Death of Salesman” is about a man named Willie Lowman whose family is middle class, but he is struggling to pay bills and take care of his family. The play was composed and produced in 1949 by Arthur Miller. The play was written about a time in business when you are only important if you are making money. Willie is not making the money he is used to. He is slowly breaking down, and he talks to himself while he struggles to move on with the times. Some of his flaws are not helping. He is a misogynist, adulterer and a bully, but he can also be seen as a loving father and good husband in his own way. Despite his flaws, Willie is a sympathetic character and tragic hero. He has many characteristics of being a hero, but in the same light his flaws make him tragic.

In “Death of a Salesman,” the social issue we find is the reality of the American dream. The dream is that in America, anyone can be rich and successful. Miller had a great distaste for this false hope, so he showed the reality through Willie Lowman’s point of view. Willy believed to be successful, you only have to be rich, and it didn’t matter how you got there. You could cheat, and hurt people and it didn’t matter as long as you had money. Because he believed in the American dream so much, he hurt his family trying to make the dream happen. He cheated on his wife just to make sale to a client. He saw himself in his son Biff, and bullied him because of it. He wasn’t very happy, but he didn’t do anything to fix that. He started losing his mind because of the stress from not being successful by his definition. In the end, when he saw he was a failure, he thought the only way to help his family was to kill himself so they could get the insurance
