A life or death survival situation is not a scenario that crosses people’s mind very often, but acquiring some basic survival skills could save lives. Survival skills include a range of situations from lost while hiking, to a plane crash, and even to the dreaded zombie apocalypse. Ever since people have been going into the woods there have been people getting lost, and ever since people have been getting lost there has been a need for survival skills. The art of survival has been studied, tested, and even put on television in shows like “Survivorman”, “Man Vs Wild”, and “Dual Survival”. The skillfulness crucial for wilderness survival is easily learned, and gives everyone a fighting chance if a life or death survival circumstance occurs. Basic wilderness survival skills separate into three groups: water, fire, and finally, escape.
Water is a deciding factor between life and death throughout a survival situation. One of the biggest killers in the wild is lack of water, or dehydration. Dehydration is detected by thirst, little to no sweat, no urination, and exhaustion. Devoid of water, a person dies from dehydration in within three to five days, but in an unforgiving survival situation the time before death is reduced due burdens on the body. Water is challenging to acquire; however, it is straightforward to do with basic knowledge of how water flows, geological features, and how some plants retain water (Muma 3). All plants require water, and the majority store water inside themselves; this element alone could give people a sufficient amount of water to survive. If chewed on, almost any green plant or leaf will produce water (Muma 9). Erik Falk said, “Water is very rarely drinkable in the wild, so some kind of purification is neces...

...aybe not even once in a lifetime, but when it is extraordinarily easy to learn simple skills to save themselves people should learn them. If given the chance to learn a skill to potentially save a life the intelligent thing to do would be to learn it. The opportunity to prepare to escape death is more than adequate motivation to gain knowledge of some fundamental and exceptionally useful skills.

Living in the wilderness is difficult, but understanding the meaning of such lifestyle is even more difficult. One of the Christopher’s admirable qualities was that he was well aware of what he was doing. He knew about the difficulties and dangers that he would face into the wilderness, and was mentally prepared for that. Author Jon Krakauer says that “McCandless was green, and he overestimated his resilience, but he was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice. And he was fully aware when he entered the bush that he had given himself a perilously slim margin for error. He knew precisely what was at stake” (182). McCandless was an educated youth, who loved nature and dreamed of living in the Alaskan wilderness. Although he ignored to take many necessary things with him on this

Chris McCandless’s story, in Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is an important story to be heard, but it should be read as a cautionary tale for all people wanting to go into the wilderness unprepared. Anyone going into an inhospitable region should be aware of this story and should not make the mistake of being
When it was time to go, he took only a penknife, a ball of cord, some flint and steel, forty dollars, and an ax. The flint and steel were for starting fires. He hitched a ride from a trucker to the town; Delhi, nearest the old family farm. He set out in May, set up a camp in a terrible storm, couldn’t get his fire going was tired, and hungry and realized in order to survive he would have to keep his wits about him.
In the World, the liquid medium that we know as water is the main component that keeps humans, animals and their respective ecosystems alive. Everything from trees down to the smallest leaf requires it, and it is required for any lifeform to continue to grow. Though as humanity expands and continues on an upward slope, humans as a lifeforce continue to need more. Water is a defining aspect of a community, and with the ever-rising population and human-crafted climate change coming to an all-time high, one of the most important water origins of the southeast region is coming to a very dangerous low.
Many people have misconceptions about hunting. One such misconception is that hunting is easy and any person can go sit in the woods and wait for an animal to cross the hunter’s path. However, people who believe this are sorely mistaken. Hunting is not just sitting in the woods with a rifle; there are many other aspects that must be considered. An individual must have all preparations complete, purchase or gather the equipment needed, and know what to listen for while in the woods.

The Alaskan wilderness is one of the most controversial topics discussed in the United States today. There are many different opinions and regulations pertaining to certain topics affecting the natural landscape of Alaska. One such topic is hunting for brown bear. While these massive animals face no current danger of being wiped out as a result of hunting, it is still a controversial and constantly debated issue. Over ninety-five percent of the United States’ brown bear resides in Alaska. Brown bears are one of the more appealing attractions for visitors to Alaska. According to the Alaskan Outdoor Journal, there are places all throughout Alaska that are designated brown bear viewing areas (Alaska Outdoor Journal, 2010). However many who come to Alaska for the brown bear don’t simply come to observe. Instead, they come for the hunt. These animals are constantly hunted for sport, and since they reproduce at a very low rate, this has the potential to jeopardize the total population of the brown bear. Overall, I believe that brown bear hunting should remain legal.
It was a beautiful October afternoon as I climbed to the top of my tree stand. The sun was shining, and a slight breeze was blowing from the northwest. I knew that the deer frequented the area around my stand since my step-dad had shot a nice doe two days earlier from the same stand, and signs of deer were everywhere in the area. I had been sitting for close to two hours when I decided to stand up and stretch my legs as well as smoke a cigarette.

Water is the most important substance in our evolution and our daily lives. Without water,
Water is an essential nutrient that our body requires every day. Without water human life cannot be sustained. Water deprivation kills faster than lack of any other nutrient. People do not think of water as a nutrient and don’t realize the important role of water in the body functions.
Water is the most vital part of life. Water is needed from humans, to plants and other organisms, and to do basically everything. Water allows our bodily functions to work and to remove waste from our bodies. Plants need water to grow, and humans need plants to gr...
