Video games first appeared in the 1950s and were urbanized all through the 1960s. They came to importance in the 1970s and established an original and unlike entertainment industry in the world. These games have evolved notably with time and have become a culture on their own. Nevertheless, questions were raised about their effects on people which led to debates in societies about whether or not they should be banned. However, video games should not be banned in this age and time. Video games should not be banned because they help in building our personality procedure, and they are healthy. Up to date researches show that first person shooter games have many advantages such as “faster and more accurate attention allocation, higher spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities.” (C. S. Green & Bavelier, 2012). These games build up analysis and higher ability to deal with problems and boost creativity. Thus, people who play first person shooter games uses there neurons in a more effective way than non-players, when facing problems and difficulties (Granic, Lobel & Engels, 2013). It is important to bear in mind that these studies did not yield the same consequences when it came to other types of technology. Furthermore, according to Granic, Lobel and Engels who wrote the study entitled “The Benefits of Playing Video Games” published in the American Psychologist journal; these types of video games develop reasoning, promote relaxation, avoid nervousness, sharpen up memory and help in making better decisions. There are many people who say that videogames and TV will rot your brain and cause brain damage. Plenty of research and articles are against children playing video games, but there are some that are in favor of video games, and that number is growing every day. Video games can have some medicinal uses from helping patients in physical therapy to improving ones vison. Many people do not see these uses and for every one for video games there are five who are against it, however as that number is slowly growing.
Contrary to popular belief simply playing first person shooter video games does not have a direct effect on the audience, but other factors like the duration and environment greatly determine the effect. There are many studies which focuses on the positive or negative effects of first person shooters, but do not look into deeper causes or factors. An example would be a study which conducts an experiment on how playing first person shooters increase aggressive mental states by forcing participants to play extensive hours rigorously and analyzing their mental states after. This experiment is skewed due to the fact that it only tested long hours of play and related the result to playing first person shooters in general. Under certain conditions, studies have shown that first person shooters have negative effects. However, there is a generalized misunderstanding as the studies have not accurately shown the cause. I became interested in this research topic due to my own experience of periodic play. I read various articles which contradicted one another. Some would claim that these games would cause children to become incredibly aggressive and should not be a part of a healthy life style. While other article claim positive effects such as enhancement of motor skills or an improvement in spatial skills. I was interested because these articles tended to state completely different things. We are currently in an era of technology and many are concerned about the effects of what these graphically advanced games can do. The problem is many people are misinformed due to selective studies. We will be exploring what are the true causes to these positive and negative effects and what causes this skewed perception of first person shooters.

The main arguments against video games are that they lead to addiction, that they provoke violence, and that they impair social development. Video games first appeared in the early 1970's. It all started with a simple white ball bouncing back and fourth on the screen. In 1986, Nintendo introduced its first line of home video game consoles. With the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) on the market, the home video gaming industry surged and immediately became popular among children. Since then, not only have video games increased in popularity, but there have been vast improvements in graphics, game play, and forms of gaming. Today, video games have become the preferred choice of entertainment among children and teenagers. Research done in 1998 has shown that kids who own video games spend an average of 90 minutes a day playing them. Clearly the video gaming industry is a profitable one. With the increasing competition between gaming companies, the advancement of technology and content of games began to change. One of the most significant and concerning changes in gaming is graphics. With the improvements in graphics the content of the game became more and more detailed and realistic. Visually violent actions can now be displayed on the screen. Images of blood, flying body parts, and gore have been integrated into every aspect of today's video games. Violence has always been a common factor in many games, but with the improvements in graphics and capabilities of gaming consoles, a growing number of people are becoming concerned about the effects on our children and society.
Video games are electronic sports which involves user interface and user interactivity. They generate a visual response which helps to provide excitement and entertainment. Video games are played on computers, televisions, or any kind of device with a display screen. People play video games for fun and also because some games are more productive and useful. With growth in technology video games have become very popular in children. In recent years, technology has developed very rapidly. This has led to many arguably both positive and negative changes in our everyday lives. One such change was the increased accessibility of personal computers and gaming consoles as well as the introduction of numerous video games. Due to their entertainment value, these games gained popularity among children and teenagers. Although many concerns have been voiced related to playing video games, especially those that are violent, [e.g., increases in aggressive behavior in children (Anderson & Bushman, 2001)], this paper will argue that certain video games also have beneficial effects. They should thus be played by children, teenagers and adults alike albeit with caution.
