Plagiarism is defined as stealing someone else's work without giving him or her credit for it. In other words, Plagiarism is the submission of written material by a particular author but represented by a student, whether the material is paraphrased or copied. Plagiarism in my opinion is immoral and unethical because it takes away the learning experience that someone can gain through each assignment. That is because it degrades you as a learner and harm's you in a way, in as far as your education and career are concerned. It is the dream of lazy students who want to plagiarize on every assignment, and it is terrifying to students who put their time and effort in their work. After previously attempting this error, I am confident that it will never happen again in any of my course work as it reflects unethical behavior and may constitute a ruthless career path. Furthermore, I am of the opinion that plagiarism occurs from poor teaching, which causes students to lack confidence and knowledge in their frame of work. do. In previous classes, I have had trouble citing sources the right way and part of this may lead to plagiarism. Citing sources appropriately is crucial in any work assignment because it allows credibility to be given to the author. Failure to do that will certainly lead to plagiarism; that is why we as student must utilize all the available resources that we can get from our instructors and even ask questions if needed. Most students, including myself will do a research and most of the work but fail to leave footnotes and quotation marks. I have also learned from experience that procrastination is probably the leading factor for why students might plagiarize and recycle their papers. Although life is faced with many challenges and obstacles, it is our duty as students to seek full responsibilities for our actions. Additionally, we need to learn from the consequences so that we do not repeat the following actions in the future. I only became aware of the citation process recently.
In the entire period that I was at the community college, I was bewildered by the fact that only direct quotations needed citation. I was not aware that paraphrasing text from an author also needed referencing. I think most students including myself face the same problems because certain types of sources are somewhat excused despite explicit instructions to the contrary. This particular notion is misleading and reflects on fundamental misunderstanding of the logic of proper citing. It is to my understanding that when sources are directly quoted word for word; there should be quotation marks of the passage quoted and referenced accordingly in parenthesis. plagiarism. English 3003, "Discursive writing" is probably one of the most challenging English courses I have ever encountered throughout my education. Not only because of its advanced level, but also the fact that every assignment and essay requires a lot of time and effort. Another significant element that I almost forgot to mention is the "syllabus", which requires attention nearly every time an assignment is being done. Failing to study the syllabus thoroughly may result in plagiarism, and I have to admit that it is one of the most repulsive and hideous mistakes I have done in college. For example in the syllabus, it clearly states that, when recycling papers the students need to confirm with the instructor before turning in submitted papers in the past. However, I failed to do so; hence, I am faced with consequences and a life learning experience. I have learned that dedicating time and effort to learning and applying good academics at the beginning of your university career is the best way of avoiding plagiarism. Revising all necessary tools such as the syllabus and referencing system will prevent plagiarism and recycling of papers from happening. Plagiarism is not a matter of just correcting quotation marks or referencing appropriately, but it's also about deploying your academic skills so that you may have the confidence to be creative in your ideas and thoughts. I am happy because I had the chance of expanding my thoughts on this particular issue because it has taught me the lessons and consequences of plagiarizing and recycling papers.
The article Cybercheats clearly shows the cause/use of plagiarism. Students of all ethnic backgrounds use plagiarism. However it also shows how most schools are trying to crack down. Two employees from National Institutes of Health actually have a program that can decode essays that may have some sort of plagiarism. It is clearly obvious that the students who do indeed use this from of cheating have no real values. As Michael Miller, a teacher at Georgetown University, says, "It's really up to the individual reader to do with the information what they will, good or evil. I belong to a school that says teach people to do the right thing and then turn'em loose." It seems that if you are adult enough to actually attend collage then you are adult enough to handle the pressures and responsibilities that come along with it. For most cases the use of plagiarism is clearly used by students who don't know the value/capabilities of there own. They also aren't usually aware of the consequences.
Descriptions are made as to what defines plagiarism and ways to avoid plagiarism. “To plagiarize is to take work that is not your own and submit it as your own, without giving credit to the person who created it.” Some suggestions to avoid plagiarism are to keep your notes organized, and to cite whenever you use someone else’s ideas. It is also suggested to summarize, paraphrase or quote your sources. It is not considered your writing if you connect multiple quotes without adding your own ideas or thoughts. The only time you don’t have to cite is when the information you are talking about is common knowledge, or it is about your own life.
In the case where one needs to use the exact definition as stated in an existing material, it should be quoted and credited to the first person to define it in that manner. Giving a summary of detailed facts also helps to avoid similarities with other works (Shafer, 2014). Paraphrasing and summarizing other people’s ideas are not enough to make work free of plagiarism. If the style is similar with another author’s work, it is not considered not original. Everyone has a unique style of writing, and to make a work original, it is necessary for one to employ their unique style (Watkins, 2008). When writing, one should avoid too many direct quotations because they will make the work look similar to the original version (Suseela, 2016). To paraphrase effectively, a writer should read existing material and understand it fully. In the event they want to borrow ideas, they should keep the material out of sight and write as own composition. However, when making direct quotations one is allowed to copy and paste so as to maintain the originality of the
All in all, plagiarism is bad and ethics are changed for the worse in the world today. It is time for the world to look at itself and see where its ethics are and if they are right or wrong. Change needs to be made and people need to reevaluate their ethics. If a change in ethics are made, then the world will become a better place.
The impact of plagiarism can be a self-destructive for a student. On the other hand, plagiarism may cause an instructor to feel betrayed and disrespected by a student.
In my own view, failure to acknowledge or recognize the author of the original work is a dishonorable practice. Students who plagiarize published work are seen to be too lazy to do their own research work and properly grasp the concepts they are researching. Others are used to waiting till the last hour to start their work, increasing the chances of copying information. Most students perceive reading and research as a waste of time and consider some new information to be extremely difficult to understand (Heath 5). Teachers and lecturers who entertain plagiarism produce students with outstanding grades but very poor knowledge and understanding in their field of study (Bhanot, Fallows 173). Plagiarism normally makes an individual loose reliability and integrity in the eyes of the administration, hence getting leadership positions or institutional scholarships are out of the question.
Students that copy other student's work are hurting themselves in the long run. Their creativity level drops every time they copy or have someone else do their work. After a while of copying and forging, the student's ability to think creatively and successfully becomes next to nothing. "Educators must continue to socialize students of all ages about the importance of maintaining high ethical standards," (Glazer 222). The educational system is where students learn these tricks and proceed to carry them on into there professional careers. Corners are too easy to cut these days, and in order for people to keep their minds as functional as possible, they need to do their own work. It is too easy for students to buy a students paper that had the same class the quarter before, reword it a little, and turn it in as their own. Students are no longer able to write a fictional story by themselves because the computer or someone else can do it for them.
As students of high school and college, and even in the professional world, we are asked to research and write on subjects that are seen to be important. The research that we are asked to do, has been done many times in the past, which means people are bound to use others’ ideas and words with no recognition, sometimes without even knowing it. This leads to plagiarism, which is something many people have heard of, but never learned the true definition and the harm it can create. Schools and society need to be more proactive in explaining what plagiarism is, how to write correctly in order to prevent it, and teach the consequences plagiarism has.

The people who plagiarize intentionally are people who don’t really care about their future and career. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
