Passion has its place

I grab my tattered bag and clean cleats and run out the door to my awaiting teammates. As I walk down the stairs my legs feel fresh and ready to work. I open up the car door and smile to my two teammates as we head off to practice. This marks the fourth time this week that I had to leave my piles of homework at home to go to practice. However, soccer does not feel like an obligation anymore to my teammates and I. It has become a part of our lives that we could not live without. The main reasons this magnificent sport does not feel like an obligation to myself anymore is because of my love for the game, the feeling I get when I step on the field, and the opportunity it has given me for the future. However, I am extremely grateful I persisted and continued playing because it helped me achieve the one goal I have had all of my life. As a kid I would dream of getting a scholarship to play soccer at a big school. I would spend hours looking at all of the schools and fields and dreaming about where I wanted to go. Then one day I got a call from my coach and he told me that Kansas-State was super interested in me and wanted me to take a visit. I had visited other colleges like TCU and Auburn but when I stepped foot on K-State I instantly fell in love with the elegant white building and the large complexes for sports and athletes. After a few weeks of discussing with my parents, I committed there to fulfill my dreams. Committing was such a relief and exciting experience for me. I had spent so much time working for this moment and finally achieving it meant the world to me.
