Willy Mene is a very energetic and passionate young man. His dream is to one day be preforming on Broadway. Currently he is hitting the peak of his life, he is 24 and loving very second of it. Willy is also a very outgoing person too, he seems like he is willing to try anything without the slightest bit of fear. He was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Santiago to be exact. Everyone has big tolls in there life and Willy experienced his when he was 5 years old. His parents got divorced. This is something no kid wants to go through especially at a very young age, having to chose what parent he basically wants to live with and be with more is a very hard decision especially since he was very naïve at the age of 5. Willy grew up living
America is a country built on the idea of The American dream; an idea that any person, white, black, brown, or even purple can achieve economic freedom and upward social mobility through hard work and determination. There are few men who hold this idea more dear than Willy Loman. Mistakenly, Willy focuses more on the ideals of wealth than the laborious journey it takes to become a successful business man. The American capitalistic society is competitive and people like Willy, who do not understand the environment they are in, will habitually have problems climbing the economic totem pole. Death of Salesman admits to a flaw in the American system, not everybody will be successful, but through characters, flashbacks, and the resolution it is clear that Willy’s lack of success is result of his own choices, and not society.

As time grows, a spouse becomes a soul mate, best friend, and lover all in one. No one will ever show their dedication and love for you like your significant other and that’s what Arthur Miller addresses in the play Death of a Salesman. Linda Loman is the wife of Willy Loman, a man that treats her wrong but she still stands by his side. Linda is a vital character because she never has a low personality, she chooses her husband over her children she’s strong when her husband passes away and she the voice of the playwright.
The book is titled the death of the salesmen written in 1949 by Arthur Miller explores the impact which social forces exert on the individual into what society shapes individual identity, also about the dangers of idealism. This book introduced us to the Lomans family(Willy Loman, Linda Loman- Willy’s wife ,and two sons-(Biff and Happy)) who live in America where the cost of living is too much high.Willy head of the family who works as a salesmen was the victim of capitalist ,he was obsessed in his two boys Biff and Happy in their futures success ,Biff was living on the present now no longer at school where he used to be an expert in soccer he is older enough to become much more successful on his own ,but he is a drifter who has fallen into life of crime and his brother Happy is womanizer who is unable to establish a stable life for himself.Willy was an old man who thought he might still do his job but fortunate his sales was decreasing even his boss saw that ,Willy knew that in life you have to be successful especially when you live in America it was a place of wealthy people. Good business and successes like his brother Ben.It is when Willy started to lean on Biff’s past where he was still at school playing football and bringing home some prizes that he had won at school .that was the past but Willy kept on reminding Biff of what he would have become the most popular son.
In the film Death of a Salesman the main character WIlly goes through a rough journey trying to fight through his delusions. "He has reared his children- his own seed- in the contaminated soil of delusion." Throughout this film WIlly has a weak relationship with his two sons Biff and Happy. Willy's delusions get worse throughout the film which results in an unhealthy relationship with his sons. Willy's relationship with his two sons is very different from the very beginning of Biff and Happy's childhood which really affect the entire future of the two boys. The goal of Will’s life is to be well liked and successful. Willy is too caught up in these two goals to focus on the value he’s representing in front of his children.
No one’s life can be classified as “normal”. Everyone has conflicts that they have to eventually deal with. People do in fact deal with these personal conflicts in different ways; some take it easy some take it hard. Some ignore the problem as long as possible and some deal with it right away to get it out of the way. In Death of a Salesman, Willy Lowman’s technique to his problem solving leads to severe consequences. Willy never does anything to help the situation; he just escapes into the past to happier times when there were few problems. He uses this escape as if it was a drug, and as the play goes on, this drug becomes dangerous, leading him to his death.
Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller was first presented in 1949 and has been studied and reproduced countless times since. The plot revolves around a salesman named Willy Loman and his family. Willy is 63 years old, and on the decline. His career as a traveling salesman is going badly, and during the play he is let go. Willy’s flashbacks to a better past take up much of the past, and are brought on by the return of Biff, Willy’s favorite son, who comes to visit from out west. Biff is 34 and Willy’s favorite son, but Willy’s high expectations him cause many issues for both of them. The overall tone of the play is sobering as we watch the family (especially Willy) fall apart because of various reasons, including the way they treat each other.
By the time Willy got to be an old man, his life was in shambles. *One son, Biff, was a hopeless dreamer who wasn’t able to hold on to a job. He could have been successful through an athletic scholarship, but he blew the chance he had to go to school. Happy, the other son, had a job, but was basically all talk, just like Willy. Now near the end of his career as a salesman, Willy realizes his whole life was just a joke, and the hopes he placed in the American Dream were misguided. At the end of the play, his only hope is to leave something for his family, especially for Biff, by taking his own life and leaving his family the insurance money. Through his death, Willy thinks he can achieve success and fulfill his dream.
The playwright Arthur Miller once insisted that any great play must deal with the question, "How may a man make of the outside world, a home." It was his belief that the most tragic issue which one could document was the embittered battle between society and the individuals which it was supposed to protect and nourish. Contrasting forms of this topic are well evidenced through his works, especially the plays All My Sons and Death of a Salesman. Both of these plays archive a day or so in the lives of the Keller and Loman families’ respectively. While the climax of both these plays lies in the present, invariably most of the major action takes place in the past. Events are revealed throughout the course of the play that further complicate a seemingly straightforward issue. However, Miller attempts to answer his essential question of, "How does a man adapt to the society in which he lives" in two very different ways, both of which represented in each play by the fathers of both families. In All my Sons we are introduced to the seemingly kind-hearted Joe Keller, a man who has refused society’s dominion over him, and has attempted to put his own family’s well being above all else. In contrast, Death of a Salesman portryas Willy Loman as quite the opposite; Willy has completely succumbed to society’s will, and is trying to forge a life for him and his family in the way he believes society preaches success. Disturbingly enough, even though both men are sundry to the core and would never be friends had they met, their divergent strategies towards living within society deals them parallel fates.
"After all the highways, and the trains, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive," (Miller, 98). This quote was spoken by the main character of the Arthur Miller play Death of a Salesman: Willy Loman. This tragedy takes place in Connecticut during the late 1940s. It is the story of a salesman, Willy Loman, and his family’s struggles with the American Dream, betrayal, and abandonment. Willy Loman is a failing salesman recently demoted to commission and unable to pay his bills. He is married to a woman by the name of Linda and has two sons, Biff and Happy. Throughout this play Willy is plagued incessantly with his and his son’s inability to succeed in life. Willy believes that any “well-liked” and “personally attractive man” should be able to rise to the top of the business world. However, despite his strong attempts at raising perfect sons and being the perfect salesman, his attempts were futile. Willy’s only consistent supporter has been his wife Linda. Although Willy continually treats her unfairly and does not pay attention to her, she displays an unceasing almost obsessive loyalty towards her husband: Even when that loyalty was not returned. This family’s discord is centered on the broken relationship between Biff and Willy. This rift began after Biff failed math class senior year and found his father cheating on Linda. This confrontation marks the start of Biff’s “failures” in Willy’s eyes and Biff’s estrangement of Willy’s lofty goals for him. This estrangement is just one of many abandonments Willy suffered throughout his tragic life. These abandonments only made Willy cling faster to his desire to mold his family into the American Dream. They began with the departure of his father leaving him and...
In the play Death of a Salesman, appearance vs. reality is one of the major themes
This article is about children’s perspective and how to get valid meaningful information from the child’s perspective about their learning experiences. This paper focuses on a sociocultural perspective of children as learners in their own right and co-constructers of their own meaning of learning (Smith, Duncan, & Marshall, 2005). This article also looks at how children can contribute to and make meaning of their learning and how they express that. Children use meaning-making to make sense of their world through and by the experience of narratives (Wright, 2012, p. 26). By using a sociocultural view of children, they are seen in a positive light that sees them as competent confident learners who can contribute and have a voice. This is also
Throughout history many families can’t face reality. In the play Death of a Salesman the main characters Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy use self-deception as a means to mentally escape the reality of their lives. Biff is the only character who becomes self-aware by the end of the play. Willy wants to live in his dream world; Linda and Happy don’t even realize that they’re in a dream world. Biff had no idea he was in a dream world until he had an epiphany.
“The present and the past coexist, but the past shouldn't be in flashback” -Alain Resnais. The play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller follows the life of a man named Willy Loman, and his family life with his two sons; Biff and Happy Loman, and wife, Linda Loman. Throughout the play, Willy has delusional episodes of past events in life, which he believes he is reliving, and these flashbacks are providing him an escape from dealing with the obstacles he is facing in life. The reader discovers that Willy is having an affair with a mistress titled The Woman, and he retreats to memories of their time together for an ego boost, though in reality he is arguing with his sons. Willy has an encounter with his brother Ben at the same time that he is playing cards with his neighbour Charlie, and because Willy’s mind is so far gone into the memory, Charlie leaves. During this flashback Willy sees his life compared to his successful brother, but he will not accept his lack of skill at being a salesman. His final flashback is a fake encounter he believes he has with his brother, and this progresses to Willy’s final act of suicide. Willy’s flashbacks are evidence that he is delusional because he cannot differentiate between a past event and reality.
Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman was written in 1949 just after WWII ended. The country was on the brink of the emergence of the financial success of capitalism. Willy Loman, the main character believes if he worked the concept of the American Dream, that he would reap the benefits of its success. However the fulfillment never happens to him the way he envisions it would. The story begins at the end of Willy’s sales career. He is a salesman who is no longer making any sales, and is wearing desperation like a badge causing others to slight and disrespect him. This is in sharp contrast to the prosperity indicated in the America media at the time. It is post WWII and America has to uphold her status as a world power in a cold war conflict with Russia. Therefore, the demand for weapons and better technology developed during this time helps to sustain the growth of the economy. In addition, families are growing and the baby boomer era is ushered in creating an increased demand for products and housing. Although some families were prospering in their corporate jobs, not all Americans were as fortunate. The Loman family feel in this category.
