Witchcraft has been a part of history for thousands of years, being known as the practice of magic or sorcery. It began with a group of women in ancient times who were close with nature and could cure the sick with their knowledge of herbs and plants. After some time, people started to believe witches made packs with the Devil so they were seen as evil and feared by Christians. Through stereotypes, prejudices, and rumors, witches have become known as wicked creatures. The idea of witchcraft being evil first started in the 1600s. Considering witches used their powers to help people, the idea that they could be used to harm people occurred soon after. The people of these times thought anyone who was unlike themselves in any aspect was a witch. The rise of Christianity had a huge impact on the belief that witches worshiped the Devil instead of God. The church had a certain set of rules to follow and if people did not agree with them, they were automatically a sinner to them. Witches worshiped Mother Nature instead of God, so their beliefs were considered wrong. Killing those who disagreed with the church was looked at as God’s good work, so it was supported in the Christian religion. After many centuries of witchcraft continually being practiced, a religion was created. It is known as Wicca and includes both men and women. They believe nature is superior to humans and there are no sins, therefore no need for forgiveness. Witches believe in karma and reincarnation instead of heaven and hell. Witchcraft is still practiced by many through the use of rituals, spells, and chants. Throughout history, witchcraft has been shaped and distorted in many ways. The use of witchcraft is not always for evil but it is seen as so by society.
