If all the person has is a picture of the person they are talking to and they haven’t heard or seen this person shows they are not having real emotional interactions. Real emotional interactions are what makes relationships real. Catfishing is just one person lying to the other person about who they really are. A big example of this is the Manti Teo catfishing story. In the article “Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax: What deceit lurks in Internet's depths.” Jonsson (2013) states “Those willing to exploit the vulnerable goodwill of others have always been hanging around the fringes of society, of course, but the social media age has given the practice a different and disturbing spin: It's as if the very anonymity of the Internet morphs into a tendency toward faith in other people.” (para. 11) Jonsson (2013) also states “Joseph said. A catfisher’s internet addiction can lead them into becoming a catfisher. How long a person stays on the internet can make the person feel like they can be anyone, thus losing touch of reality. Internet addiction is a depressing thing, people spend all the time on the internet and they don’t have real life connections or relationships. Internet addiction, even though not as bad as other addictions, is toxic. In the article “The association of internet addiction with attachment styles,
And the heart, even in this commercial age, finds a way”(222)—implying that, although not perfect, online romance can work. He evidences his statement by illustrating how online dating “slows things down” (221), “puts structure back into courtship” (221), and “is at once ruthlessly transactional and strangely tender” (221). For example, he describes how couples might “exchange email for weeks or months” (221) when using a dating site, effectively slowing the dating process and adding more structure to courtship. He displays the transactional and sensitive side of Internet dating when he points to Internet exchanges between couples that “encourage both extreme honesty (the strangers-on-a-train phenomenon) and extreme dishonesty, as people lie about their ages, their jobs, whether they have kids and, most often, whether they are married” (222).
...e treated in a similar way of identity theft. Identity theft is a serious crime in which someone steals your personal information and pretends to be you to obtain resources that were not easily obtainable when they were themselves. Catfish is relatable to that crime because someone who catfish a person pretends to be someone they are not. Innocent people who feel as though they are talking to someone real and then find out that it not who they have been talking to all along. Therefore feel as though they have been deceived. The person who identity has been stolen through someone trying to catfish another person may go through the same obstacle as someone who’s been a victim of identity theft. The individual would have to go through the internet seeing fake profile and online pictures and trying to convince others that those profiles are fake and not really them.
...of vulgarity, due to it being seen as “an easy way to set oneself apart,” and as individuals strain to be more notable then the other profiles, a discord can form between the users normal ethics/beliefs and those portrayed online.

The fourth reason is sexual-identity anxiety also named sexual maturation disorder. These people are anxious about revealing their true sexual identity. They often had negative experiences in the past where people walked out of them after unveiling the truth about their sexuality. This type of infidelity encompasses a romantic or sexual relationship that is done with another individual other than one’s spouse. Not only it starts there, but is also maintained online through the use of various communication and interaction platforms. Online infidelity takes place when an individual who is already engaged in a serious relationship, undertakes an involvement in computer based interactive relationship. There has been a raging debate as to whether the interactions that occur in the chat rooms amount as infidelity. Online infidelity has been categorized as infidelity since it encompasses exclusivity, which is a privilege accorded to the spouse and which is broken through the chat room conversations. The level of secrecy involved in the conversations in these chat rooms never gets to the spouse. Similarly, the authors of our textbook claim “even if the couple does not meet, men and women still tend to think of online relationships as a form of betrayal that is associated with relationship problems.” (Lamanna, Riedmann, & Stewart, 2018, p.
Sexting is an issue that many people are still unclear on. Sexting is the exchanging of nude or seminude pictures or videos by cell phones (Hewitt and Driscoll). These media files can be exchanged by teens as young as 11 to married adults in their 40s. Sexting can hold serious consequences, such as being charged with child pornography, having to register in the sex offenders list, and even facing jail time (Hewitt and Driscoll). Some believe that some individuals want to sext in order to gain the attention that they aren’t getting from significant other. A woman who had participated in sexting even claimed that a man she sexted with made her feel wanted (Tapper). The same article states that men believe “if you get a woman to send you a naked picture, you’re cool. It’s an ego boost.” Although many know sexting can be a crime, many individuals who sext do i...
