The United States of America was built upon the morals of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The prohibition of marijuana use is not only unconstitutional, but unethical. People deserve to make choices for themselves, unless it is harming others. The government

does not have the right to dictate what can and can’t be consumed by individuals. The prohibition of marijuana robs the basic human rights people deserve and goes against the morals this country was founded upon.

Another valid reason to legalize marijuana would be the medical benefits associated with marijuana. Its proven through a multitude of studies that marijuana prevents cancer from growing and spreading. Cannabis use on oncology patients show more effective treatment than some man-made pharmaceuticals. As an added benefit it is also highly effective in relieving nausea and vomiting, especially in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The list of medicinal benefits from marijuana use ranges from preventing pain, nausea, and anxiety to treatment of cancer and some seizure disorders. Legalizing marijuana will promote research of the medicinal use in other illnesses which can lead to more effective treatments in health problems.

The legalization of marijuana would create an economic boom. Legalizing marijuana would be the beginning of a whole new industry, therefore, will result in the growth of new businesses and creation of jobs. Not only will the government be receiving money from the new businesses, but the amount of financial gain from taxing marijuana will be a significant amount. Another increase in the amount of money the government will receive comes from the tax money used to fund criminals for non-violent marijuana related offenses. The increase in money the government will receive can potentially get the country out of debt and increase government funding in communities.

The benefits of legalizing marijuana significantly outweigh the risks. The fact of the matter is that there is no valid reason marijuana is illegal, so why not legalize it. Legalizing marijuana doesn’t force anyone to use it, it just allows people to have the liberty and right to choose to use it, and for others allow the right to their pursuit of happiness.
