Art: It’s more than just a pretty picture “What is art?” is a question that constantly lingers in the back of my mind. Jeremy Adam Smith, author of the article “Why We Make Art”, explains his definition as “anything anyone calls art is art. [...] Calling something ‘art’ is really just a subjective way of indicating value” (par. 4). Entering art foundations my freshmen year I had no prior knowledge of the talent I had for art. Now as I continue down the path of art, not only has my skill been presented to me, but so has its purpose and worth. I have found that art has much more dimension than what lies along the surface. The deeper into art I go, the more I struggle with defining it because as I try to simplify and categorize it into a specific …show more content…
Emotion and life are intertwined within the creations, unlocking another layer of humanity, bringing art its value and use. Despite the fact that art is a visual form meant to be looked at, there is much more usefulness to it than what meets the eye or that is taken into consideration. Art is used to make one’s thoughts, ideas, and feelings come to life through the form of expression which in turn can trigger reactions from the eye of the public. From an artist’s standpoint, when one is to express themselves with art, they completely immerse themselves within their work. Ray Mark Rinaldi, the author of an article in the Denver Post, says that Christo Javacheff, a well known environmental artist who is known by his first name only, insists that with the creation of his latest project, “[he] is now part of the art” (par. 22). As Christo pours his entire being into it, the product reflects the same energy, heart, and focus he put into the piece. When art is used to self express, fragments of the artist shines throughout their work as a result. Often the creator will purposely shape their piece to spark specific feelings within the viewer. Rinaldi says that Christo explains how “every plane ride, every meeting with the engineers, every
This book was also one of my first encounters with an important truth of art: that your work is powerful not because you convey a new emotion to the audience, but because you tap into an emotion the audience already feels but can't express.
If I were to ask you what is art, and how can one find it? What would you say? Well if it were me being asked those question, I would simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design and it could be found all among us. You may define it differently only because art could be defined in many ways. I could simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design. Well according to an article written by Shelley Esaak, an art history expert she mentioned that art has a way of stimulating different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. She also mentioned that art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. [1]
According to Webster’s Dictionary, art is “human expression of objects by painting, etc” (10). The words “human experience” adds meaning to art. Artists reveal their inner thoughts and feelings through their work. When we study a painting by Salvador Dali, the strange objects and the surrealist background portrays the eccentricity of the painter. Some ideas cannot be explained verbally. They can only be shown via a medium. We can get across what is in our minds or our hearts by a stroke of a brush, a drop of paint, a row of words, or something else. But to express ourselves, we do not need to limit what we call art.
When trying to define art, humankind runs in to many difficulties. Traditional concepts of art include painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography. Art can also be one simple thought. The abstract idea of creativity is art. Imagination is art. Words are art. Simplistically, art is anything an individual creates. A painter with a lifetime of formal education in oils, acrylics, and watercolors, is just as much an artists as a three-year-old with a pot of red finger paint. By creating, one creates art.
My body stood stagnant while my eyes stared at the LOVE mural in Highland Town. My facial expressions showed concentration yet my mind was a revolving door of words formulating into questions and incomplete thoughts. This simple four letter word made me feel so many emotions that never wanted to stay suppressed. “Hey kid, you know I created this to make people happy right?” I looked over at the well-known street artists and gave him a slight chuckle “Yeah…funny isn’t?” Michael gave me a quizzical look “That something created out of genuine joy, makes someone want to cry.” “It evokes emotion…you’re feeling what this city is crying for — love.” I nodded my head and continued to allow the revolving door to spin thoughts in and out of my mind. I diverted my view from the mural I saw on basically every hipster's laptop and back at the man who created this art. Michael nodded at me as if silently saying, “Go ahead and say it.” “How do you validate your art as true art?” I cringed at the way I had worded the question. Michael gave me a small smirk “You feel something in your chest right?” I nodded “Then its art kid.”
The title of the painting I chose to analyze is The City from Greenwich Village by John Sloan. This painting originated from the United States of America in 1922. Currently, the painting is at an exhibit in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The type of media is oil on canvas. The City from Greenwich Village effectively displayed the city of New York in the early 1920s in a way that captivates its audience.
Art by definition is “the expression or application of creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power,” (Hacker, 2011).
Now this leads us to understand what exactly, is art. studies all the typical “arts”. This includes music, literature, theatre, dance, film, as well as painting, sculpture, and architecture. This directs the student towards a very broad field. For example, architecture may involve the Sistine Chapel, considered one of the world’s most loved works of art. However, it may also include the landscaping in a small town square. So then, art is defined as something that deals with both the “useful” and “fine” arts, insofar as they appeal to aesthetic taste, or as long as they are created with the specific intent to cause a reaction, whether it be positive or negative.
From Mark Twain to Vincent van Gogh, each genre of art comes with its greatest master. There are many compelling arguments to why this specific artist, musician or writer is the best in their category. In modern days, we don’t have a Mozart, or a Hemingway or even an Andy Warhol. There are many good artists of their own kind and many more are emerging thanks to new technology and new forms of media art. However, many arguments are made as to why these forms of art aren’t considered true forms of art. A few years back and even today, many argue that digital paintings aren’t real art so it is not surprising when people don’t think of a video game as an art form, but it is. The world is at constant change and so is art.
Art is an expressive form of creativity and expression. Art involves the basic elements and principles that aid to form paintings, sculptures, and other forms of artwork.
Art can be defined in many ways by an individual. One can say that any creative output by a person is considered art. Others contend that art must conform to a societal standard and the basis of the creation should be understood by most intellectual people. For example, some contend that computer-generated images, such as fractals, are not art due to the large role played by a computer. E.O. Wilson states “the exclusive role of the arts is to intensify aesthetic and emotional response. Works of art communicate feeling directly from mind to mind, with no intent to explain why the impact occurs” (218). A simple definition may be that art is the physical expression of the ideals formed by the mind.
Art uses beauty, emotion, and drama to influence the audience into expressing their feelings. R.G. Collingwood argues that art is not an object that you can fabricate, it is the expression of emotion in your mind. Giving an expression individualizes it, which rather than describing the emotion in words, the expression is a feature of the statement itself. This means that art shouldn’t have any limits because expression wouldn’t be able to differentiate itself from others. Art is expression, it is important because we need to able to recognize what our feelings are therapeutic. Expression is needed to make art because it gives it a unique sense to it and gives people different emotions based on that expression. Collingwood is right to think that art is expression.
So to answer the question you need to think what is art? To me art is a form of representing a person’s ideas which can be in any form of media whether it be a painting, a film, or a song, a novel or a photograph. For it to be classed as art though it must provoke emotion or thought and show signs of creativity.
The Creative Arts play a significant role in early childhood education as it provides children with a diverse range of skills to enhance their learning and development to meet the needs of succeeding in the 21st century. Educators can promote The Arts by adopting the Reggio Emilia approach to education, encouraging children to co-construct the curriculum to develop their skills in partnership with teachers, families and their cohorts. The focus of this essay is to emphasise the value of Creative Arts in early childhood education by providing a summary of the concepts and skills of the Creative Arts and the four strands; Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Then, ascertain how Creative Arts benefit children’s social development, language and
The arts have influenced my life in amazing ways. Throughout my life, art has been the place I run to and my escape from the world. As I’ve grown older, art has become so much more than that. Every piece of art I create is a journey into my soul. It’s a priceless way to deal with my emotions and my struggles. I create art not only because I enjoy it and because I want to, but because I have to. Somewhere deep inside there is a driving force, urging me to put my heart down on paper. I become emotionally attached to each of my pieces because they are like dashes on the wall marking my growth. Each one is the solution to a problem I have dealt with and overcome.
