Many people wonder how and when lacrosse was started. Maybe even why it was started. Lacrosse is a very complex sport and also very different from other sports. Lacrosse was made a very long time ago, which may be the reason why it is so different from other sports. Some people may not even know what lacrosse is. Lacrosse was made because it prepared young boys for war, it was a religious sport at the time, and also because it was entertaining to play and to watch. Lacrosse may have been one of the first sports. There a couple reasons why lacrosse was started and why it was made. “The very first time lacrosse was dated was around 1636” (Claydon, 1). “Lacrosse has changed a lot over the years what now has 20 players on the field at all time was once 100100,000 players in the game” (Claydon, 1). “Now lacrosse balls are dense rubber and very solid but how about playing with a solid wooden ball” (Claydon, 1). Now people can see why it was used to toughen up young boys. There was barely any rules to the sport of lacrosse too. “Now there are a lot of rules to make the game safer but back then, how about getting your skull cracked” (Vennum Jr, 6). “Most sports game last an hour now a days maybe a little longer but not …show more content…
much. Imagine playing a very fast pace sport such as lacrosse through the length of 7 days” (Claydon, 1). Maybe that’s why it toughened up young boys. Lacrosse was also a very religious sport for the Indian culture back then. They called it the creator's game. “As of now lacrosse is just a sport kids play for fun, but for the Indians around the 1600s it was more than just a sport they took it very seriously” (Vennum Jr, 6). “It was taken more seriously because originally they founded the sport” (Claydon, 1). This is why they took it more seriously. “ Now the Indians did not call the sport “Lacrosse” back then but a very different and obvious name for the sport Stick Ball” (Vennum Jr, 1). A lot has changed in this sport. “Probably the most important thing that has changed is sticks, the oldest stick that is still together dates back to somewhere around the 1900s” (Vennum Jr, 2). Even such the fields were different back then. “We play on fields such as turf or grass. Imagine playing through a forest or a village, Yes Indians did play through those types of places” (Claydon, 1). Shocking isnt it. Now for the most obvious one lacrosse was just played for fun.
Most people play the sport for the fun of it. But some have other reasons, like the reasons listed above. “As of now a days lacrosse isn't the most popular but it growing very very quickly” (Vennum Jr, 3). “People may think not a lot of people play but they estimated over half a million people” (Vennum Jr, 4). “With growing popularity and a lot of people playing lacrosse was named Canada's national sport” (Claydon, 2). “Lacrosse was so popular back then it was even put in the summer olympics for Canada” (Claydon, 3). “They were thinking what else could we do to make the popularity rise and then women were allowed to play in the 1800s” (Claydon, 2). There is one way to make it grow even
more. Lacrosse was made because it prepared young boys for war, it was a religious sport at the time, and also because it was entertaining to play and to watch. There is just some of the things that happened in the history of lacrosse. In conclusion lacrosse is on the rise in popularity and it has changed a lot. Will it grow in popularity even more and maybe even change more. We will find out one day.
Lacrosse has progressed over the years from when it started as a religious practice by the Native Americans to the Canadians to the east coast to all around the world. The equipment, shoes, rules, and fields have changed in many different ways. The different ways that people can set up their defense and their offense is so broad that it is hard to describe. The original team set up was when the Indians played over expanses of 500 yard up to a mile. Then William George Beers created a club called the Montreal Lacrosse Club in eighteen fifty-six. Then about a decade later William George Beers produced a whole set of rules that included reducing the number of players to ten adding hitting penalties while also introducing a rubber ball and a new innovative plastic design for the lacrosse stick.
Helmet or no helmet? This controversial issue for girls lacrosse has been growing stronger each year. If you have ever seen men's lacrosse their uniforms are almost identical to a football player. While women only wear goggles and a mouth guard. So why why is this such a controversial issue? Shouldn’t women want to wear helmets for protection? There is a lot of evidence to review on the topic. In the articles titled, “A Case Against Helmets in Lacrosse.” by Alan Schwarz, the non-fiction piece titled “Headgear Rule for Girls” by Bill Pennington, another article named, “Helmets In Lacrosse” by Krystina Lucid, and “How Women's Field Lacrosse Differs from Men's Field Lacrosse” by James Hinkson and Joe Lombardi. Girls lacrosse should not wear more head gear/ a helmet because if they are protected they feel they can play a more aggressive game, the rules in girls lacrosse do not allow any
The MLL stands for Major League Lacrosse. It’s what follows after college, same as the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. The difference between the MLL and those big professional sports is that MLL players average salary is between $10,000 and $30,000 (Forbes). The other salaries all are over one million dollars for the average (Forbes/Wikipeida). People of course will be more familiar with basketball, baseball, or football. Lacrosse though, should be praised as much as those sports. That’s because MLL players don’t practice as much as the other sports but still compete at a very high skill level, the players have a burning passion for the sport, and the players have to be able to create chemistry with their players in one practice.
Thomas Raddall, a Canadian historical analyst, once said, “When the soldiers were transferred to military posts along the Saint Lawrence and Great Lakes, they took the game with them; and for some time afterwards continued to send to Dartmouth Indians for the necessary sticks.” This quote goes to show that the game’s reputation took off, even during undesirable times such as during a war. Up to this point in time, the sport was primarily played by masculine males and not women. Skip ahead 75 years from the birth of the sport, in 1875 James Creighton, a native Canadian, devised the modern rules of the game. He strategically thought of all possibilities the game could ensue, and devised a set of rules in Montreal. A group of nine players, including Creighton, tried out his guidelines at the Victoria Skating Rink located at McGill University. They all agreed upon the fairness and rationality of the principles he set forth for the game. Instead of using a ball like they formerly did, they switched the ball out for a wooden puck; similar to today’s rubber puck. As the game’s organization progressed, seven years later, the first club ice hockey team was formed: McGill University Hockey Club. By 1880, there were enough club teams to start a tournament division that each team played against one
Every time I play lacrosse I feel like I am a part of something greater than myself. Being a part of something greater than myself, being changed in my life forever has made me think and feel whenever I play lacrosse. When I was younger playing lacrosse was a learning experience. Playing with more skilled or less skilled girls in lacrosse and playing different positions except for one every game, practice and scrimmage all the time makes me get a different perspective. Playing lacrosse for quick sticks has changed my life forever.
The Europeans wanted to spread this sport, and was successful doing so. As soon as they played their first documented games, other teams also joined in and quickly became an official sport. The popularity of lacrosse rose in The Americas as soon as the Caughnawaga Indians demonstrated a game in Montreal, Canada. This was reported in a newspaper, and white men became interested. In 1876, quickly after the first set of playing rules were announced, New York University became the first team to be established in the US. During the spread of lacrosse, Queen Victoria gave recognition to the game when she endorsed a match being played in England. A popular figure being involved in this sport had a big impact on the future of lacrosse. 1904 was an important year in lacrosse history. For the first time, the sport became an actual event played in the Olympics which Canada had won the gold medal. As the next few years passed, the Unites would have won the next gold medals, but the glory moments of lacrosse quickly came to an end in 1908. It’s not completely clear as to why the sport was excluded, but research has shown that around this time, the global interests have changed and lacrosse seemed to be going out of style. As this was a disappointment to lacrosse history, it did not stop the sport from achieving much more. The still got to be a part of the world games and was involved in the World Cup. Men have always dominated in sports, while women weren’t necessarily recognized for their skills even though they do just as well. 1931, was their year. Women's lax was now recognized as a sport, rather than just a hobby. Many more teams were organized, and they participated in nearly the same activities as the men did. Equality of the sexes has always been an issue, Men has always been more dominant, so it is important to give credit to women for getting as much attention as they should. Today, it is still not exactly equal. The rules for men are way more
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
Do you want to learn about one of the most amazing sports in the world? Lacrosse is considered to be the first sport in America. Evin Demirel an editor for The Daily Beast insists lacrosse was the first sport to be played because “it was first played by Native Americans around a millennium ago” (paragraph 10). Lacrosse was the most widespread sport in America because so many Native American villages played the sport together. Lacrosse got its name from the French. They named it Lacrosse which means the game of the stick. Lacrosse is the oldest and hardest sport still being played today.
Spring is a great time to get started in Lacrosse. It is a sport that is rapidly growing through the U.S., mainly in the east, but catching on everywhere. It is much different than anything you have seen with a combination of hockey, football, and soccer. You’ve got to try this one-of -a-kind sport, but first you must know the basics, checking, history and the continuous rules and penalties.
Lacrosse is the oldest team sport in North America, having been played by Native American tribes long before any European had even set foot on the continent. A century after European missionaries discovered the game played by Native Americans, they began to play it themselves, starting in the 18th century. From there, it evolved and grew in popularity from a very savage game that resembled war, into what it is today, a recreational sport played widely in America and other countries. As U.S. Lacrosse literature aptly puts it, “Lacrosse is a game born of the North American Indian, christened by the French, adopted and raised by the Canadians, and later dominated by the Americans.” When the first people of America started playing lacrosse centuries ago, the game served many purposes.
In 1994, the Canadian Federal government compromised and voted to make hockey Canada’s National Winter Sport and lacrosse Canada’s National Summer Sport. Which Sport should be named Canada’s true national sport? Hockey is in the blood of all Canadians. Millions can vividly remember the first time they put on a pair of skates and stepped onto the ice. Providing nation-wide entertainment, Canadians are overcome by emotional realization that “Canada is hockey.”- Mike Weir. Generations of Canadians were brought up listening to Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday evening on the radio. It is more than just a sport in Canada, it defines the culture. Look no further than the five-dollar bill. One will observe a group of children playing a game of hockey on a frozen pond. The sport is part of Canada’s national identity.
Hockey is a very quick game. Probably the fastest game out there. The speed really helps with entertainment. Watching the players go back and forth, scoring chances everywhere. The watchers blood pumping quick and hardly any stoppages in the game. It is they only sport that actually allows fighting to occur. This entertains and gives pride to the fans when their teams player wins. As said before, any quality of other sports can be found in Hockey, In this case it was Boxing.
The Haudenosaunee created lacrosse many centuries ago. Alfred Jacques is a lacrosse stick maker from the Onondaga Nation. According the Jacques, lacrosse is viewed as a man’s game in Haudenosaunee society. They believe that the Creator gave them the game of lacrosse. Because of this, they take lacrosse very seriously since not playing hard is dishonorable to the Creator. The Haudenosaunee play games within their communities. These games are played the same way that lacrosse was traditionally played. The game is played on an open field without any out of bounds and without pads. They game is also played without any stoppage of play. Usually, the teams are split up by age with the younger men facing the older men. Moreover, the creation of the sticks holds a special place with the Haudenosaunee. For Alfred Jacques, it takes about ten months to make a stick. First, he hand carves the stick out of a tree and steams the wood. After two months of drying, he begins to bend the head of the stick. After six more months of drying, the head of the stick is bent further. Now that the stick has its shape, he trims the stick down to the right thickness. Afterwards, he drills the holes in the head for the netting and sand the stick down. Lastly, he shellacs the stick and put on the netting. Alfred Jacques showed the ways in which sticks have changed
Soccer and lacrosse are obviously two different sports , but in a way they are both very similar to each other. Similarly, they both use a ball for their main part of the game. They use the ball to bring it down the field and a try to score on the opposing team. Another similarity is that they both have goalkeepers to help protect the ball from not going in on the team's side. They both stand in their goal box and they are able to bring it down field if they want. In addition, they use nets on the back of the goalkeepers with bars that show how big the goal is and so the ball doesn't fly out of the field when the team scores.Another example of a similarity between soccer and lacrosse is that they both involve a lot of running. For both sports midfield is the position where you have to run
When athletes are training for their sport, they usually have a goal in mind. A common goal among athletes is being able to represent Canada in the highest way possible; by competing in the Olympics. The Olympics is the biggest stage for an athlete to compete on, and it is a great honor and privilege to be there. Curling is a winter Olympic sport that many people watch. Watching our Canadian athletes battle for an Olympic medal creates a bond with Canadian citizens across the country. Lacrosse is not an Olympic sport so it does not have the same effect on people. It does not bring people closer together because we cannot watch and cheer for our athletes as a whole country. Curling brings Canadians
