Elementary School Students should not have the responsibility of homework Today I will be arguing whether or not young school kids should or should not have homework. Personally I think they should not. These kids are so young and the last thing they should be worrying about is homework, instead they should be outside with friends, getting dirty and having fun! A quote from Monica Pellarin says, “I say give the kids a break… Let them enjoy life before life gets too tough.” I love this because it’s the truth. Life will be so tough in the future so just give them a break and let them have fun! I want to start out talking about stress. Elementary students should not be stressed out at such a young age, especially over homework. This is a statement from a group of experts at the University of Pittsburgh saying, “Early exposure to violence and stress not only can affect children's mental and social development during their formative years, it also can increase the risk of alcoholism, illicit drug use, adult depression, anxiety and even heart disease much later in life, according to a leading specialist on stress and resilience.” I totally believe this. It will help you with confidence and being able to hold a conversation with somebody. It is so true and when it says the children begin to establish a sense of self, I like that part because I think it’s important to discover who you really are. This is a good reason why homework should not be in elementary schools. Last I would like to talk about how homework takes away family time.

I know that the kids do not want homework. I am against homework for these young kids mainly because of their age and what it can lead to in the future. They have a long life ahead of them and they will stress later in life, but in their young lives now they should be with their family and doing stuff with them. It is so unhealthy for young people to have no interaction and not being able to hold conversations. The brain will not develop correctly if the kids do not have interaction with one another. After studying the issue of homework, and the teacher’s influence upon it, I’ve come to realize homework may be overused in today’s educational system. I feel teachers are depending too much on outside education and not enough on in-class learning. Also, I believe the United States Government needs to develop a "homework standard". Educators in general need to come together and encourage students to learn in the classroom, and spend less time out of school doing countless hours of busy work. Teachers must look at the best interests of the students and base learning on communication in the classroom.
Some people would argue that homework should not stay in schools because it decreases the amount of family time. They say that when a child is doing homework, it decreases family time because that child is not involved in the family but the homework (“Teachers…”). This theory has been proven wrong; in fact homework actually increases family time. Family time increases by the encounter the parents and children have while doing homework. It brings them together by how the children ask for help on their homework (5). The child will ask their parent or siblings to help them, and that will spark the family time. The parents will try to help and will not stop till their child understand how to do it. While helping with their child’s homework the parents can ask how their day went, and how that certain class was. Engaging in conversation always increases family time. Not only will they get to talk to their children, the parents will be informed of their child’s studies and how good or bad they are doing in school. Which proves that homework increases family time.
Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. As experts continue adding additional facts about homework, it is clear that homework can help students in different ways.
Although the living conditions of children are getting lot better than when we were kids, the children study more time than we did. The pupils have to get up at earlier than 7 o 'clock to make sure they won’t be late for school. Not only have that, these pupils still had to participate in various after school program, and a lot of variety of training during the weekends. The most pressure is homework. Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Then the student doesn’t get a lot of sleep which can lead them to being late the next morning for school. Also while a student is doing homework everyone else is out playing fun games.
