burst near him. The horrors of battle quickly transformed Owen
and the way he thought about life. The reasons behind Wilfred Owen's
poems were to indoctrinate the people of those times. "Dulce et
Decorum Est" was to enable Owen to show the true meanings of war and
to over right the untruthful poem of Jessie Pope and her propaganda
technics.

Jessie Pope's poem " Who's For The Game?"

There are sporting references such as "Who'll toe the line," "Who'll
grip and tackle the job unafraid." Also there are parts of the poem
that incur guilt upon the men who hadn't enlisted. "Who wants a turn
to himself in the show," "And who wants a seat in the stand?" and "Who
thinks he'd rather sit tight?" this technique makes the reader feel
responsible and pushes them to join up and be a part of 'the game'.
The rhythm of the poem gives an impression of a rhyme, like something
you could sing to, this is a strange way to write about the solemn

...arison is that of dusk, to the
drawing down of blinds in a house in mourning. "And each slow dusk a
drawing down of blinds," creating the image that dusk is like a blind
that is being lowered. The funeral is over and rhetorical question
that Owen asked at the beginning of the first stanza has been answered
and the noise has vanished. All is now quiet. The long, heav 'd'
sounds really drag the ending on and draw the poem to a deliberate
close.
In conclusion, I feel that both poets are effective, but they both
present such different pictures of war. Owen's poems are excellent
examples of poetry portraying the realism of war, whereas Pope's poem
is an excellent example of the unfortunate attitude cultivated on the
home front. The contrast between the two allows the reader to see the
reality of the First World War from two immensely different
perspectives.
Cicero’s essay, titled On Duties, presents a practical approach concerning the moral obligations of a political man in the form of correspondence with his young son. Essential to the text, the incentive for Cicero to undertake On Duties emerges from his depleted hope to restore the Republic within his lifetime. Cicero therefore places such aspirations in the hands of his posterity. The foremost purpose of On Duties considers three obstacles, divided into separate Books, when deciding a course of action. Book I prefatorily states, “in the first place, men may be uncertain whether the thing that falls under consideration is an honorable or a dishonorable thing to do” (5). Cicero addresses the ambiguities present under this consideration and codifies a means through which one can reach a justifiable decision. Subsequently, he expounds the four essential virtues—wisdom, justice, magnanimity or greatness of spirit, and seemliness—all of which are necessary to conduct oneself honorably. As a result, the virtues intertwine to create an unassailable foundation upon which one can defend their actions. Cicero’s expatiation of the four virtues, though revolving around justice and political in context, illuminates the need for wisdom among the populace in order to discern a leader’s motivations. This subtly becomes apparent as Cicero, advising his son on how to dictate decision-making, issues caveats regarding the deceptions that occur under the guise of virtue.
The declaration of Independence is an amazing document. It’s authors portrayed their anger, their disappointment, and their dream in a new government through this document. A government meant to protect the people's rights. They manifested this dream. they used logos and pathos along with other forms of rhetoric to show the people the urgency of their situation.
why Bill wants to join them that’s pretty obvious when he starts asking questions and one guy stands up
Persuasion is a natural method many people use to influence a person's beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations, or behaviors in a situation. Many include, bribing parents to buy clothes to even lending someone money. Either way, people all over the world use words or phrases to convince or sway a person into believing them. Just as many people have used rhetorical appeals to persuade someone, Anthony also uses the rhetorical appeals; heartfelt pathos, questionable logos and evident ethos in William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar to convince his audience that Caesar was not ambitious and that Caesar was innocent
What is honor? Honor coins an individual’s nature. A principle that exists on the purpose of perception, a martyr willing to conform and accomplish. In the case of Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus was the most honorable of men. A brother to Caesar, but a father to Rome, he persist and perish for the future of his child. The idea of ignorance, and the belief of a false faith, turns this noble man toward a vulgar grave, with virtuous notions.
BRENT (to his friends). Look, guys, I guess someone forgot how to use a straw! (Brent and his friends laugh and begin to walk away.)
In the end, the characters of Julius Caesar all have more complicated relationships with honor than they appear at first glance. Brutus, while well intentioned and seemingly honorable, cannot see the line that separates honor from murder, Cassius who appears dishonorable in every way aims, at least in part, to protect rome and its people and Portia who appears dedicated loyal and honorable, commits suicide and believes the lies she is told about her self, beneath the surface of these characters, lies complex motives and twisted logic, which makes singling them out as honorable or dishonorable, nearly impossible, as they are very human, and humans are rarely one or the
As we regained consciousness one by one, we found ourselves on a deserted island. After gathering all the food and supplies we could find, it was decided that certain rules should be enacted so we may live together civilly. We need to maintain our politeness and courtesy as we do not know how long we may be stranded on the island. To preserve what we have left, the first rule that should be enacted must benefit the group as a whole. The rule to have every able bodied individual work to benefit the group. That means that a person must work at gather food, water, build shelter, and any other tasks that are required. This should be the most important rule as it will maintain order and will provide justice in our group.
Costello is asking the name of the first baseman and Abbott answers “Who is on first” to which Costello replies, “I’m asking you who’s on first” but he is really asking, “Whose on first?’ meaning whom a pronoun. Although Abbott understands him as saying the first baseman’s man name ‘Who’ which would be used as a noun here. Which can lead to the violation of avoiding obscurity of expression. Throughout this skit the exchanges between the two leads to many misunderstandings and frustrations due to the play on words. Neither man is actually listening to the other however, each is totally convinced that the other is sharing his perspective of the conversation. Which is what contributes to the humor each man has a different perspective of the
all young people may think it is a honour to die for your country, but
Both Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” as well as “next to of course god america i” written by E.E. Cummings preform critic on war propaganda used during the first world war. Besides this the influence war propaganda has on the soldiers as individuals as well as on war in more general terms, is being portrayed in a sophisticated and progressive manner. By depicting war with the use of strong literary features such as imagery or sarcasm both texts demonstrate the harshness of war as well as attempt to convey that war propaganda is, as Owen states “an old lie”, and that it certainly is not honourable to die for one’s country. Therefore, the aim of both writers can be said to be to frontally attack any form of war promotion or support offensively
Is it really sweet and fitting to die for one's country? This may seem glorious to some, but to those who have studied World War I and its terrible consequences, this seems a lie. The poet Wilfred Owen was a participant in this war, and wrote the poem "Dulce et Decorum Est" ("It is sweet and fitting [to die for one's country]") to his poet friends about the voracity, hopelessness, and futility of war, and the desperate plight of the soldiers involved. Almost seventy-five years later, the popular artist Sting worried about the world in which his son was growing up, a world in which older, experienced adults took advantage of innocent children to increase their own power. Using World War I as a comparison to his own time, he wrote the song "Children's Crusade" about these scheming, power-hungry people. Both these poets describe a war in which children were abused, controlled by other's selfish wants. Although Sting mainly uses strong allusions to describe the soldiers' loss of innocence, Owen's poem uses jarring, tangible images of reality that are emotionally more universal.
Being that the others look up to him so much, they do not really notice this. Because he is in
“Compare and contrast “The Soldier” by Rupert Brooke with “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen with regard to theme, tone, imagery, diction, metre, etc”
History is an important to today’s modern society because it shows the attitudes and culture of that society and shows patterns of society that can teach us how to avoid such things as genocide and war. The piece that will be adapted in this essay is Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen which will be adapted into a movie. There will have to be some changes to the poem to the length of the plot and setting up the beginning of the story. The movie will also have to keep with the overall theme of the story that war is grim and the effect that war has on soldiers. With an adaptation to a new medium, aspects of the poem could be lost or strengthen. The visuals would be strengthened because the poem has descriptive imagery and the movie would be able to stress the imagery. But with a change to a movie the overall message could be lost because of the way that people would perceive the movie, if they just watch to see World War one in action then they will miss the message about war. The reason why this piece is interesting to adapt because of the message that Wilfred Owen had that war is horrible and the façade of the leaders of war.
