Thee, thy and what? In high school, the literature curriculum is based off writing essays, reading articles and prepping for college English. High school English is mostly centered around great playwrights, poets, and artists. Yet, some believe that the people chosen are useless to our writing style today. One playwright who is definitely questionable is William Shakespeare whose last piece was written over 400 years ago; In Shakespeare's time, the daily phrases and words such as ‘thee and thy’ are so disparate and archaic from the English language today. Since Shakespeare's time and the modern time today barely speak alike, is it even worth it to learn about his writing style? For instance, “as you interpret Shakespeare’s characters, you are practicing figuring out life’s characters. Struggling with the complexities involved in interpreting Shakespeare is a superb preparation for struggling with the complexities of life. As you interpret Shakespeare’s characters, you are practicing figuring out life’s characters”(Why Read Shakespeare?). Shakespeare helps readers work through and understand problems that are present in the real world. This connection between the writer and reader is strong because the reader feels comfortable to the writer because the writer understands what the reader can go through. As a teenager, you encounter many problems that will tug at your heartstrings and your emotions. These strong emotions make you feel weak and small but, knowing that there is a solution and someone who can relate makes you feel sane. To conclude, students feel closer to Shakespeare because he understands life's troubles, students will want to read him because he lets them know that with any problem there is a solution and it will get better. As a young adult, they need to know that advice so they can keep pushing and be a better
