The Use of Force Criticism William Carlos Williams wrote the short story “The Use of Force”. He wrote this story in the middle of the Great Depression, which attributed to the family’s social status. Williams uses multiple elements that contribute to the story. In “The Use of Force” by William Carlos Williams, he uses writing style to convey the story’s themes. There are multiple themes used in the story like how violence will only breed more violence and force can sometimes be used for good. The doctor wants to be able to help Mathilda but to do so he needs to use force: If he [the doctor] were to allow his fondness for the girl to stop him, the result might be much, much worse for her [Mathilda] than the short-term discomfort she would undergo …show more content…
Williams decided to leave out quotation marks to confuse the reader but still prefaces spoken lines with the word said (“Use” 6). Williams makes the reader wonder whether or not these were the words they spoke, making the reader unclear which fits the story’s tone (“Use” 7). Williams uses a tone that attempts to use very little emotion to help the relationships seem clearer (“Use” 7). Williams also doesn’t use any quotation marks to show urgency it the story (Wilson 606). Williams uses commas instead of periods multiple times in the story to keep it flowing (Wilson 606). The story seems urgent because the author doesn’t explain everything (Wilson 606). The first couple sentences are rushing and make the reader think it’s a rescued-from-death tale, but it’s mostly about the doctor trying to see the girl’s throat (Wilson 606). The “Use of Force” uses some symbolism in its writing style to further express its overall tone. The wooden tongue depressor is a symbol for Mathilda’s rage and how she breaks it showing her ferocity (“Use” 7). When the doctor switches tools to a spoon, it symbolizes the change from empathy to force (“Use” 7). In “The Use of Force” by William Carlos Williams, he uses writing style to convey the story’s themes. The writing style in the story helped the story’s tone and adds to the themes while the themes are shown in the doctor’s and Mathilda’s relationship. The “Use

The Reconstruction was the process of trying to rebuild the South after the devastating effect of the Civil War. Some interesting facts during the Civil War were first, in 1869 the first college football game took place, second, African American universities became a reality, and last, in 1870, Hiram Revels was elected the first black Senator. In the end, Reconstruction died, but we’ve all been asking the same thing; North or South: Who killed the Reconstruction? Answering this question, I believe the North killed the Reconstruction by a lack of focus on it, the racism on African Americans, and being sick of assisting the South.
Ted Williams quest to hit .400 did not become a cliffhanger until the last day of the regular season. On the last day of the year, the Red Sox had a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics. Williams batting average was at .39955 which would of rounded up to .400. The Red Sox's player-manager, Joe Cronin, offered to sit Ted for the games so he would finish the year with a .400 average. Ted declined the offer and said “I’m going to play. If I’m going to be a .400 hitter, I’m not going to slip in through the back door, and I’m not going to do it sitting on the bench.” In the first game Ted went four for five and was easily over .400, but he still refused to sit the second game. In the second game, Ted went two for three to finish the day six for eight. Ted finished with a .406 batting average.

In contrast, syntax provides a new perspective to the narrator s behavior as sentence structure draws attention to her erratic behavior. By her last entry, the narrator s sentences have become short and simple. Paragraphs 227 through 238 contain few adjectives resulting in limited descriptions yet her short sentences emphasize her actions providing plenty of imagery. The syntax quickly pulls the reader through the end as the narrator reaches an end to her madness.
Personal choices are very important in one’s life. The stories that will be compared are, “The Use of Force”, by William Carlos Williams and “Lather and Nothing Else”, by Hernando Tellez. It is how the protagonists deal with a situation and how they use their intellectual thinking to deal with the situation. However, personal choices can change the outcome of a conflict, which will either be insightful or pessimistic. People make their own personal choices in everyday life. If the personal choices are not well-made, the conflict can either have a positive conclusion or negative conclusion.

The fragment we were given is a three paragraph narration that has longer sentences at the beginning and little by little begins shortening them until by the final paragraph they are very short. The long sentences being used to slow down the time that will be very important in the passage and hence to build up the suspense and tension in the ambience until the sentences become short and speed up the time in the story, building the tension more and more to a point where it seems like something is coming or something will occur. The story is also told by a protagonist narrator which we know thanks to the use of the first person and the direct access to the character’s mind along with his feelings and thoughts. This narrator is retelling us the story (“I have naturally no wish to enlarge on this phase of my story. (…) I would have passed it over if I didn’t think that some account of it was necessary for a full understanding of what follows”[line 19-20]) of his trip over to Ransom’s house, a path which will trigger his paranoia and fear. The style of the writing is very direct as the narrator is practically in a one-sided dialogue with his readers.
...ave begged for her son and grandchildren life instead of trying save her life. The type of literary element shown here is conflict. The type of conflict that is shown is man versus man because the grandmother is constantly trying to convince someone in doing something else. It also shows conflict because the grandmother was begging for her life, but at the end that did not work because she ended up getting killed either way.
As the time passed, it was clear to both of them that their relationship will not turn into a sexual one, but into something much more profound. He did not want it to be compromised by carnality. The urgent appetite they felt for each other could not be satisfied by mere adhesion to lust. They had to deal with their souls, hearts and minds, as well as their bodies.
“The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence,” Robert Peel. The use of force for police officers is something I find to be justified and right, because it can possible help save the officers life and any witnesses lives.
Tennessee Williams is widely known as one of the greatest playwrights in American history. Tennessee Williams's personal life and experiences have been the direct subject matter for his dramas. ...der what motive? He had to justify his motives, perhaps to add some morality to ensure what he was doing was ethical. He would flip that thought, perhaps to try and downplay his desire to unleash his violent frustration onto the girl. He ultimately saved Mathilda’s life in a sense, but under which motive? I believe the this is the question William Carlos Williams’ The Use of Force has the reader ask themselves. Under a emergency situation the human condition can be torn between a code of ethics or a dominance of dark desire. No doubt in The Use of Force, the end of the situation turned out well as the girl could be saved, but the method to find out was ambiguous. How well would the case between doing the right thing and doing what you desire turn out in any other situation? I believe this is the question that William Carlos Williams wanted the reader to think about.
o The main conflict is between Mathilda and the doctor. The doctor needs to check Mathilda’s throat to see if she has Diphtheria, but the girl will not open her mouth.
