Dear Secretary of the University Senate I have received your email inviting me to share my view on the proposal. After much research and debate I have come to a conclusion. My stance on this proposal is that all electronic devices should be banned from the classroom except when such devices are needed to carry out an academic exercise related to the classroom. Students using extrinsic devices during class is disruptive to other students in the class. These such actions show disrespect to the instructor of the course. All this can lead to students to performing more poorly on quizzes and exams. If a student is in a lecture and he or she is on their electronic device they are more likely to not remember more than half of the material being taught in the lecture. This is because they are either attempting to multitask or just completely disregarding what's going on. Science shows that humans cannot multitask, but simply alternate …show more content…
If they can't remember the material because they were on their phone than they can't pass their exams. Only paying attention half of the time in class can result in this. Studies have shown that electronic devices being regulated and applied in the class room for related purposes is a positive, but when students start to get off track and wonder off into the phones that's when performance suffers. Having these devices in classroom will lead to students getting distracted. They can also be disruptive to the other students as well. A student id trying to pay attention in class and all of a sudden he or she cannot because they are being distracted by the person next to them. This can happen in mammy ways, like the table shacking because of the vibration of someone's phone, or the loud sounds that come from these electronics. These devices can become a cancer in the classroom if not regulated
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
Due to the nature of this study, two separate, different, experiments were done with two mutually exclusive groups of participants. These experiments were based off of two key hypotheses. The first being that these researchers wanted to replicate a previous study performed on this topic, but in a more controlled manner (Sana, et. al., 2013). The second hypothesis that these researchers desired to test was how the multitasking of a classmate would indirectly affect a student’s learning ability (Sana, et. al., 2013). In their studies the researchers used the manipulation of either using a laptop to strictly take notes or to use the laptop and complete tasks while taking notes as the independent variable. The dependent variable for this study was measuring the student’s comprehension of the lecture material presented.
When I first tried to think of a behavior that I wanted to get rid of, I honestly did not think I had any traits that were really that bad to get rid. But when I started paying more attention to myself, I noticed that I would always constantly tap my foot on the floor, and it did not limit to the floor. Even when I was laying down on my bed doing homework or something, my right leg would always be wiggling. This trait was something that I would always do and I would usually not even notice until my leg feels tired or someone next to tells me to stop because I was shaking the chair and it was really annoying to them. This is a trait that I would actually want to decrease because I myself find it really annoying because it always constantly do it all the time. I even remember when my parents would lecture me during church when I would automatically shake my leg and I would shake the entire chair which really annoyed them. But this trait was something I felt like I had no control over as it was something I subconsciously do all the time. This does not really hinder my everyday life, but my leg does get tired from doing that all the time, but also because I feel a little self-conscious when I shake my leg and annoy the people around me.
Instead of diving up time for each individual task, we try and complete multiple things at one time. While this may allow us to complete things quicker, we are more likely to make mistakes, mix up information, and do poorly. Shirky included data from a paper entitled Laptop Multitasking Hinders Classroom Learning for Both Users and Nearby Peers. This contributed to his final realization that screens truly do distract us. He quotes the paper sharing that, “participants who multitasked on a laptop during a lecture scored lower on a test compared to those who did not multitask, and participants who were in direct view of a multitasking peer scored lower on a test compared to those who were not. [M]ultitasking on a laptop poses a significant distraction to both users and fellow students and can be detrimental to comprehension of lecture content.” (Shirky 21). Through trying to multitask students compromise both their personal success as well as the success of their peers. Students are not entitled to solutions to every problem that may come about as a result of their choosing to use technology; if a student chooses to use technology than it is their responsibility to solve those problems for themselves.For example, just because a teacher allows computers in class, it does not mean that the teacher must also supply a way for the students to charge their computers if the situation may arise that one needs to charge her computer; this is the student’s responsibility and she must solve the problem on her own. Computers do offer easily accessible distractions during class if they are used for note taking, however if a student chooses to be distracted by their computer and use it for the purpose of entertainment instead of notes taking then it will show when it comes test time and they don’t have the notes to study. Multitasking with non-course material results in a student’s attention being diverted from the course material that is being taught. This can result in errors in memory for the student and also a more difficult time learning the information outside of the classroom (Kraushaar & Novak, 2010, p.1). The University of Vermont completed a study in order to determine the impacts of multitasking with a laptop during a university lecture. Through the experiment they were able to determine that “students with a high [and long] frequency of software multitasking during lectures will exhibit lower academic performance than students with a low [and short] frequency of software multitasking” (Kraushaar & Novak, 2010, p.6). This shows that repeated and lengthy multitasking with technology in particular laptops during lecture times can cause extremely negative results in a students academic performances and

Multitasking students can miss many necessary information that they really need to pass tests and understand lessons when they multitask during the lectures, which causes them to get a low grade on their tests. “Many experienced multitaskers have experienced an unexpected thing when, for example, their e-mail service was disabled for a period of time. Cell phones may be the top of devices those distract students in class. The ubiquitous problem originates from the cell phones. I’m also a high school student, I can see some of my classmates use it for texting every day in class instead of listening to the teacher. Students also use it for playing video games, listening to music, watching videos. And definitely, while you are playing with your phones, you will not be able to absorb the lesson that the teacher is trying to teach.
