With the amazing improvement on the computer network and the vast amount of source documents available in the Web, the task of recognizing plagiarism is getting beyond the reach of any human cognition. To make it worse, proving a work as an act of plagiarism demands evidence of source documents. This situation gives rise to a need of an automatic plagiarism detection, which motivated us to study this approach.
Plagiarism is very often done smartly, for example by paraphrasing or obfuscating the texts so that only a small part of document are found similar. The detection of plagiarism can be done as extrinsic which compare a suspicious document against a collection of references, whereas intrinsic which do not need any resources just the suspicious document because it is based in chunking the original document and study its style writing variation. Plagiarism of Electronic material has been very difficult to detect in the past, but new technology has made detecting electronic plagiarism of material such as Internet content, online databases, and e-books possible. Educational institutions are now able to check content submitted by students’ using software such as DupliChecker and Turnitin, which check work against current and archived web pages and databases of previously submitted student work consisting of journals, assignments and essays. Students can also take an active part by checking their work using similar software made available to the public.

Many colleges find plagiarism unacceptable and if caught, it usually results in being kicked out of that school. Plagiarism can be used on a number of things, including essays, newspapers, and magazine articles.
Plagiarism, conventionally defined as literary theft, is the stealing and replication of the original ideas of another person without requesting for consent or crediting the author of a recorded or authored work (Heath 4). It may take several forms, for example, presenting an idea as original even though it has been derived from an existing source, or even neglecting to put quotation marks when quoting a sentence from borrowed work. In as much as plagiarism is widely regarded as a bad practice, it is at times committed unintentionally. As a result, there is an anti-plagiarism policy in several academic institutions and heavy penalties are imposed on individuals involved in plagiarism.
In a matter of minutes a student can find the work and answers for their classes using the internet that is on their phones and laptops. At Harvard 125 students all cheated on an exam using their laptops and phones to cheat on an exam. (Source C). Lou Bloomfield, at U.Va, has a huge class and found out, “A few of his students had simply copied from earlier work. Others had lifted at least a third of their papers from someone else” (Source D).
There are so many ways that students use technology to cheat and so many devices that they use to accomplish this unethical behavior. The many different things that are commonly used in today’s society to make our life easier, but it is used in the wrong way are mostly small hand-held devices. Such things are cell phones, digital camera, PDA’s and lap-tops. These items are so high tech that they are able to store large amount of data that can be utilized to gather information to be used in assignments, exams and homework in the ways of cheating. Rather than worry about study for the test, students simply break into database and change their final grade.
Plagiarism, or the unaccredited use of another's work or ideas, has become more and more of a problem in recent times than it was in the past. According to statistics found in a survey conducted by the Free Press, 58% of high school students let someone copy their work in 1969, but by 1989 this number had risen to 97%. The expansion of the World Wide Web and the number of people accessing the Web on a regular basis has caused an epidemic of plagiarism in this country, especially among students. This is a serious problem that must be addressed because many students feel that if they are not getting in trouble for cheating, than it is okay.
Over the past decade or so, we have seen a huge increase in cheating in our schools. The introduction of the Internet into most homes and schools and other technological advances are some of the main causes. Students are misusing the new technologies to find new and more high tech ways to cheat. During testing students are receiving answers via text messaging devices, they are downloading notes to iPods and graphing calculators, they are picture messaging exams with their mobile phones, and they are even hiring look-alike experts to take the exams for them. They can use the internet to easily plagiarize a paper; they can pay a company to write the paper for them, they can even pay to use a prewritten paper from a database. The internet and technology are making it easier and easier for students to cheat, and as technology continues to advance, we will continue to see a rapid rise in cheating.
Today’s world is mainly relied on technology such as computers and smartphones and has been a great contribution to make people lives easier in the sense of communication, activities, and time consuming. Technology has also increased the ability for students to make cheating easier for them to display good grades on tests or homework. Furthermore, from the past generation to this generation cheating has increased dramatically up to sixty-four percent according to David Crary article. Moreover, cheating is getting worse and as a society everyone needs to play a role to be able to stop cheating from happening because it is not doing anyone any good.

Etymologically, the word plagiarism comes from Latin “plagiare” meaning to “kidnap” (Das, and Panjabi, 2011). The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines plagiarize as: “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own: use (another's production) without crediting the source” (“Plagiarize,” n.d.). Essentially it is a dishonest act consisting in wrongly appropriate what is not yours (“What Is Plagiarism?,” n.d.). Those nuances in its definition may explain the different types of plagiarism. For example teachers and principals in an academic institute are very strict towards this matter so, it can lead to many consequences such as suspension, failure or even the risk of being expelled from a school and possibly even a school board. To avoid these consequences it is important to avoid plagiarizing, which can be a very hard thing to do for people who consistently rely on someone else’s work.
