For Esme-With Love and Squalor and Atticus Mood is what the reader feels while reading a story or scene. It’s not the reader’s emotions, but the atmosphere of a scene or story. It’s what the reader reads or feels or notices. In both of these stories (For Esme-With Love and Squalor and Atticus) characters grows somewhere between the opening sentence and the final paragraph. In the book Atticus opens in winter on the high plains of Colorado. It begins as an unadventurous story about the relationship between a father (Atticus) and his troubled adult son (Scott). Scott, an alcoholic, a druggie, and a previous mental patient, had constantly been Atticus’s problematic child. Atticus takes a phone call to tell him the overwhelming news that his son Scott has …show more content…
When Atticus gets to Mexico Renata, Scott’s sometime lover welcomes him. Renata takes Atticus to the locations where Scott visited, to the funeral where Atticus sees Scott’s frightening body, and to the house where Scott killed himself. Not everything Atticus grasps, nevertheless seems to make sense. The garments Scott died in don’t have steady blood marks. Atticus starts to examine Scott’s life, and he concludes that Scott had been assassinated. Atticus tracks the evidences to the basement of a church, which is populated by homeless people, thus finding his son Scott alive in the church basement. Scott then takes up the narrative himself to justify the events that led up to the incongruous situation. He then explains how he unintentionally ran over a woman one night while being intoxicated. A man named Reinhardt, who looked vastly like him had saved him assist escape the scene. Nonetheless, the dead woman’s fiancé discovers the truth, wherein he shows up to Scotts house for payback, thus killing Reinhardt instead. Scott saw the assassination a way of avoiding his tortuous presence and redeeming his life; consequently he made the
How are the characters of Atticus and Jack alike and how are they different? Choose at least two traits to compare them.
the reader into the book with the use of imagery, syntax, and figurative language. Also, the story was good, Atticus was like a modern story about the Prodigal Son Parable. The book was interesting to read and enjoyable. However, the book was all over the place. It started off with Scott coming over and then Scott dying and then finding Scott and then Scott’s point of view of what caused him to fake his death. If the reader was not able to fully understand what was going on throughout each chapter, the reader would have been lost. The shift of point of view confuses the reader for a little bit but then it all starts to click. This book will have a lasting effect on me
The stories To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Scarlet Ibis may not be identical, but they are beautiful stories that send the message of being kind to everyone, and are suffused with symbolism. Doodle was a human being like everyone else, yet Brother was ashamed of him simply because he was different. Or exotic, like a scarlet ibis. On page 419 of The Scarlet Ibis it says, “...I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This clearly states that Brother was ashamed of Doodle.
Atticu Finch is one of they key characters in the book who leads by example and shows what courage is. In chapter nine, Atticus takes a case to defend a Negro who has been accused of raping Bob Ewell’s daughter Mayella444. Atticus, the father of main characters Scout and Jem Finch, loves and cares for his children, although since the children’s mother passed away when they were at a young age, Atticus is not always sure of how to fill her role. In chapter thirteen, Aunt Alexandra stays with the Finch family so that she can help them if anything happens while Atticus defends the black man, Tom Robinson. Atticus has always been respected in the town of Macomb, until he takes the Robinson case, which leads to controversy within his friends and his family. On several different instances, the towns people tried to convince him not to, and o...
In addition to being a lawyer, Atticus enjoys being a father to Jem and Scout. When Jem and Scout found out that their father would be defending a black person, they knew immediately that there would be much controversy, humiliation from the people of Maycomb and great difficulty keeping Tom alive for the trial. It was not long when Atticus had to leave the house very late to go to jail, where Tom was kept because many white people wanted to kill him. Worrying about their father, Jem and Scout sneak out of the house to find him. A self-appointed lynch mob has gathered on the jail to take justice into their own hands. Scout decides to talk to Walter Cunningham, one of the members of the mob. She talks about how her father Atticus thought that "entailments are bad "(154 ) " and that his boy Walter is a real nice boy and tell him I said hey"(154). Upon hearing this, the mob realized that Atticus cannot be all bad if he has such a nice daughter as Scout. Atticus, with some unexpected help from his children, faces down the mob and cause them to break up the potential lynching of the man behind bars. Having gone to a black church earlier, the children found out that Tom is actually a kind person, church-going and a good husband and father to his children.
Mood is how the audience feels about a piece of literature. This differs from tone because tone is the author’s mood about a piece of literature. Suspense and mood are often closely connected because how you feel about a text can help create suspense. If you feel tense or nervous about something that will add to the suspense already there; however, if you feel devastated or depressed about something, it may not add the same amount of suspense as it could’ve if it made you feel tense or nervous. An example of mood in Cujo is when Stephen King wrote, “She saw the dog’s tail and the top of its broad back over the hood of the Pinto. It was going around to Tad’s side of the car -- And Tad’s window wasn’t shut.” The mood of this piece of text evidence is nervous and maybe a little bit scared of what will happen to Tad. The mood in this part of the excerpt adds to the suspense because the suspense of this excerpt is already making you feel anxious, and the mood makes the suspense stronger. Another example of mood in Cujo is when Donna first heard Cujo growl. It had seemed directionless to her. It was nowhere and everywhere at the same time. She finally figured out that it came from the garage. The mood here would be nightmarish and a little nervous. This is because the reader would read the paragraph and think that it was something out of a nightmare, and they would be nervous for Donna because they wouldn’t want her getting hurt. The mood
Beyond buzzing courtrooms of segregated townspeople and skies raining ashes reeking of kerosene, Harper Lee’s Atticus Finch (To Kill A Mockingbird), and Ray Bradbury’s Guy Montag (Fahrenheit 451) are both sui generis characters in their own stories because of their shared similarities deeper than eyes, ears, and noses. From their burning passions for knowledge and literature to their patient, unbiased hearts, the two men shake their communities to new realizations. Their idiosyncrasies made the relentless lawyer and runaway fireman standout in a society where laws are governed by people blinded in the bliss of oblivion.
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, we are introduced to the character Atticus. He is a hard working single parent of two who is kindhearted and does what he believes is right and treats everyone equally. Being such a hard worker, his mind is often on work, even at home, which means less time spent with his children. While Atticus may make some mistakes as a parent, overall he is an admirable father.
"It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars was the bravest man who ever lived” (Lee 134.) Atticus raised his children in a time period where society treated you by the color of your skin and not for who you are. Atticus and his children are full of confidence and bravery during a time of inequality, depression, and racism. Atticus stood up to what he believed in and he was most importantly brave. His daughter Scout had to stand up to all the hatred she was getting for her father's trial. Atticus took many risks knowing that the outcome may not be favorable towards him. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird , Harper Lee displays that Bravery and Courage are important life traits, and can help
The plot recounted the story of Atticus Finch a local attorney who was called upon to defend Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man falsely accused of raping and beating Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Atticus had two children, Scout and Jem Finch, and they had the task of living in a society where they were mocked and jeered because their father decided to defend a “negro.” Alongside this, the Finch children and their friend Dill was fascinated with the town’s mysterious character named Arthur “Boo” Radley. The first plot revealed the children’s antics to get Boo to come out of seclusion. As the novel advanced, the second plot was the children’s interest in the trial of Tom Robinson. When Tom was convicted of a crime, the children witnessed firsthand the injustices within their society.
Mood helps in creating an atmosphere in a literary work by means of setting, theme, diction and tone. Throughout the book To kill a mockingbird the author wanted the mood to be sorrowful or vexed or just fret about how the people are acting because seeing how things were being treated or how people acted would be enough to make you feel angry or sad or worried for the people who were in the book. You always wanted to know what was going to come next or how something would end. Vex was a very prominent mood in this story and is definitely the most relevant.
Entry 1: I feel as though the Lord only caters to white people. I’m really shaking and I just keep shaking but I am staying strong. There was an empty cell between me and all of the other prisoners. Ms. Emma came to see me but I was quiet and just starring at the ceiling. I didn’t care about anything, nothing mattered to me. I am going to die soon anyway so what’s the point. (“What it go’n feel like”(pg. 225).
parallelism between Atticus from How To Kill a Mockingbird and Atticus. The reader would believe that the story might be about the same character. The reader is also able to interpret that maybe the main character is similar to Atticus in How To Kill a Mockingbird. However, if the reader has not read How To Kill a Mockingbird, the title has no significance to the person. The only thing the reader can guess is that the story is about a person named Atticus. He would believe the story revolves around Atticus and talks about Atticus’ life. The thought the reader would get at the beginning of the book stayed the same at the end. The reader finds out that the book

Scout Finch, the youngest child of Atticus Finch, narrates the story. It is summer and her cousin Dill and brother Jem are her companions and playmates. They play all summer long until Dill has to go back home to Maridian and Scout and her brother start school. The Atticus’ maid, a black woman by the name of Calpurnia, is like a mother to the children. While playing, Scout and Jem discover small trinkets in a knothole in an old oak tree on the Radley property. Summer rolls around again and Dill comes back to visit. A sence of discrimination develops towards the Radley’s because of their race. Scout forms a friendship with her neighbor Miss Maudie, whose house is later burnt down. She tells Scout to respect Boo Radley and treat him like a person. Treasures keep appearing in the knothole until it is filled with cement to prevent decay. As winter comes it snows for the first time in a century. Boo gives scout a blanket and she finally understands her father’s and Miss Maudie’s point of view and treats him respectfully. Scout and Jem receive air guns for Christmas, and promise Atticus never to shoot a mockingbird, for they are peaceful and don’t deserve to die in that manner. Atticus then takes a case defending a black man accused of rape. He knows that such a case will bring trouble for his family but he takes it anyways. This is the sense of courage he tries to instill in his son Jem.
