my lack of understanding has now been proven wrong because he is so much more than that. I now think of Smith as a generous, good hearted person because of all that he does. One of the things that Todd highlights that shows how generous Smith can be is how he has started the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation which helps inner city community development and Smith also donated a lot of money to the Overbrook High School, from which he graduated. Another big event that Todd started the book with was how Will Smith, along with other celebrities, helped to organize America: A Tribute to Heroes charity telethon to benefit victims of the September eleventh attacks in 2001. Anne M. Todd wrote this book as not only a biography, but as a tribute to all that Will Smith has done for the country and the world. Question A - Life details Will Smith, born in 1968, grew up in West Philadelphia and attended the Overbrook High School. During his time in high school he did some minor rapping under his rap name Fresh Prince, he worked with a DJ named Jeff Townes, or DJ Jazzy Jeff. They performed some songs through high school that never really took off, however after signing a recording contract with Jive Records the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff released Rock the House. This album was very successful and even made Smith a short lived millionaire and it was this taste of success that caused Smith to make the difficult decision to go against his parents will and pursue music instead of college. In 1988 the duo released He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper which went double platinum and earned them their first Grammy in 1989. Even though the two had huge successes together Smith started to split his time between rapping and starring in the soon to be hit television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that ran from 1990 to 1996. It was in 1992 that Smith broke from music to begin starring in small movies, however it was in 1995 that he landed a big role in the successful movie Bad Boys. After Smith proving himself as a legitimate actor in the movie Bad Boys it allowed for more big opportunities in big movies like; Independence Day, Men in Black (I, II, and III), Enemy of the State, Wild Wild West, Ali, Bad Boys II, Hitch, The Pursuit of Happiness, and I Am Legend. While filming all of these movies he branched out into real estate development with his company Treyball Development, he also got into producing television shows and movies under Smith’s other company, Overbrook Entertainment. With all of Will Smith’s achievements and major successes up to 2007 his net worth was over $200 million dollars and it even larger today. Question B - Major Events The one major event that could have shaped who Will Smith is today was the separation of his parents.
His parents separated when he was thirteen years old due to the constant struggle and stresses over paying the bills as well as what the future would hold for the family. Their relationship deteriorated from the daily issues that came with raising four children on a tight budget. Will Smith and his siblings moved with their mother to their grandmother’s house a couple blocks away. This is where the life changing events occurred, with his grandmother, in West Philadelphia because of how much of an influence Smith’s grandmother had on him in his early life. Smith would always be trying his best to make his grandmother proud whether it was in church while he was playing the piano during the church service or in his songs with his friends at parties. One night Smith left his song notebook out and his grandmother read one of the songs, when she saw the profanity in the song she simply said to Smith, “At least you are happy with yourself.” From that point on all of Smith’s songs were clean and lacking all types profanity and this was just to please his grandmother. Smith’s grandmother also gave him a very helpful piece of advice when he was very young, “Don’t let failure go to your heart and don’t let success go to your head.” During his rise to stardom Smith took this advice to heart, continued working hard no matter the situation, so without the separation of his parents and …show more content…
moving in with his grandmother who knows where he would be now. Question E - Personality Traits What has gotten Will Smith this far in his successful career is his many great personality traits.
The first trait that Smith has, is the ability to never doubt himself or to ever give up and when getting started in his career this was very helpful. Even when the important figures in his life like his mother and father did not want him to pursue music because they did not think it would be a successful life path he still pushed on and made himself successful. Or when his attempts to get into the big movies were slow going, he kept at it and eventually got the part in his first big movie, Bad Boys. Smith also possess the ability to charm someone to get what he wants or to get out of trouble. Throughout high school Smith was known by his teachers as “Prince” for his ability to get on to someone’s good side and to be able to talk his way out of trouble. Smith was also able to use his charming abilities to gain the attention and support of his manager, James Lassiter, who was very impressed with Smith’s personality after their first meeting in Smith’s senior year of high school. The final piece to his great personality is his overall ability to be funny and entertaining. Growing up in West Philadelphia, the community that Smith lived in always appreciated his wisecracks and jokes to cheer them up even in the toughest of times. To be successful in the movies and on television Smith relied on his upbeat and funny personality to entertain his viewers and him being so entertaining
is what made him as successful as he is today.

The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.

To determine what factors Brown had to overcome to become a success, we must look at what was against him. He was a black man in a white dominant society. The only factor that could have made Brown being black any worse was if he grew up in the South. He shows us this through his parents they moved from the South to Harlem to escape its prejudices. Like many black families Brown’s parents wanted to be the first Northern urban generation of Negro’s. He showed the kind of Southern black mentality his parents had with the jobs they took and the way they reacted to his quitting of what they called good paying jobs....
