Recommended: What are the dangers of littering
It’s the summer of 2017, we have arrived to New York. As we drive down the backed up streets, I can see trash floating around the windy street. My eyes look at the trash and I think of all of those people just casually littering and not thinking about the damage they’re causing. Finally we arrive to our Airbnb, and I we have to park the car off of the street because it was street cleaning day. I believe that littering is wrong and should be stopped. Luther King presents, “ 50% of littered items are cigarette butts”(King and Marshall). At first I was shocked, but then it made sense, they don’t care about their body or the environment. Why do they really do it though, “Tossing it out of the car window is the easiest and simplest way to dispose”(King …show more content…
Keep America Beautiful is an organization that fights against littering. In their research, they found that, ”the presence of litter in a community decreases property values by a little over 7%”(KAB). People who litter are slowly ruining their cities economy by decreasing property values. As KAB adds, they are “Fire hazards that impacts local wildlife”(KAB). They’re hurting the environment also. Like from my story about New York City, littering just makes the city less appealing. Places like New York City are already being known as litter pits, because of littering. Making those cities being less visited and becoming less of an …show more content…
In PLoS One’s studies, they found that “Reduce littering when there are larger numbers of people (6 or more) in the immediate vicinity”(PLoS One). People know that it’s damaging the environment and they won’t do it in front of people, but they still do it when less people are around. PLos one concludes “a positive effect of watching eyes on pro-sociality in a situation”(PLoS One). People who litter seem to not care and still know that it is wrong. How is New York City one of the most littered city, if more people are watching them litter? They know that it’s wrong and should stop ruining their own
In the Rio Grande Valley littering is a big issue when it comes to animals and their habitats. Many individuals tend to throw trash on the streets and oceans when they go to beaches, for example South Padre Island. When people go on vacations, they always leave their trash on the sandy beaches and do not pick it up. This kind of action result in a bird confusing the plastic garbage for food and consuming it. Garbage is very dangerous for animals it can injure them and damage their digestive system which can sometimes result in death.
Cities, towns, streets, everything has plastic litter all about and this too has repercussions. Source F tells us that there is a multitude of litter and plastic bags are the most easily spread. Plastic bags are light so they can be blown all about and can get stuck on things such as streets and fences. Since plastic bags are so versatile in their spreading Source B tells us that they can often clog drainage systems causing floods later on. Causing problems for us as humans, a bigger reason why plastic bags should be removed or banned. Generally plastic lying all about can really make an area look horrendous. Source C reports a high amount of plastic items. With all this junk lying about it makes our cities and beaches look dirty and ragged. What better motivation to get of plastic when it hurts us as humans. Plastic bags cause way too much problems compared to their ability to aid
We need to also figure out a way to stop people from littering into our waterways. I was thinking maybe close off the passages along the street so adults and children don’t even have the opportunity to litter in these waterways.
The world would be a much better place if people who litter are nonexistent. As Captain Tidy and Neatness man go around Miami in outlandish costumes searching for trash in addition to people who do not dispose of it properly. The pair of men try to change the world and make it cleaner but it does nothing but make them look crazy and not taken seriously. Dave Barry’s short story “A Couple Of Really Neat Guys” is a low level comedy that uses Comic Characters and hyperbole to convey the idea that it is wrong to leave trash everywhere in the envirment a person lives.
Imagine yourself in the middle of a rainforest, listen to the sounds around you, smell the fresh air, hear the wildlife; take that image and get rid of the trees around you, the sounds of wildlife, and the smell of fresh air. Instead of a rainforest you are now in the middle of a seemingly endless sea of trash and waste. The fresh scent in the air gone, the sprawling land of greenery and trees gone, and the sounds of the forest is reduced to the sound of heavy machinery trying vainly to reduce trash into smaller more compact waste.
We always hear "do not litter!" or "throw your litter in the bins", maybe some of you bored to hear that yet we still do not throw it in the correct place. Litter is a serious habit problem to just throw away objects on the ground or leave them lying on the ground, instead of putting them in the garbage can. In Indonesia, the amount of litter is 175.000 ton/day and this is increasing every day. But we don't have to see that far, just look around us, our campus, Sanata Dharma University is still facing the littering problems. Each day, although there are various spots of bins and it is never full yet there are many litters lying in the floor, you can see the student hall as the evidence that even though it has 10 spots of bins, we still find people throwing their litter everywhere.
I am not a big earth first person but I do believe in recycling because I work at a local recycling center and I think recycling is a good thing. In fact I think everyone should recycle to make the earth a better place as a whole. A few good reasons why recycling is a good this is, the more people recycle, the less room is filled in landfills. Also, when people recycle they are reusing materials, therefore saving resources. Another good reason is that when you recycle often times you get paid back the C.R.V. that you already paid for in the grocery store.
Littering is like a cause and effect when its saw or done others will do the same. In the essay “A Couple Of Really Neat Guys” Dave Barry uses comedy to explain the point of not to litter. He uses hyperbole and one liners to explain his opinion on littering. Littering is something Dave Barry feels very strong for and does not appreciate. So, instead of starting a debate or argument he uses comedy to effectively show his point. Using hyperbole and one liners/puns to show his point that littering is bad and people should throw their trash away.
The definition of litter is trash that is left lying in an open or public place. Yet, why is it important not to litter? Littering pollutes the environment. As soon as a piece of trash touches the ground, it is considered litter. Since it doesn’t decompose, it doesn’t disappear until someone picks it up or it is washed into a body of water. While on land, innocent animals and children are at risk of picking up the litter, which may be life-threatening. Once litter is washed into a body of water, the marine life becomes threatened. Litter on land can easily be removed by someone picking it up; however, it isn’t removed from the water until a person cleanses the water of the antibody or it is absorbed somehow, such as by the animals.
Have you ever wonder what can you do about the bottles and cans you find around you? People that doesn?t care about the world being clean is littering the place. It makes things very difficult to put up for. Recycling cans and bottles can help save the earth form waste and trash buildup and can make new things. I think that recycling should be mandatory and there should be recycling cans in various locations at school and everywhere else.
Our world is getting to the point to where we will be surrounded by trash. There are hazards happening because of the excess trash, which could have been recycled. Although the government is not doing their best to make these hazards stop, surprisingly it is the non-governed organizations that are trying to make the difference. Proven studies and facts have been made about these issues, so people should take this into consideration and start recycling more. Recycling is a beneficial process that is not required globally like it should be because citizens are uneducated on the process and what it can do. People who are not recycling do not know the hazards they are causing everywhere.
What we should do about it is put a lot of trash cans by the ocean. Having all this trash in the ocean really is unnecessary. We could possible make a big net and tie it on a helicopter and pick up the trash like that. People can die by having all this trash in the ocean. I just don’t understand why people don’t care where there trash goes so they put it where ever they want. We can probably not allow any food or drink or bags get on the beach unless its items that people need. It’s just so hard to try to keep it clean because everyone doesn’t care about their trash. If anybody doesn’t pick up their trash, nobody is going to pick up their trash. People think because there’s trash flying around the beach that it’s ok for their trash to fly around also. If someone lets a plastic bag fly and hits a baby in the face what is that person going to do? It’s dangerous that trash is out there just like nothing. We as individuals can also stop it by telling our friends and family. If anyone sees trash by them they should take it out. Just don’t ...
Preserving the environment is very important. One way that would be possible is by recycling. Recycling is the recovery and reprocessing of waste materials for use in new products. There are important environmental and economic benefits connected with recycling. Common materials that are recycled consist of aluminum cans, glass, paper, wood, and plastic (“Recycling”). Cleveland, Ohio joined the ranks of requiring recycling and also fines the homeowners for not disposing of waste correctly or leaving cans out too early or too long (McElroy 1). Michele McCay says that recycling is one of the easiest, most tangible ways of taking action for the planet (par. 1). If that is the case, why is it not required in all states? Recycling should be mandatory because it saves natural resources, it conserves energy, and it reduces pollution.
People should know the negative impact throwing away a water bottle or newspaper, purchasing meat from the grocery store or consuming gasoline has on the environment, and many do not. By informing society about how their decisions affect the environment, we can help save our planet and change our attitude toward the land we live on, the water we drink and the air we breathe” and truly show respect for the stuff that we depend on. The United States produces “about 8.25 billion tons of solid waste each year” (Russell 1). People do not realize the impact they have on our planet and the environment. When people throw anything in the trashcan, they are contributing to the destruction of our planet.
...mproper way of disposing of waste and other materials. Littering not only impacts our environment but also many animals. Even though many people see littering being done they do not do anything to prevent this. One thing that may occur is that many of these wastes that are improperly disposed of finds its way to the ocean or other places. This is something that can be very dangerous for many aquatic creatures because they could think that it is food and this would cause them to choke on it and eventually die. A lot of people litter because they really have no idea of the damage that they are causing our environment. Another reason why people do this is because they are too lazy to dispose the materials into a proper trash can. Most of the litter that is being thrown on the ground eventually goes and finds its way into the sewers and goes into the oceans and lakes.
