Even the products found in your home can cause addiction and even death. Some of these can be inhalants, there are many different types of inhalants and reasons to why people use them. Inhalants can have severe short-term and long-lasting effects on the brain and organs in your body. They contain dangerous substances that have mind-altering properties when inhaled. Inhalants are a man-made mood alternating drugs, they are cheap but hazardous. People use inhalants to slow brain activity, and make them feel calmer by changing their mood. The user can either breathe in the inhalant, sniffle or snort, or spraying it directly into their nose and mouth. Inhalants in the early 1800s were used as intoxicants. During the 1940s and 50s the use of solvents
and gasoline were popular and the abuse of inhalants spread among young people. In the 1960s the use of solvents had become a problem, and recently homeless children have been using these inhalants to numb the pain of hunger. There are four types of inhalants, volatile solvents, gases, aerosols, and nitrites. Volatile solvents are glue, paint thinners and removers, gasoline, and other office supply solvents. Gas inhalants are found in household products like, lighters, propane tanks, chloroform, and even whipped cream dispensers. Aerosol inhalants that are most common are spray paint, deodorant, and hairsprays. Lastly, nitrites are made up of cyclohexyl nitrite, amyl nitrite, and butyl nitrite. The street term for nitrite is “poppers” or snappers”. Inhalants can have short-term and long term- effects on the user’s body. Short term effects like alcohol such as slurring, dizziness, and feeling “high”. Since the effects of inhalants don’t last long people may inhale the fumes repeatedly, this can cause hallucinations. Long-term effects are bone marrow, liver and kidney and damage, nerve damage, brain damage. In conclusion inhalants are in many household products and can cause severe short-term and long-lasting effects in your body. There are many types of and reasons to why these unintentionally harming drugs can cause addiction and even death. These drugs have been used throughout generations and have spread as all over the world.
Most of the time, it is from smoking. The tissue in the lungs will become inflame and produce mucous because of exposure to these chemicals. Theophylline and ß2 agonist will act to relax and dilate the airways and allow more oxygen to enter. They will also decrease the lungs sensitivity so that they do not react so much to inhaled chemicals.

Breathing in and out is an innate behavior that we are born with; also, it is a behavior that people take for granted. Let’s say, people who smoke think a cough, or a cough with phlegm is a sign that they are about to get a cold, but then again it can be a sign of a potential health problem like emphysema, asthma, or tuberculosis. People smoke for different reasons; nevertheless, it is an addiction that they can recover from. It may take them several tries to quit smoking, but they can quit. People don’t think about the harm that they are putting on their lungs and alveoli when they put a cigarette to their mouth. For example, many long time smokers are diagnose with emphysema every minute. Emphysema is an example of a chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) that has causes numerous deaths and disabilities in the United States of America. Also, smoking is the number one causes of death in developed countries.
Before D.A.R.E., I was not mindful of the extensive damage cigarettes and other tobacco products cause. Cigarette smoke contains over 200 harmful chemicals, including rat poison. Because of nicotine, cigarettes are highly addictive. As a result, smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. It causes over 400,000 deaths annually.
Have you ever wondered what happens when you inhale the liquid from a vape? Many people that vape think it's a better alternative than smoking and actual cigarette, or they think it's safer than cigarettes. Vaping actually has many dangers that come with it, like it can cause the body to become weaker in fighting infections, scar the lungs, or can blow up in your face. And though it might be way safer than real cigarettes, there are many things in those vapes that can cause health dangers in the body. Though it's still early in the vape life, many researches have been done to prove of these dangerous things that can cause harm to the inside and outside of the body.
Many believe that vaping is not harmful to your health but recent findings prove otherwise. I believe that vaping actually is harmful to the body of the vapor as opposed to popular belief that there are no health side-effects. Vaping is extremely harmful to the lungs and heart of the vaper.
The effects of inhalant use are many. Almost all the abused products offer effects similar to those of anesthetics, which are slowing down the body functions. Depending upon the dosage, the user may feel a slight stimulation, less inhibition, or lose consciousness altogether. There is also something called Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. This means that the user can die after one inhalant use or after many. Immediate effects inhalants offer are nausea, sneezing, coughing, nosebleeds, feeling/looking tired, bad breath, lack of coordination, and loss of appetite. There is considerable damage to ones heart, kidney, brain, liver, bone marrow, and other organs. Mothers who use inhalants during their pregnancy will leave their baby to suffer similar results of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There are many long terms effects as well. Permanent brain damage can occur. A person doesn’t even have to be doing it for very long before the brain starts to get clogged. Loss of memory is one of the first signs of brain damage.
People often turn to cigarettes to suppress hunger or relieve stress (Dichter). After a short period of time, a person can become addicted to the satisfaction they get from smoking a cigarette. Certain tobacco products contain toxins, carcinogens, and poisons that are all extremely harmful to the human body. 60 chemicals that are contained in a tobacco cigarette are cancer-causing agents (Wexner). It is these chemicals that make cigarettes, as well as other tobacco products, so addictive to their users.
Goal: I want to persuade my audience that smoking is a health risk to all of society and that smokers should be encouraged to quit.
Did you know three cigarettes could get one addicted? Every time one takes a puff of a cigarette
The damage that can be done in the inside of the body will last with the person throughout their lifetime. It blackens the lungs and causes lung cancer. Secondhand smoke can also lead to heart disease. Researchers have found that some deaths result in ischemic heart disease. “Nevertheless, this is likely and underestimate” (Wendy Max), told LiveScience. Studies show that people have a greater risk of lung cancer as opposed to heart disease. Secondhand smoke plays a role in our personal hygiene. It can lead to smells within our body, clothes, and hair. Smoking and secondhand smoke can cause us to age faster. Scientists out of the state of Oregon have also took note on how secondhand smoke can build up a compound that affects our blood and urine. “There is experimental evidence from nonsmokers studies where you put nonsmokers in a room, blow smoke into the room, and measure their artery function, that you see the platelets get sticky, which can cause clots and lead to a heart attack, and the ability of the arteries to dilate decreases very rapidly”, says Dr. Matthew McKenna. This cannot only harm our blood but also harm urine within the body. “Some people may say they’re not exposed to secondhand smoke, but they forget about the smokey bus ride they took in the morning or when they walked through the park and someone was smoking near them.” (Max). This compound
You are not the only one affected by the toxic chemicals released by your cigarette stick. People around you can’t help but inhale it too so keep in mind that second hand smoke contains a mix of about 200 chemicals such as ammonia, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide, and carbon monoxide that are poisonous and can potentially cause cancer. Second hand smoke also accounts for over 3,000 lung cancer deaths every year and is responsible for about 40,000 cardiovascular-related deaths.
Smoking and Vaping have similar health risks that overlap at some places. Some of the health risks of smoking, which are well known, are lung cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, bronchitis, and many others. These are caused by the thousands of chemicals in a single cigarette. Some of the well known ingredients are formaldehyde, nicotine, arsenic, tobacco, tar, and ammonia. As previously stated, formaldehyde and nicotine are two very addictive and cancer causing carcinogens, but another chemical, Arsenic, is used as rat poison and can cause cancer, neurological disorders, heart attacks, and other circulatory and cardiovascular diseases. Tobacco is another main ingredient in smoking which can cause mouth cancer and also contains nicotine. Tar is a very nasty substance which can cause multiple diseases and illnesses such as emphysema, bronchitis, lung
Investigate some of the reasons why individuals take up smoking and why might people continue to smoke?
