Life presents a wide array of obstacles as well as opportunities, and it is important to be prepared to take on whatever it is that life has to offer. In his Harvard Commencement Address, Will Ferrell reinforces this idea into the 2003 graduating class of the prestigious Harvard University as they prepare to move on to do greater things. His comedic approach is successful due to his ability to evoke feelings of laughter from his audience while also making them realize that they are entering a new stage of life. His use of a polysyndeton dramatizes how serious he is about setting up the graduating class to be ready to face the world. His repetition of conjunctions slows down the pace of his speech while also creating a rhythm that further enhances his message by making his audience grow a deeper interest for what he will address. In addition, the polysyndeton helps in cultivating the trust between Ferrell and those who he is speaking to because the rhythm plays a substantial role in keeping the attention of the audience. Another method of appealing to the audience is through his use of an anaphora. Through his anaphora that describes how life can be tough, Ferrell instills his sentences into the memories of his listeners since repetition makes phrases easier to remember. Moreover, in his use of an anaphora, he was able to evoke laughter from the audience because of the relative realism of his choice of situations that he chooses to present. Another way in which he evokes laughter is by using a hyperbole. The exaggeration adds to the humorous mood and adds a uniqueness to his speech that distinguishes it from other commencement speeches, which often have a much more serious tone. Not only is Ferrell able to hold the attention of the audience for the entirety of his commencement address, but he is also able to successfully convey his message. David Hicks was a 34 year old black male. He was on death row in Texas from December of 1987 to April of 1988, sentenced to die by lethal injection for rape and murder, on April 25th 1988, of his 87-year-old grandmother, Ms. Ocolor Heggar. The unification of these prospective seniors further augments the message of settling. McCullogh further critiques the phrases that defy logic. High school students have perceived that “good is no longer good enough, where a B is the new C”. The goal into doing one’s best has been shaped into doing the capabilities of another, in which McCullogh responds metaphorically to only focus on the betterment of the self: “climb [the mountain] so you can see the world, not so the world can see you”. All of these seniors have fallen into the preconceived mindset of superiority, unifying them together but it is their personal capabilities that distinguishes one from another, successes from failures. Poehler utilizes various rhetorical strategies throughout her address such as allusion, and conveying pathos in a humourous as well as an emotional way. However, Will went on to overcome his negative self-image in the world of comedy by surprisingly becoming a hit on SNL, making box-office topping movies, and using “funnies” to tune the youth into political issues.
David McCullough Jr., delivered the commencement at Wellesley High School in Massachusetts on June 1st 2012 to staff, the 2012 graduates, and their family and friends. The speech was straightforward and supplied valuable information for their future. . McCullough’s speech at times felt harsh, offensive, and insulting. His words and examples were given to achieve insight, knowledge, and awareness for each student’s future. The commencement expressed a great deal of achievement, but conveyed that there was more work to be done. His speech was effective and appreciated through humor parallelism, repetition, and anaphora. His point of view has obtained respect and determination by all those that have been challenged and have heard his words.

In the novel Native Son by Richard Wright, the final plea of Mr. Max regarding the trial of Bigger Thomas is very important as it encompasses the main theme of oppression and its importance to the United States on a monumental scale. Mr. Max analyzes the life of Bigger Thomas in the way the author intends it to be seen, as a symbol of the lives of the 12 million African Americans living in the United States at that time. The passionate speech by Mr. Max covers the theme of blindness, and how the white populace uses it to shield themselves from guilt. Also, he uses an extended metaphor to depict how the ghettos merely fuelled the oppression and crime of the city. Similarly to the containment of the blacks in ghettos he mentions the lack of expression and freedom, which connects to important symbols mentioned earlier in the novel. The passionate and urgent tone to the speech also shows promise for the future as Max makes his heartfelt speech in hopes of change for an oppressed people.
Steve Almond’s “Funny is the New Deep” talks of the role that comedy has in our current society, and most certainly, it plays a huge role here. Namely, through what Almond [Aristotle?] calls the “comic impulse”, we as a people can speak of topics that would otherwise make many of uncomfortable. Almond deems the comic impulse as the most surefire way to keep heavy situations from becoming too foreboding. The comic impulse itself stems from our ability and unconscious need to defend and thus contend with the feeling of tragedy. The authors then tell the audience how popular comedians, like Chris Rock, have stopped performing on college campuses, because the students cannot take a joke.
Like any high school jock, Ferrell loved attention. He wanted to try and be as popular as he could, and he quickly achieved that goal by not only becoming a star athlete but also a class clown. When questioned in an interview about whether or not he was always funny, Ferrell gave the perfect comical reply saying, “No not always... only about 74% of the time.” It was clear that he had a natural talent to make people laugh, but he didn't really pursue it until much later. He knew that he could make people laugh, and he loved the popularity that it gained him. His principle even started having him read the daily announcements because if it was Will behind the microphone reciting them with a comical twist, then people would actually pay attention.

I consider Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 to be one of the most effective speeches. He uses mechanics of speech to craft a well-rounded speech that is crowned by his use of rhetorical devices. Jobs gives relevant and fundamental knowledge of his life and experiences with his rhetorical approach. In his speech to the Stanford’s graduation class, he tells different stories of love, loss, discovery and difficulty he faced in his life to encourage new graduates as they continue to mature in life. He encourages students to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by failures they might experience in life.
