Many people think that space exploration is not worth the cost. However, it is worth the cost, without space exploration, the Dawn mission would not be possible. The Dawn mission is a satellite that it currently in orbit and is trying to discover how our solar system was formed. Now we have satellites in the orbit of Earth that can tell us what the weather is going to be like and when natural disasters are going to happen. We also have satellites that create Global Positioning Systems and to create service for cell phones. Even though these are two good reasons why space exploration is worth the cost, some people think otherwise.
Some people think that space exploration is not worth the risks and cost. A lot of people think that we can just send robots and rovers into space. The problem with this is we won’t be able to tell the effects gravity has on humans. Robots can not show feelings so it would be hard to tell what gravity does to the robot. Also, most people think that it is a drain of the economy. In reality, it actually draws in more money than it spends. The total budget is just a tiny fraction of the total $13 trillion total G.P.D.
Helping scientists see the effect of human development in 0 gravity and having access to tools to help gain mineral resources is just two reasons that exploration is worth the cost. The loads of money being put towards space exploration needs to come to a cessation; however, there’s no sign of this happening soon.
This was no easy task considering no one knew exactly the effects of zero gravity and complete vacuum on the human body and there was no precedent information in regards of this field. When considering this topic, one might ask themselves why explore space? We explore space to compare other planets with the earth and to study the sun, to explore the universe while finding if intelligent life exists, for satellites to improve communications, weather forecasting, navigation, resource monitoring, and “to create a focal point for a new intellectual renaissance” (Ruzic).
Since the beginning of time, mankind has sought after learning about and exploring the universe. This yearning drove us to achieve such great things as the journey to the moon and the discovery of water on Mars. Nowadays, several people argue as to whether or not space exploration is worth the effort. I believe that it is humanity’s instinctual nature to pursue a better understanding of ourselves, and our universe. Further understanding of our universe will lead to the discovery of new technologies and ways to secure humanity’s survivability.
It has always been a part of human nature for a man or woman to be curious of their surroundings. First it was what is beyond those mountains; then what is beyond that ocean, then the sky, under the sea, and in the 50s, 60s, and 70s it was space and the moon. Our ancestors and the early civilizations were strongly focused on explorations and expansion. Even notable historical figures were primarily focused to either expand their empire for increased power and fame like Julius Caesar, or to explore new lands for rich booty or possible colonization like Eric the Red. We are doing nothing out of the ordinary by wanting to explore the vast expanse of space first hand. We are curious what is out there. Is there life? Is there a world out there that can sustain human life? As curious beings, we must at least try to answer these questions. If not for man taking personal initiative to answer the question left before him, we would not have a Columbus or Lewis and Clark. Manned space flights instead of robotic crews bring this human element of curiosity to the table.
Also, the 3 quotes I presented in the data section seemed to be all pro-space exploration as well. From my interpretation of these three sources and the various other sources I looked into, space exploration appears highly beneficial to us as humans and our understanding of Earth science and science as a whole. Space exploration satisfies the human desire to learn and “Uncover new knowledge” as Wiles states. It’s never bad to learn something new, and in the end us making exciting new discoveries as a result of space exploration might just lead to “…breakthroughs that we can’t currently imagine.”. This correlates to how new technological innovations have occurred as a result of human space exploration, leading to such inventions like the GPS and digital cameras. “The challenges to achieving ambitious exploration goals are driven largely by the need to enable reliable, safe and sustained operations of crew and machines in the harsh environment of space. These challenges require solutions that will provide benefits on Earth even before being employed in orbit” (I.S.E.C.G. 2013). Lastly, I want to discuss the possibility of resources. Our technological innovations will lead us to become more efficient at find resources and will cause less of a disruptive aftermath. In return, these resources will benefit us while causing little impact our environment! As you can see, all the points I discussed correlate to the first point, which was our quest to gain more knowledge. In our journey, we’ve only been helping humanity by providing more information to our scientific communities along with developing new technology and finding a means to achieve alternate ways of collecting resources, but with every great thing comes a few setbacks. Mankind has always been fascinated with exploring the unknown. From sailing to distant lands to someday setting foot on other planets, the spirit of exploration is the same. Bur now with the current economic situation and the high cost of sending people to space, NASA is being looked at as a way to free up some much needed funds. Although, there is many problems here on planet Earth that need addressing, the benefits of space exploration far out weight the disadvantages. Space exploration has given us more advanced technology, advances in the medical field, and a boost to the economy and these facts cannot be disputed.
Many answers can come from exploring space. Getting a “few lumps of moon rock” can answer so many questions we asked ourselves for millennia. Can we truly belong in a place we do not know about? Most people think that the costly downside to funding space exploration is a reason to avoid spending money on sciences and instead spend it on problems here on earth, but such funding for space exploration actually promotes economical as well as scientific benefits. Some may think exploring outer space is simply a human’s curiosity. We have benefitted our world by using satellite technology to preform tasks and provide a range of innovated services. The main applications of satellites are in the fields of communication, Earth Remote Sensing, weather, and scientific research. In some ways the use of satellites has made our world smaller. Satellites make it possible to establish a connection between two people that are on opposite ends of the globe via a telephone call or the use of the internet. Each of these satellites have many parts, but two parts are common to all satellites are called the payload and the bus.
