Winter Light takes place on one afternoon, at a small church. The pastor Tomas, a widow, has questioned his own spiritual beliefs. His tiny congregation and the issues of them will keep him questioning his own beliefs throughout the film. The Persson's a couple in his church come to him in need of help. Mr Persson is very scared that China will drop and atomic bomb and this has made him increasingly uneasy. Unable to ease his pain and help him, because he has this internal struggle of doubt already Tomas urges Mr Persson to go home, feeling ashamed he cant help him. Mrs Persson comes back a little later that day and she tells Tomas her husband has committed suicide. Tomas is also dealing with a past lover Marta in his congregation who wont leave him alone. Marta is obsessed with Tomas and her behaviour has caused much gossip in their small church. …show more content…

As Tomas is holding the letter the camera takes you to Marta sitting down and starring into the camera, letting us know what she has written to her ex lover. It is revealed she is an atheist and has given up on religion, she also states that her family never needed religion to be happy or good people. She talks about how she had a rash and Tomas was disgusted by it, and his prayers never helped her get any better. This long framee was beautyfully shot, as Marta reads the letter the camera focuses only on her face.
