Oil is a non-renewable resource, commonly used today for energy, but it will be gone by 2040 if people constantly keep using it (Rickard 5). Because of this, the people on Earth need to find an alternative. Wind is a great option for people. Wind energy has come a long way through the years. Wind power has advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with, many people do not know the basics of the modern windmill, or how much they have improved throughout the years. A wind turbine is a machine that is used to change kinetic energy into electrical energy. The windmill most likely originated in present day Iran in the A.D. 600s. By the 1990s there were about 25,000 wind turbines in the world (Ilyin 332). In 2005, the United States Wind Energy Industry installed more than 2,300 megawatts in 22 states. Areas with good wind resources have the potential to supply up to 20 percent of the electricity in the United States (Passero 173). Some are more efficient than others, and some have more pros to them than cons. Wind power for example, generates electricity through huge spinning turbines. These huge turbines have blades that fit on the back of semis. Most wind turbines have three blades and sit atop a steel tubular tower. Their size ranges from about 80-foot-tall turbines that can power a single home, to utility-scale turbines that power hundreds of homes. Today’s wind turbines are like highly developed windmills.
I personally do not like windy days. However, wind could be helping us more than we realize. We could be using the wind to produce energy. This is what wind turbines do and now I will be researching them to determine the physics involved with them and how they work, their history, along with some statistics from the United States. Then I will go in-depth for the wind turbines of Texas, Washington, and Kansas and compare them.
Just as long as wind continues to blow and the sun shines, then wind power can produce energy to send to many different areas. There aren’t many locations that have continuous wind. And because of that, the widespread development of wind power isn’t as great as it could be. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to this energy source, the disadvantages should be taken just as seriously. Their wind power plants displace 4.5 billion pounds of CO2 each year with the 3 billion kilowatt hours of energy they produce. To put it into an environmental perspective, that is as much CO2 as could be absorbed by a forest covering 1100 square miles (Wind Energy Weekly). Although wind energy has little to no impact on the environment when it comes to air pollution or greenhouse gases, there are other environmental concerns surrounding this form of energy production. Some of the concerns about wind energy include visual impacts, birds and other living resources, lightning and noise (Wind Energy Development).
Due to the development of technology around the world, the need of energy is increasing every year. But, what would be the best way to produce energy without polluting the air, or depleting fossil fuels? Renewable energy would also be the best solution for this problem. Of the available sources of renewable energy, wind power shows much promise. Wind turbines have been used through many generations, and the technology continues to develop. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
