Anne Tyler’s “With All Flags Flying” is a short story about an old man’s experience growing old and having someone take care of him. All of his daughters want to take care of him and have him stay at their house, but he is determined to live at a nursing home. This short story explores the theme that humans are innately selfish. One way in which this story clearly delves into the theme that humans are innately selfish is in the actions of the old man. In the following quote, when the old man, Mr.Carpenter, is staying with his family, he refuses his daughters’ offers to stay with him over and over again. “His other daughters called long distance from all across the county and begged him to come to them if he wouldn’t stay with Clara.
They had room or they would make room…. To all of them he gave the same answer: ‘I’ve made my decision’” (Tyler 219). Here we see that the old man is being selfish when he ignores his family’s offers and puts himself above their feelings by putting himself in a nursing home. Disregarding his family,(participial phrase) he chooses to move into the old folk’s home. They want to be with him, but he pushes them off. Not only does the old man act selfish when he refuses his daughters’ offers to stay with them, but he also acts selfishly when he doesn’t realize that some of his daughters bought houses that were big enough to fit him, yet he refuses to live with them. Although the family has built their life around him, he disregards their feelings and thinks only of himself. Selfishly, the old man thinks not of his family’s feelings but of his own, this paragraph delves into the theme that humans are innately selfish. Another way in which the author explores the theme that humans are innately selfish is in how the family tries to hang onto the old man and doesn’t let him move on. In the following quote, one of the daughters refuses to talk to him about him moving into a nursing home and tries to get him to stay. “‘Why, Daddy you know we always asked you to come and live with us.’" ‘I know that, but I decided on an old folks’ home.’ ‘We couldn’t do that. We won’t even talk about it’” (Tyler 217). This quote shows how the family won’t let go of Mr.Carpenter and begs him to stay. It seems as if they are trying to get him to stay with them by making him feel guilty. The family needs to accept the old man’s choices and help him move on. Not only does the family act selfish when the old man tries to get into a nursing home, but they also act selfish when Francie, the thirteen year old girl, only talks about herself and never once thinks about the old grandpa's suffering. This quote and evidence exemplifies the fact that humans are innately selfish. Throughout this short story Tyler explores the theme that humans are inherently self-centered. Selfishness can lead to hurt feelings and broken relationships. “With All Flags Flying” clearly and efficiently analyzes the theme that humans are innately self-centered.
In many ways survival requires selfishness in some situations. Throughout the book, “Night” by Ellie Weisel there was some selfishness in different jewish families when it came to survival. I can’t say the same for the, “1972 Andes Flight Disaster” because the survivors weren’t being selfish with the decisions they made. This goes for, “Is Survival Selfish” article by Lane Walker because in the different situations mentioned in the article there was no selfishness involved. It’s about your overall opinion on the situation, here's my opinion.
I believe that the story Night by Elie Weisel, you need selfishness in order to survive the work camp. One piece of evidence when someone did a selfish act was when Block Altesta the person that ran the block said “But you must increase your chances.” “Before you go into the next room try to move your limbs, give yourself some color and most important don't be afraid” (Collections (308). It portrays selfishness because Block Altesta is telling them in order to survive you should just try to increase your chances by moving your limbs and giving yourself some color and his saying just do it for
One of the themes that was most prevalent in this short story was selfishness and
Selfishness is a common trait in the world, it’s not a hidden factor, but very well-known as being one’s self-interest. The story “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff, discusses how each character in the story deals with different kinds of selfish ways. One character, Tub, deals with eating problems and lies about it. Frank deals with a secret life that he is hiding from his wife. Kenny is always comparing something to his liking and if he does not like it then he will complain. Self-absorption is when someone is focused on their self and only themselves. It is known to be a regular’s human’s condition, it’s something majority of human beings have. Selfishness may also kick in during survival incidents. For example, a boy and his friends
Main characters often struggle with finding their self-worth, but the distinction between self-worth and selfishness may often be unclear. The protagonists of both Anthem, by Ayn Rand, and Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse, fluctuate between being self-aware and being selfish. If Equality is an honest narrator, then to describe him as selfish would be an incorrect understanding, because the laws in place by Equality 7-2521’s community strips every one of their individuality and, therefore, their humanity; however, to describe Siddhartha as selfish is a more accurate understanding, because Siddhartha never lost his humanity and only strives for his own desires.
My topic is God Bless America of Faith Ringgold. She is an African-American artist. She is not only a painter but also a writer, speaker and mixed media sculptor. Faith Ringgold was born on October 8th 1930 in Harlem, New York City and she is still alive. God Bless America is one of the most famous arts of Faith Ringgold that was produce in 1964. In that art, she used the oil on canvas and the dimension is 31x19 in. The subject of Faith Ringgold’s God Bless America is the woman on the background of American flag. There is another reason that make God Bless America became popular at that time. At that time, there was a Civil Right movement because the white prejudice against African American was enforced by the legal system. Therefore the theme
Selfishness is a disease of the soul that every person experiences several times throughout their life. To say that it has never been experienced would be hypocrisy. To say that it is a “good thing”, would be erroneous. Although as humans we like to lie to ourselves, it is no question that selfishness can make any person act like a fool. It consumes us and makes us into someone we are not. Whether it leads to getting people killed, falling in love, or buying alcohol, selfishness always leads to destruction.
All our childhood years, our parents have taught us the importance of being selfless. Maybe that is by sharing with your siblings growing up, or just taking care of your elder grandma when she’s feeling under the weather. This important life, quality has been embroidered into our skins from such a young age; that our hearts are willing to help others in need. I know that not everyone is as willing to be selfless as others, but that is just a part of life. You aren’t always going to pick the sweetest apple from the tree, or in other words, some people are just not as altruistic as others. Furthermore, I think an important theme shown among British literature is the importance of being selfless and how it can impact your life. Throughout the stories in Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales, the aspect of being selfless is shown greatly among its characters and how their decision to be that way impacts their lives.
John Steinbeck's Compassion for the Loneliness and Isolation Suffered by Ordinary People in Of Mice and Men
"Were born alone we live alone die alone. Only through love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that were not alone” Orson Welles. In this novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck focuses on the loneliness of California ranch life in the 1930’s. One of the most important things in the life is to have a friend, without friends people will suffer from loneliness like in this novel, not everyone in the novel has the same connection and special friendship like George and Lennie’s. Of Mice and Men is the story about lonely men who travel from ranch to ranch not really communicating with other ranch hands. Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife all were lonely and dealt with their loneliness in different ways.
In the short story “With All Flags Flying” an old man leaves his house and his family to live in an old folks home because that is what is best for him and what he thinks is best for his family. The old man seems to be leaving his family for the old folks home to benefit his family, but he also seems to be doing it for himself. Anne Tyler’s “With All Flags Flying” explores the theme that humans are innately selfish.
The Patriot is a fictional story directed by Roland Emmerich, based on the true events of the American Revolution. Set in colonial South Carolina in the year 1776, the story of a war hero attempting to escape the haunting memories of the French-Indian War is put in a difficult position and is torn between protecting his family and defending his country. Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, is a widowed man with seven children living a peaceful life at a plantation, who would do absolutely anything to protect his children. When the decision to enlist in the newly formed Continental Army is approached in court, Benjamin says that he absolutely will not fight, and when speaking to Col. Harry Burwell in court he says “this war will be fought not on the frontier or on some distant battlefield. But amongst us, among our homes.” He knows that many innocent people will die, and the safety of his children will be disrupted, so therefore he does not cast a vote. When questioned about his principles, he responds saying that he is a parent, and therefore does not have the luxury of principles; once again confirming that family is the most important aspect of life to him. On the other hand, his oldest son Gabriel, played by Heath Ledger, is the complete opposite; he is extremely eager to enlist in the newly formed Continental Army, and he feels as though it is his duty to enlist and fight for freedom and independence, therefore, against his father’s orders, he enlists immediately. As the war moves forward, Gabriel is seen injured, and along with other wounded militia men, they rest at Benjamin’s home. Colonel William Tavington, played by Jason Isaacs, along with other British soldiers become aware of this and take many militia men as prisone...
Upon making an honest and accurate assessment of his character, it seems evident that man is not such a creature divinely set apart from the trappings of selfishness and immorality. Rather than put man at either extreme, it seems more accurate to describe man as a creature whose tendency is to look out for himself first, as a means of survival. It is true that on many levels humans act in a cooperative way to benefit all -- but does that warrant a claim that man is genetically altruistic? Perhaps the reasoning behind his actions would lead to another view? As Ridley examines man's dependency upon others in his species, it becomes apparent that man is not necessarily a savage beast out to do everyone in, but rather a lone creature trying to ensure his survival.
Mary Wilkins wrote her short story, “The Revolt of ‘Mother’” which mainly focused on a woman to stand up against an authoritarian husband. She wrote it during the time when woman had no voice and counted as a second citizen if not a slave. The writer realized that speaking out is the only chain breaker, especially for the character of Sara Penn to free herself and others from the cage in it since she was seen not as better than as the cow Mr. Adoniram had. He built a new bunny for his animals while his wife stayed in an old, wall-paper tear, and a roof issue home. More than that, she waited for about 40 years to have a new house expecting him to build her. However, instead of keeping his word, he built a bunny to his animals while his wife
The first focus of living is surviving. Therefore, it does not follow logical reasoning to explore other aspects and enhancements of life until one establishes a sense of security in one’s ability to survive. Survival starts with an individual’s ability to endure, and ultimately progresses to an entire species’ ability to subsist. Selfishness is often viewed as morally wrong, however it may be necessary for individuals to think of themselves before others, in order to put them in a position to be able to help the others. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, this selfishness is demonstrated by the characters who are struggling to better their own lives; therefore, helping to better the lives of others is a secondary thought if it exists
