Why People Nerf
Why do you nerf? The common response would be, “Because it’s fun.” Nerf is an exhilarating sport; there is something about running around shooting foam at people that is loads of fun. Problem solved, people do it because it is fun. There are a lot of different aspects that go into defining the fun in Nerf.
Nerf is a war game, and thus has to be treated uniquely in defining the psychological rewards it gives so many people. Like real war, Nerf invokes a rush of adrenaline and a ‘battle mentality’ (which will be discussed later). Like a game, there is a sense of lightheartedness and a sport-like physical and mental aspect, in which injuries are not meant to occur.
Nerf rewards humans on an almost uncountable number of levels. Many animals, and almost all mammals, play war games. Cubs, puppies, kittens and the like are known to wrestle, bite, chase and surprise. Through these examples, we see that even the most primitive subconscious aspects of the human psyche are satisfied in mock battle.
On a more modern level, Nerf allows for participants to engage in combat without the physical aptitude required by the military, the consequences of death, or the moral significance of taking another life. In fact, I kill the same four people every weekend, and they kill me.
The modification of Nerf guns satisfies the scientific urge to take apart, examine, and rebuild. Although most members of the nerfing community follow the modifications and innovations of a small percentage of this group, every person will go about modifying in a slightly different way. Even following mod instructions is a mental exercise.
This lands us upon another of the important rewards of Nerf: the community. Belonging to a community is one of the most basic needs of humans. Because this community exists in a bundle of electrons it includes many people who wouldn’t normally consider themselves social; but get them to a Nerf war, and they are ‘just one of the guys’.
After this general analysis of the rewards of nerfing, I would like to go into further detail in relation to two of the most prominent facets of Nerf.
The Battle Mentality
The battle mentality that Nerf causes in people is comprised of many different behaviors. Because Nerf is just a game, the behaviors mentioned should all be looked at through a filter of fun and sport.
What would changing the definition of nerd do to anyone? First, the general definition of being a nerd has been engraved in everybody’s brains. This definition has the image is a white skinny boy with glasses and doesn't play sports. This boy usually hangs out by themselves or with other nerds. Old games were fun because the way they made the old games like GameCube was a system that you could play two players and it comes with many games you could play. And the old system controllers were more nice and they feel better. The new games have many thing on the controllers. The old ones have a little of stuff on the controllers. I think the main thing that sucks about the new games is that you need to pay to play.

Previous research has come up with results that support the idea that violence effects the player, but studies such as the one conducted by Anderson and Ford (1997) can only support this on a short term basis. In these experiments players’ were exposed to one of three different game types, highly aggressive, mildly aggressive or a control game. After the game, hostility, anxiety and depression were measured using a checklist. The experiment found that hostility was increased in both game condition groups compared to the control, although the high aggression led to significantly more anxiety. This shows that playing aggressive video games can have short-term negative effects on the players and they emotional states. It also supports the idea that more aggressive games create more hostility and aggression in the players.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.
Well, since I was a little boy, I have always loved video games. There was something about it that made me feel great. While I didn’t know what it was back then, I believe I have an answer now. It’s about the journey, the adventure of playing a video game. When you pick up a controller or log on to a PC game, you are entering a world of vast possibilities and endless adventures. I’ve had so much fun jumping into the world of a video game.The experience of doing so is unlike anything else. I also play video games for the connection that I get when playing with others. Whether it’s with friends or complete strangers, it can be a lot of fun to interact with others in a virtual world, competing or cooperating with them. It’s also about that first time experience playing a video game. It’s unlike anything else I have ever done in my life. Let’s take Destiny again for example. Destiny’s raids, the quests that I mentioned earlier, not only require a tremendous amount of teamwork and patience but also require a fair amount of skill, as these activities are some of the most difficult activities a player can attempt. Allow me to clarify even more. In Destiny’s raids, there is a boss battle at the end, a final showdown that will prove that our team can conquer anything. The First World War is considered one of the deadliest conflicts in history, its more than nine million casualties exacerbated by the advancement in war technology. However, the physical damage the war inflicted on its participants pales in comparison to the emotional scars seared into the minds of these young men. The modest percentage of veterans who had survived the carnage still returned home ruined by the bloodshed. Not only did these warriors have to cope with the trauma that inevitably came with simply being involved in the war, but also with the threat of the rival side weaponizing their subconscious to turn on themselves. The introduction of organized psychological warfare changed the face of combat in a much deeper level than machine guns, poison gas, or tanks and aircrafts ever could. Psychological warfare, or psywar, was used throughout the Great War to ultimately influence the behavior of whoever or whomever it is targeted towards, and, along with other sources of trauma, forced those whom enlisted to detach themselves from their emotions, transforming them to empty shells of their former selves.

In a society driven by technology, video games are becoming more popular each and everyday. People of all ages enjoy video games in their free time; these games allow the player to become an athlete, a soldier, or a professional fighter at the tip of their fingers. The biggest problem with these video games is that they are becoming too violent. In today’s society, children often brag about the new video game they bought, and the number of people they have managed to kill while playing these games. Video games have become realistic, causing them to intrigue a larger amount of children. Many of these violent video games encourage killing and fighting of enemies, or strangers in the game. Each year a new game system, and hundreds of video games are released, and millions of kids go out and buy them and spend hours playing. Video games have a large effect on school performance and time spent with family. Children would prefer to play their games than sit down and talk with their parents (Saleem, 2012).
Overall, video games can greatly affect a person. The effects of video games include social ineptitude, aggression, and personality issues. Video games ruin relationships between family and friends. People waste hours excessively playing video games because of addiction and its appeal. Video game categories such as MMORPGs promote social ineptitude and even violence. Video games are the primary reason for a persons aggressive behavior and change in personality. Increased graphics and levels make it hard for players to distinguish the difference between reality and fantasy in violent video games. It is obvious that the negative effects of video games greatly outweigh the positives.
The experiments show that after playing violent games, teenagers become to the aggressive way. These experiments were proven by researches of different universities of USA.
