Banning The Great Gatsby
Have you ever been banned from someplace? Did you think it was necessary for you to be banned? Probably not. In the past, many books have been banned for a great deal of reasons. Many of those reasons being a big deal in the past than they would be in modern times like now. The Great Gatsby was one of many books among the banned ones. The Great Gatsby was challenged at the Baptist College in Charleston, South Carolina due to the fact that there were language concerns and sexual references in the book (Lombardi 1). Personally, I do not think The Great Gatsby should have been banned or challenged because those are the elements that made the Jazz Age what it was. He was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. His parents were Francis Scott Key and Mary McQuillan. You may or may not have heard of Francis Scott Key because he was the one who wrote the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner” (bio.com 1). Mary McQuillan was born in an Irish family who made a living as grocers. Fitzgerald was a very ambitious boy and was the pride of his parents, especially his mother. When Fitzgerald was 15, he was sent to a catholic school which was located in New Jersey. It was there that he discovered his undying passion for writing. One of his teca Fitzgerald sought a change of scenery and environment so that his mind would be able to run wild with creativity. He then moved to Valescure, France and wrote what would then be credited as his greatest novel, The Great Gatsby (bio.com 3). Many people used to be closed-minded and did not accept the book for the true beauty that it was because of the sexual references and language that Fitzgerald incorporated. If anything, I think both of those factors molded the whole book to its full potential. If I could describe The Great Gatsby
