How does one define success? According to Winston Churchill, "Success is the ability to go from one failure to the other with no loss of enthusiasm." Though the definition may be versatile, the measurement is definite: Have you achieved your goals?
The task of one achieving a goal can be largely determined by the characteristics of an individual. These traits are:
Basing decisions on Values: Important and lasting beliefs or ideals that are key factors that affect our decisions and what we stand for. According to Gus Lee in his book Courage the Backbone of Leadership, the three high core values that we are to embody to achieve success are Integrity, Courage and Character.
Determination: For any task at hand, the pursuer should never gives up
due to failure. Self Awareness: When an individual recognizes his strengths and weaknesses and strives to improve daily, success can easily be achieved. Flexibility: The ability to adapt skills according to the situation aids in providing the best outcome. Discipline: The mutual respect one has for other. This characteristics are the cocktail in being successful as are based on the process that leads up to success rather than the success on its own. In the end, we are to define success in our own terms, achieve it by our own rules to build a life we are proud to live.
Success can be an extremely broad subject. There is an abounding amount of different views on what the “true” definition of success is. Personally, I believe that success is finding happiness. Success is waking up in the morning and not having to worry about whether or not the bills are going to be paid this month. Success is having a job that you enjoy going to every day. Success is having friends and family who love and support you. Success does not mean that one has to be exceedingly rich or have a lakeside mansion. As long as they are happy, they have succeeded in life.
Winston Churchill was born unexpectedly at Blenheim Palace, a country house in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. He was the youngest son of Randolph Churchill and Jennie Churchill. Addison stated, “Winston’s father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a younger son of the seventh duke of Marlborough, a substantial Tory statesman who had held office under Disraeli” (Addison 8). His father was a successful man. Addison added, “His mother, Jennie Churchill, was the daughter of a New York financier, Leonard Jerome, and his wife Clara” (Addison 7). He did not spend much time with his parents. Addison comments, “Neither of Churchill’s parents lacked affection for Winston, but they saw little of him and he felt profoundly neglected” (Addison 11). His parents were pushy and did not think much of him. Winston Churchill had two brothers, one of which was a bad person and the other was calm. The author describes the oldest brother, George, by stating, “He scandalized contemporaries with his adulterous affairs, sold off the Blenheim art collection, and died in his laboratory at Blenheim ‘with a terrible expression on his face” (Addison 9). Winston Churchill’s oldest brother had a bad history that he was known for. Winston Churchill had a wife name Clementine Hozier. He proposed to his wife at Blenheim Palace and they had five children. Clementine Hozier supported him through all of his fights and elections. However, Winston Churchill was a big achiever during his lifetime. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1953. He achieved many goals, such as being a soldier, politician, prime minister and writer. What Is a Success? Success is not earning a fat juicy check at the end of each month, or being part of a large social group filled with fraudulent people that appear as familiar faces. But it is a person discovering him or herself after they have been lost and establishing a sense of purpose that fills them with a warm, glowing sense of accomplishment. Success does not have one transparent definition, it has various meanings depending on what success means to the individual trying to achieve it. Success is surviving the loss.
Firstly, I will begin by identifying my core values. These values can be put into two separate groups. Firstly, there are instrumental values: courageousness, intellectualism, and helpfulness. When considering the myriad of ideals, many others were eliminated
The values that impact my decisions include: accountability, truth, honor, spirituality, reliability, kindness, ambition, family and compassion just to name a few. My grandfather was a successful business man in the 1930’s through 1980’s. He was a firm believer that you are only as good as your word. He did business with a hand shake and a smile. Teaching his grandchildren that if a man’s word is of no value, neither is he. Furthermore, he taught us the importance of sticking with your fundamental beliefs and principals. The value that is non-negotiable in my life is integrity. I believe it is important to be ethical, honest, truthful, reliably and trustworthy in every aspect of life. Successful is a simple word, however, the meaning of this word changes quite often. Each person has a different definition of success and that definition can change depending on the situation. Bob Dylan once wrote, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.” This a very broad definition of success and should not be used. The definition of success should be “the pursued goals have been adequately accomplished.”
I believe that core values are essential to construct my character and personality as a leader. My core values that I believe are as follow:
Success only truly comes with being happy. Happiness and success are the accomplices of one another. Someone cannot have accompanies without the other. Happiness brings success, and success brings even more happiness. Success, in the dictionary, is defined as the achievement of something desired planned or attempted. Therefore, success cannot be judged by anyone than oneself. It is a personal thing. It is the realization of goals, desires or plans made by one 's self. It is not measurable and yet is something we always use to compare others or appraise someone 's worth. Success, in one form or another, is something that someone should always be striving for. For some people it is something they will do subconsciously, and for others it will be something they will constantly labor for. Because success is something that is different for everyone, it is best that they measure their personal success by their sense of self worth instead of others. Although I have many core values, including diligence, happiness, helpfulness, true friendship, freedom, and intelligence, the most significant in my life are love, morality, honesty, and forgivingness. Throughout my life, these particular values have proved key to becoming the person I wished to be. “The term leadership involves our self-images and moral codes” (Values in Leadership). In order to lead and to be someone who upholds their values, one must be fully aware of what is important to them and what drives them.
I rely on the core values family, relationships, loyalty, harmony, and responsibility to guide my leadership.
The true definition of success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Although, many people have different perceptions of success. Success is judged by the individuals themselves. Success can be defined in many ways including: wealth, happiness, fame, etc. Success can be anything from material goods to concepts. It all depends on your concept and how you achieve your goals. You have to have persistence within yourself. Varying on your profession, you will need a certain skill level. Your definition of success can be suitable best for you, but not for others. It is about truly not giving up, reaching your full potential, and self-fulfillment.
Value-based leadership, in essence, becomes the enduring guiding principles that capture the organization’s strength and character. For the reason that the core values represent the soul of the organization, they are likely to remain steadfast in the face of changing market trends and fads (Warwick Business School, 2015).

Core values are principles that can help people know the difference between right and wrong, and help an individual live a better life. These principles define and distinguish a human, and they can be important and influencing one’s decisions in life.
Success takes many different definitions. People have different interpretations of what success really means. For me is as simple as: living well and laughing often. The idea of living well is a very broad statement. Living well, in my opinion is getting success in personal, social and professional life. If I can achieve all of these three levels of success, I believe that I have lived well.
