When answering the questions corresponding to the film, I find myself with mixed responses. Pertaining to the topic of why we went to war with Mexico, I feel that the answer differs whether you are looking at it from the Mexican perspective or from the stance of America. Ultimately, the reason that we went to war with Mexico is because of the American desire to expand the country to the west coast.

Under James Polk’s presidency, America wanted to continue the western expansion. They claimed that this was God’s plan and that the American’s were God’s new chosen people. The American government used this concept of “manifest destiny” to justify their intent. By saying that God intends for them to claim this land and continue the expansion they were able to gain the support of the American citizens. America would be gaining almost half of the territory of Mexico, for a price tag of thirty million dollars. Aside from monetary gain the agreement proposed by Polk offered no benefits for Mexico. …show more content…

The Mexican government perceived this offer as offensive. President Polk tried to bully Mexico into getting what he wanted. I believe that Mexico had every reason to fight back against the Americans. Had the Mexican government agreed to an armistice they would have been sending the message that what was happening was okay, so in a sense they had no choice. However, on the part of the American government I feel that initiating this war was unjustifiable. The actions of James Polk in this were war were deceptive, oppressive, and selfish. Expanding the country westward would be beneficial for him, no matter the effect on others or the means in which he had to get what he wanted. However, given the history of the elite since the colonization of America I don’t find these actions
