Sports are a big part of majority countries culture, from supporting franchise from sport to sport they all have the same issue of PED being used by the athletes being paid to perform in the sport. These controversial essay will side with the banning of PED use in any type of activity whether it is professional or amateur. Both sides of the arguments will be discussed however the focus will be focused towards the banning of these very harmful drugs. This may be true that if the league approved of the use of PED, they would of course try to use these drugs in the most professional and safest way possible for the athletes but Performance enhancing drugs no matter how beneficial they are to your body they are still drugs. From the results of an experiment the results showed “these results suggest creatine supplementation, despite promoting acute muscle strength improvement, may be harmful as it induces oxidative stress and decrease total antioxidant status” (Perc rio 7). A number of volunteers both men and women took part of this experiment to see what effects the PED creatine could have on your body. The results were very interesting both the men and women saw success in this 3 month experiment increasing the number of exercises, weight gain, push-ups, sit up, etc., from before they were taking the creatine drug. But this cheat way of becoming more athletic came with its issues, many of the volunteers developed many physiological issues with anger issues, depression, and self-consciousness of their own body. Despite the athletic enhancements these drugs give you, hopefully more athletes become more aware of the consequences that come from this cheat method of getting …show more content…
PED are known to be really good stress relivers, they could relax the muscles of the body from a hard day of practice or after a hard fought game. However these are very risky medications compared to your average message or ice cold bath. Using PED can lead to injury as noted in this experiment when “other risky injection practices reported by participants included injecting small muscle groups and injecting insulin. Small muscle groups are targeted in belief that this will lead to localized growth however this practice greatly increases the chance of hitting a nerve”(Larance 684). Using these drugs as medication or to improve athletic ability are risky towards ones health. Doing any kind of injection can be fatal if not done by a professional especially injections like PED that energizes your body to perform and grow bigger and stronger. Medication is supposed to be doctor approved and be approved by the organization of the sport, there are reasons why PED are banned and why when a patient is hurt doctors don’t attempt to heal them with human growth hormones. PED should not be used as a medication for pros, amateurs or anybody who is hurt they are many other medications or method that can be used to heal one’s body that are both healthier and safer than
The problems with performance enhancing drugs are that they give the user unfair advantages over other athletes and come with many health risks such as baldness. Steroid use can result in very substantial legal consequences and can ruin the user’s reputation. There are many alternatives to steroids but not all of them are safe. Different organizations have different rules on steroids, but in most cases, the user can get suspended, fined, or even both. Various types of steroids can have various short-term or long-term side effects. There are several types of steroids, the most popular ones being anabolic steroids. Historically, steroids have been around for many years, but the debate surrounding them started recently, more specifically a few decades ago. An important term to know is anabolic steroids which are made to work with the user’s muscle mass. Another term to know is clarified by Ida Walker, author of the book, Steroids: Pumped Up and Dangerous, published by Mason Crest Publishers in 2008, defines, peliosis hepatis is a rare condition in which cysts filled with blood form in the liver, if the cysts were to pop then internal bleeding would occur. A positive argument about steroids is stated by Adrianne Blue, author of the essay, “Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Legal,” published in the book Athletes and Drug Use, published in 2009, disputes, “Blue concludes that legalizing performance- enhancing drugs can protect athletes from dangerously abusing them.” The utilization of performance enhancing drugs has left a giant scar on sports and has compromised the achievements of many athletes; therefore, they are transforming the sports world into a drug filled world.
For those who've never heard of the term PED's, Performance enhancing drugs are any supplements that are considered to allow one perform better in their respective sports ,such as anabolic steroids and HGH( Human Growth hormones). The effects of these supplements can range from expediting muscle to increasing one's stamina. PEDs began to become the center of controversy when the I.O.C set up a medical commission to oversee the fight against doping, which ultimately lead to the ban of PED's in professional sports. Stemming off from the I.O.C...
Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be allowed in sports. PEDs are a form of cheating. Not only are they cheating, but they can harm the athlete's body too. There are many long-term health risks we don't even know about! Finally, PED’s make the game unfair because the kids with natural talent are not able to showcase their great skills.
Some of the side effects of PEDs include balding, worsening acne, and infertility. Other side effects can be more severe. Prolonged use may lead to violent behavior. A condition commonly known as “Roid Rage”. The tragic story of Lyle Alzado shows that perhaps the worst side effect is death. Lyle Alzado, died due to a brain tumor that doctors believe is directly linked to his admitted use of steroids. And yet countless athletes put their very lives at risk daily in search of sensational stats.
Since the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece, athletes have struggled to find a way to gain the competitive edge. Early rituals included consuming wine and brandy before an event, eating potent mushrooms, and even concocting magic potions thought to give the athlete improved performance ability (Phillips, 2000, p.53). A constant battle has been fought as the International Olympic Committee struggles to keep drug testing up-to-date and effective. We have come to associate drug use with a few famous names of fallen heroes, such as Ben Johnson and the most recent, C.J. Hunter, but few people realize just how widespread drug use is in Olympic sports and how small a percentage of offenders ever get caught. This presents the International Olympic Committee with one of its greatest challenges: trying to keep its drug testing procedures at a par with the technology of today’s pharmacists. Should the International Olympic Committee just face the facts and realize that athletes will continue to try and use performance-enhancing drugs, and hence turn their backs and act as though nothing is happening? I feel as though they should become more stern toward athletes that are caught, and let the world know that they are going to do whatever they can to catch those who use these drugs.
However, the benefits of PEDs are far from exaggerated. Researcher Dr. Shalender Bhasin and his colleagues from Boston University of Medicine examined the benefits of PEDs in a recent study. This study aimed to determine the effects of testosterone supplements, a common PED in sports including baseball, on the average man. The subjects of their study were forty men from ages nineteen to forty with standard body weights, who had experience with lifting
Most football players never get a chance to play in the NFL so a handful decide to use PEDS to achieve playing with the pros. This looks like a good idea until you realise that this that it destroys your body. There is a point where your muscles
Steroids became an option to athletes in the Olympics and other major sporting events during the 1950’s. But this use of steroids among athletes only became widely apparent when Canadian sprint runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroid use after winning the gold medal for the one hundred-meter dash during the 1988 Olympics (Francis, 45). Now a skinny fifteen-year-old can just walk down to the local gym and find people who either sell or know how to get in contact with those who sell the drug that will make him envious of his friends. Steroids are an attractive drug. While steroids seem harmless to the unaware user, they can have a risky effect. Most of the time whether the users are new or experienced, they do not know the dangerous consequences steroids can have on their bodies and their minds. Though steroids cause a relatively insignificant number of deaths in our society, the banning of steroids is justified because steroids have a lot of side effects not known to the uninformed user.
The problems for males is that PEDs gives them breast tissue development, shrinks testicles, Cause baldness, and also reduces sperm production. For females it deepens their voice, hair grows more everywhere, and also ends breast development. PEDS also cause blood cancer, strokes, heart attacks, thyroid problems, and for men feminization. These drugs are easy to take but can also easily kill you. Once you start seeing some of your body changes, you will want to have more. Once you get addicted you might see some bad physical appearances. People who take anabolic steroids should know they come with major physical side effects. Once you start getting those appearances and everybody notices it will be the time your coach or trainer realizes it.
Many athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs, or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition dates back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher, and recover at an increased pace.
Performance enhancing drugs are known to cause numerous diseases such as tumors, cancer, and can cause fertility problems. There are numerous cases of players dying or ruining their careers because they have gotten caught up in getting bigger and taking these drugs For instance in professional wrestling alone, 28 people have died because of PED’s (All of these people are died younger than 45 years old.) (wrestlinginc.com, 2010). There are hundreds of known PED’s. The most commonly used drug is steroids which gives you an increased risk of heart and liver disease. Players use this drug because it makes you have better endurance, it makes your blood flow faster and it makes you stronger. Another popular PED is Human Growth Hormone. This drug has been and still ...
However, there is only one acceptance of that rule. If an athlete is injured, prescriptions for certain drugs used in recovery are allowed. These drugs may consist of certain chemicals that enhance muscle growth. Some athletes have used this to their advantage and have received prescriptions for these drugs for their own personal benefits, while other athletes are using it for recreational purposes. This, however, is not the only way to obtain PEDs; there are also other ways such as buying them from an underground market.
Performance Enhancing Drugs Should sports allow the use of performance enhancing drugs? performance-enhancing substances, also known as performance-enhancing drugs (PED), are substances that are used to improve any form of activity performance in humans. A well-known example involves doping in sport, were banned physical performance–enhancing drugs are used by athletes and bodybuilders. sports should not allow the use of performance enhancing drugs. Even though PED can have a huge impact on recovery times, I believe they should not have them.
Performance enhancing drugs (Peds) have been around for centuries, most of the time they have been illegal, but early in the time these illegal drugs were encouraged! People were doing all types of drugs, such as,Cannabis, Anabolic steroids and many more. These drugs only became important when people started realizing that they were causing diseases and certain cancers. This is why laws need to be changed. I believe that performance enhancing drugs are bad for you, and cause disease which is why the world of sports should handle this situation differently.
Overall it is clear that the need to use performance enhancing drugs is outweighed by the consequences and issues caused by performance enhancing drugs. Sporting events such as the world cup, the Olympics or the World Series make young children feel inspired and encouraged about what they could achieve through dedication and hard work. I feel it is important for the sporting industry as well as the athletes to return respectability to the sport. By
