In 1903, I can only imagine that the single thought inside of both Wilbur and Orville Wright’s minds was to get their airplane off the ground. Because of their dream of heavier-than-air flight, mankind has gone from a flight of 120 feet, in an aircraft designed largely out of wood, using bicycle drive technology (World Digital Library, 2013), to a spacecraft that is about to leave our solar system (Voyager I). To quote American author, Napoleon Hill (1992), “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” When we stop to consider how far we have come in just over one hundred years, is it even possible to conceive what air travel might look like a hundred years from now?
From the Wright Flyer to the aircraft we fly today, they all started as a dream that later turned into a design. NASA is not sending astronauts into space at the moment, but that has not stopped the engineers at NASA from working on advanced aerodynamic designs and technologies that would help us achieve the dream of traveling farther, faster and higher. Improved materials such as carbon-fiber give an aircraft lighter weight, improved performance and lower fuel consumption. NASA’s newest design in carbon-fiber is called “PRSEUS” (Pultruded rod, Stitched, Efficient, Unitized Structure), a material that will be stronger than current carbon-fiber technology and will greatly reduce the need for rivets and other fasteners that lead to structural fatigue. NASA believes this new material will help Boeing achieve its goal of an aircraft of blended wing design (Sloan, 2011). Charles Lindbergh's extraordinary success catapulted the curiosity of millions of Americans about air travel. On the front page of The New York Times, Edwin L. James also wrote: “harbor craft, factories, fire sirens, and radio carry messages of the flier's victory throughout the city-Theaters halt while audiences cheer.” All Americans were awakened with the victorious news and with what it would mean to the world. After this significant day in history, thanks to Charles Lindbergh, nothing will ever be the same in the world of aviation. This man, an “American Idol” forever changed the way people viewed flight, impacted companies, the country, and even the world as a whole with his talent, intelligence, and bravery.
In the book The Invention Of Wings there were many themes written all over it. Though I found that the theme in this book is, everyone should be treated the same no matter the color of your skin. For example, in the book all of Mr. and Mrs. Grimke slaves were treated horrible. Unlike Sarah, at a very young age wasn’t blind on how badly the slaves were being treated. Sarah didn’t believe in any human being treated the way they were being treated. Action speaks louder then words and Sarah definitely proved that when she was given Handful, as her own personal handmaiden slave. Sahara treated Handful as if she was colorless almost like if color didn’t exist in her eyes. Even though Sarah had to be very cautious because she was still living under

These works lead them towards their work with airplanes. The Wright Brothers tried for many years to build a successful flying machine and succeeded. Travelling at a speed twice that of sound might seem to be futuristic; however, this feat was already achieved almost 40 years ago by the world’s only supersonic passenger aircraft, the Concorde. Concorde brought a revolution in the aviation industry by operating transatlantic flights in less than four hours. The slick and elegant aircraft with one of the most sophisticated engineering was one of the most coveted aircraft of its time. However, this was all destined to end when Air France Flight 4590 was involved in a tragic disaster just outside the city of Paris on July 25, 2000. The crash killed 113 people, but more disastrous was its impact.
Orville and Wilbur Wright are two brothers who had worked hard all their life by innovating new ideas and concepts trying to change the world. Orville and Wilbur lived in the same house, they worked together six days a week, ate their meals together, had similar physical features, and they even had both of their money in a joint bank account. Wilbur was forty-two years old, he was tall and not very neatly dressed most of the time, while his younger brother Orville was thirty-eight, very handsome and young looking, and always dressed in tip top shape. The single limiting factor in spaceflight has always been cost and with both SpaceX and Blue Origin pioneering reusable boosters for their rockets that cost drastically lowers. Every year, the brightest minds in aviation compile the greatest technological advances towards creating the safest and most economical aircraft on the planet. No detail is over looked, and the bottom dollar is the controlling factor. From private aircraft to public aircraft, space exploration and beyond, the future is bright for the passenger aircraft market, and everyone who purchases air travel should be excited to see how the industry unfolds.
