The play "Death of a salesman" starts off with Willy Loman, sixty-year old salesman returning home confused. He can't remember most of the details from his trip even though he only made it to Yonkers. His wife Linda worries, telling him he needs to rest his mind and consider working in New York. Things would be different if Frank Wagner were alive but his son, Howard, does not appreciate him as much. Willy and Linda talk about Biff and argue whether he's lazy or not. Willy believes he will get started somewhere in life. Biff Loman, thirty-four, has had twenty or thirty different jobs since he left home before the war, but was fired from each. Willy gives Biff advice about promises to girls and tells him someday he will own his own business. Willy states you can get the best grades in school but in a business world personality matters and that's what will help his sons succeed. Willy worries about his business but is shortly reassured. Willy and Linda get into a disagreement over Biff for Willy feels there is nothing wrong with him and scolds Linda by stating she only wants Biff to be a worm like Bernard. Willy has hallucinations of his brother who past unnerving those around. The play jumps to the past when Willy introduces his sons to Ben. Back in the present Biff has concerns about Willy and Linda informs him that he's attempted suicide by trying to drive his car off a bridge and hooking a tube to a gas heater in the basement. Willy decides to talk to Howard Wagner about working in New York but instead gets frightened by a wire recorder and fired. Willy wonders what happened to Biff at a visit to New England and why he burnt his UVA shoes shortly after. Charley is the only friend Willy has. Biff and Happy abandon Willy at the restaurant.
