1990’s Sports The 90’s gave us our fair share of great sports movies. Movies such as, Mighty Ducks, Jerry Maguire, Little Big League, and Rudy. One reason that sports movies were so good in the 90’s was that all the children’s movies weren’t animated like they are today. Another reason is that “sports” movies nowadays have to have a deeper message, and the movie ends up being something other than about sports. Sports movies in the 90’s were actually movies about sports. You can’t even find a deeper message, it’s just sports. Sports movies have greatly evolved from the 1990’s. The 1990’s held some of the most historical events and players. in 1991 baseball began going back to the old fashioned ballparks after two decades of domed stadiums. The Duke Blue Devils became a prestige basketball team as the famous Coach K became a legend in the 90’s. One of the most amazing college basketball momen ts of all time happened in 1992 when Christian Laettner scored the last second shot to beat Kentucky in the Final Four. Michael Jordan, in his prime, was thought of as one of the greatest basketball champions of all time. A shooting guard, standing at six-six, Jordan was able to out play anyone in his position. He started his career at the University of North Carolina, where he helped his team win a national championship. He then was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1984-85 season. While playing for the Bulls, Jordan received many awards such as, MVP, five championships, Olympic gold medals, slam dunk contests, and many more defensive and offensive awards. The Fab Five In 1991 in the Crisler Center Arena of Michigan University a revolution of culture rebellion had begun. The Fab Five or formally known as Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, and Ray Jackson. Some might say they were the best thing to happen to basketball but to some they were everything that was wrong with college basketball. In my opinion they were more than just people playing basketball. The Fab Five transformed the way basketball is played and how it is viewed.

While when it came to Michael’s second year in the NBA he broke his foot early in the season and was forced to sit out. While having his year off from the game, he decided to go back to school to finish his final year of college. His 3rd year wasn’t all so great either as the Bulls had another losing season, but they still made it to the playoffs. Michael would also score 63 points to set an NBA playoffs record. As the 1989 season approached the Bulls had plenty of players to help Michael on the court. The Bulls would lose in the second round of the playoffs, though to an eastern powerhouse in the Detroit Pistons. As for the next three seasons, the Bulls would lose to the Pistons in the playoffs. The pistons had a great plan to keep Michael from being a terror on the court by something called the “Jordan Rules.” The Jordan Rules invented by the Pistons meant to rough him up or play him tough. The sports genre of film has for while been very popular with society and can compete with other films of different and other popular genres as well. The sports genre like other genres has been around as long as films and short films have. Some of the earliest sports films include a film produced in the early 1890s titled Corbett and Courtney before the Kinetograph. The sports genre itself can be up for discussion that it only is particular to sports, or athletic fanatics.
