On July 20, 2012, James Holmes purchased a ticket to The Dark Knight Rises premiere in Aurora, Colorado. He entered the theater and sat in the front row among approximately 400 other people. Twenty minutes into the movie, he faked a phone call and exit the theater through an emergency door. He propped the door open with a plastic tablecloth holder. Holmes went to his car, which he parked near the emergency exit door, to change into protective gear and retrieve weapons. At around 12:30 a.m., he reentered through the emergency exit.
