In this paper I will be writing about Why we teach social studies. I will also go over why and how we teach social studies. I will also go what makes me a good candidate to teach social studies. I will go through these in good detail and try to provide good information to use in this essay. In this paragraph I will be answering the question of “what is social studies?”. Social studies in my words is the subject consisting of history, economics and geography. The official definition that was given by the NCSS which is the National Council of Social Studies is help students develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an independent world. This first part I will go why we should teach it. The reason why we should teach social studies is very important. One reason is the nonrepeating of history. The quite possibly biggest reason that people give is this one. It is also very true because we need to inform people of the past so they do not repeat the same bad actions. They do this so we do not have a case of a second Hitler. The second reason is to teach concepts of culture and economics. It teaches concepts of culture going over history and geography. It goes over the history of certain cultures through out the world that are important to the development of the world. The geography part teaches of cultures throughout the world that are current and historical. Geography is important because it is very important to have knowledge of the world you live in. It teaches of the history of certain countries that existed a long time ago and ones of that exist today. The second part is how we teach social studies. The way a lot of people and students associate social studies teaching is an old white man lecturing in front of a class. This is generally found to be very boring and not very enticing to participate in these situations. One way to combat this stereotype is too do an engaging and socially connecting class. Ways to make it engaging is to do different types of activities to do during class. This includes simulations, jigsaw lessons, and
The most important social studies that permeate most aspects of life for every human being I think are the culture of people and the environment we live in.
Social studies in kindergarten are mostly used about cultures. One example of how to use social studies in kindergarten is, you would gather with your children and talk about different transportation. You can use pictures to show them the examples and then they will be able to draw the picture on their own.
This Social Problems class introduced me to the practice of identifying and studying social problems. For the future, I now know such terms as ‘subjective concern’, ‘objective conditions’, and many more. I could easily hold a pertinent conversation with any sociologist regarding a certain social problem, and hold my ground. This subject has tied in well with many other areas of my others classes as well. This class has also prepared me for future sociology classes in high school or college, and possibly a career in sociology somewhere down the line.
Throughout this class, there were many social issues and whom they affect discussed. I loved this class for the reason of getting myself more familiar with what is happening around me and around everyone else in the world. This class was an eye opener to major social issues that people are faced with so in this paper, I am going to talk about the seven objectives we were supposed to obtain from this class.
The inability of Social Studies Instruction to make an impact in the society have been blamed on teaching methods that stress the Cognitive domain or recall of knowledge to the neglect of the affective objectives. This point has been buttressed by the Nigerian Institute of teachers as a reason for the failure of social studies to effect changes in the society. The NTI (2006), is of the opinion that, the youths are rich in knowledge of social studies and facts but deficient in expected social values, attitudes and behaviors that commensurate the subject taught and learnt in the classroom.
Should civics be a mandatory class ? “I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion.” - Thomas Jefferson (1820) | Jefferson was well aware of the value of education with regards to the underpinnings of our democracy. Today, Civic and constitutional illiteracy is a phenomenon that is plaguing our country in more ways than one. An immediate response is necessary so as to assuage the situation and one begs to question, could civics being a mandatory class be the solution?

Sociology is important because of many reasons, especially in the context of race and ethnicity. Sociology is very important to me, because it shapes and explains the way everyone thinks. There are many studies in sociology and the topic I chose was race and ethnicity. This topic relates to the experiences I had during my life. Some of the experiences that I faced were because of the color of my skin, culture, religion, and also language.
As a Social Reconstructionist the teacher chooses his or her way of teaching with their students in mind. The role of the teacher is to create information and challenging lessons that will open their student’s eyes to social inequities. School is the ideal place to educate students on global problems; Such as: racism, sexism, global warming, homelessness, etc. Primary task of the teacher is to present daring lessons that will demand emotional responses from students, making them what to do something about it. For example, if a school is state funded it must teach the US constitution on Constitution day; how the lesson is taught is up to the teacher.
Social sciences are the analysis methodically of the social area of the world. They are mixed area of study of human behavior and society which include disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology. Social sciences study methodically the manner in which people behave and how they influence the world around us. It aims to comprehend any given social phenomena by using a methodology borrowed from the physical sciences. Natural sciences are the study of natural world. They use scientific method to study about nature and relate to everything else in nature such as the animals, earth, plants and etc. It covers topics such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
The social sciences have and will continue to be in the future will play an important role in studying and solving problems for both society and its individuals. The disciplines that it encompass vary widely but often need to come together to solve issues and study certain facets of humanity. For my personal use social science is a tool to better understand others, be more sensitive to issues that people may face and to anticipate the way people and society may act in certain situations. A social science lens can be productive in that it helps people be more indiscriminate though understanding people and their behavior. I hope to use the socials sciences to impact other people’s lives in a positive manner. The social sciences to me when used in a well-intended manner are able to not only explain phenomena but also be a solution and or make a situation better. The intent of this essay is to better understand and define the social sciences, touch on the many disciplines of the science in addition to its relationships with other scientific areas.
It is important to study history because it teaches us about not only our own culture but about cultures all around the world. Learning about other cultures and how they look a the world and what their opinion on certain things are , helps us learn better ways of avoiding conflicts. History is just a way of getting us to understand human life and helping us embrace new ways of making a healthier lifestyle. Studying history is very important to all of our society because it answers every question. History is everywhere so why not learn about
Social Studies education is a subject in today’s schools that is undervalued. The study of social studies in schools help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world (Seefeldt, Castle, & Falconer, 2010). When participating in social studies class children are learning so much about who they are, where they came from, how to succeed in the world, and more. Most of what we teach daily includes an aspect of social studies. But, since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 de-emphasis or nonexistence of elementary social studies is the national focus because of high stakes testing (Sunal, & Sunal, 2008). Social studies
Study is necessary to succeed. Study is a good way to develop our mental. Study can increase our experience and knowledge. Study can also train our mind to understand the complexities of the subject chosen and then apply that understanding in practical terms. Through study, we can learn how to discipline ourselves to do something you don’t want to do, which will help us succeed in anything in our life.
When most people think about history they remember a boring class they took in school a long time ago, they recall memorizing important dates, taking map tests, and falling asleep while listening to a lecture. The truth is that history really is an important subject to be teaching students. History is more than just some lecture you receive in class, history lets us look back, see the good things and the bad things, it allows us to learn from our mistakes and prevent such mistakes from happening in the future. Things that happened in the past are still changing things that are happening today. History is needed for everyone, from government leaders down to individuals; everyone has learned one thing or another from history at some point in their life.
