Does Having Tablets Make Education Better? Last year Manteca Unified School District implemented students to use tablets instead of books and writing on paper. How exciting to have technology in the classroom for reading, learning and communicating. Every student from first grade to twelfth would be provided an iPad of their own. Teachers, parents and students would be required to attend a seminar on how to use them. Parents were required to pay a fee for insurance purpose, in case the iPad got broken or needed repair. But what the district did not anticipate were the disadvantages that would come along with using the tablet. There is no one resource that allows for students to create and submit work easily to their teachers so that they could organize, grade and return the work. Students and teachers need to perform multiple tasks that requires the use of different apps for this to happen which may create more work than just receiving a paper assignment, grading and returning it. I interviewed several students and how they felt about working on iPads. Majority stated that they would rather write on paper and read textbooks. They found it difficult to send their teachers their assignments because the app that was needed wasn’t working properly. Many found the tablets not working properly such as keyboard keys, chargers or at times it takes forever to sign in. Majority of students, especially in grammar school do not know how to type. Most iPads that are used in the classroom heavily depend on the quality of Wi-Fi at the school. Multiple use of iPads, phones, computers and laptops are fighting for the Wi-Fi. We all know what happens if the Wi-Fi is slow or you get disconnected: the server can ruin whatever you were working on and ... ... middle of paper ... ...ay from the other students. Eventually, this can be overwhelming not only to the students but the teachers as well. Then there are certain schools that may require parents to purchase their children’s iPads in order for them to attend causing hardships because the schools do not know how long the iPads will last before becoming outdated and purchases will be required again. When that happens, where will the funding come if there is any available? I don’t believe many school districts thought it out has to the numerous problems they would have to face; the initial expense of the tablets, future expenses of the tablets, the malfunctions, the distractions, Wi-Fi complications. Maybe had that been tested before giving every child a tablet, my opinion would be different. Yes technology is the future but for now it is not helping our children’s education get any better.
Education is important, so it would only make sense that technology would have a huge part in it. When children are born, they are placed into a world that is driven by technology. Parents are now using iPads and cellphones to allow their children to get a head start on learning. Now, by the time children are of age to attend school, they are exceedingly prepared to incorporate technology in their education. With this being said, educational institutions must help students get ready to work in a society that encompasses an extensive amount of technology. I believe technology is a path that will continue to grow and it’s growing rapidly so there’s nothing that can be done to end the making of new and advanced technology. Students can benefit from the internet in class. In the classroom, the internet has become so important, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has dedicated $2 billion to increase internet speeds because 70% of schools' internet is too slow (Ovetta Wiggins and David Nakamura). Some schools around the country use iPads to improve learning (Ovetta Wiggins and David Nakamura). Schools overseas also use the internet to aid learning. Students from China on a field trip in the United States post their thoughts and videos from the trip on a shared blog (Marilyn Dryad).
It can cause many distractions, it can be difficult to use and can take away from learning time. People are convinced that technology is an effective tool that will further learning. This can be true, but when you use tablets and different devices in class for an hour every day, the students will not be focused on schoolwork. In the article “Technology in the Classroom: Beginnings and Endings”, Mary Ann Matras suggests that, “The pencil is still the most efficient tool”.

In conclusion, iPads are detrimental to young children's social skills; cause harm to balance, posture, muscle development and fine motor skills; are liable to cause an addiction in younger children; and slow down the ability to process words and sounds as well as limiting vocabulary. These reasons are concrete proof that children up to the age of seven should not be using devices in a one-on-one environment for the six hours daily that they are at school. As a country, do we want to have our younger generation being dependent on their smartphones, tablets, and internet; or do we want strong leaders who can think for themselves? The choice is yours New Zealand.
One of the teachers states how she was skeptical in the beginning because it is difficult for teachers to monitor students when technology is involved, but the use of iPads in the classroom is now appealing to her. Students who are interviewed provide convincing arguments in favor of the technology. They claim that the iPads are “eco-friendly,” “help with organization skills” because they cannot lose or forget assignments or books, and “are really easy to use” (Morristown High School). The video effectively communicates the intended message through the use of personal comments from students, concrete examples, and insight from the perspective of teachers.
Teachers and schools definitely are interested in these types of devices. Every student has a tablet that they rent for 3 years. This has had many beneficial factors to my school life and regular life. In school, students can use the tablet to take notes faster than writing them on paper, we can walk through powerpoints with the teacher, and we have access Google/Google Drive all of the time. NDP uses Google a lot in their daily life, to look for research, write papers or make presentations, etc. These tablets help save paper too because everything can be online and teachers don’t have to print out multiple copies of worksheets and notes.

According to Cam Lincoln “Students who used the iPad version of the textbook scored 20 percent higher on standardized test versus students who learned with traditional textbook”(parag.2).This demonstrates that, students who used the iPad version of the textbook learned more effectively than the students who learned with traditional textbooks. Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. When students have no desire to learn and are given tools to distract themselves technology hurts them, or rather their test scores, more than students who learn with book or oral based teaching because the absence of distraction. Computers and iPads are very difficult to repair or replace compared to books, and because most people are not yet “technologically literate” enough to perform basic tasks for the maintenance of their computer, then it would just be easier to use books. These issues create question as to if students are ready for classes to require computer knowledge when some have difficulty learning the material as it has always been learned for thousands of years.
