Recently many researchers have shown that plagiarism and cheating have become more common these past few years. Plagiarism is when you take credit for someone else’s work. Many famous singers have been caught taking someone else’s song lyrics or the same sounds and claiming that they created the song. Another form of plagiarism is when you are assigned a paper in class and instead of actually doing the work you look up the answers on a website and copy it down without citing it. Some of the pleanties if you are caught cheating or plagiarizing include failing the test, exam, or quiz that is being taken. Failing the course or the entire class. Also depending on the test or exam such as the ACT you could get suspended for cheating. Some of the
reasons why plagiarism and cheating is wrong is because it can show lack of care. It can come across that you did not want to take the time to research and write the assignment so you just copied someone else. It can show disrespect to the author of what was plagiarized. Also when you plagiarize you are committing a fraud. Plagiarizing and cheating on tests and assignments is very wrong and should not be done. It is always important to try your hardest no matter what. You will always come out with smarter knowledge on the topic you are researching when you actually write the paper instead of plagiarizing.
Plagiarism means to steal or borrow someone’s original ideas without their consent and labelling them your own. It can be done in different ways and has been labelled a serious offense in the contemporary world. Deriving ideas from an existing source in one’s work without citation of the work is a form of plagiarism. For students it is easy to go to the internet and “simply insert phrases directly into reports” (Source D). Might seem convenient at the moment, but it would not be when they get expelled or suspended because of their actions. Just by making a student sign “a pledge of honor for each piece of paper submitted” (Source B) does not guarantee the student will stay true to that pledge. As stated by Heidi Smithson the two main reasons people plagiarize is because they don’t feel comfortable with their writing skills and they decide that they cannot do it and end up plagiarizing. Many of these people have either not had enough time to develop their writing skills, or they have come from other countries where there are different rules to writing that are have different definition of the word plagiarizing. The other reason Smithson gives is that most people and especially students plagiarize because they do not manage their time efficiently and they leave it to the last minute. If people are caught plagiarizing there are many consequences that they can face. Smithson’s paper says that if you are caught plagiarizing at school on an assignment then you could get a minor punishment as getting zero on the assignment up to getting expelled from the institution. What is plagiarism? Obviously the word must be of some importance as I know it can greatly change ones future. From what I know, plagiarism can happen by careless mistakes, being uneducated of what plagiarism really means or just on purpose to save time for themselves. Some writers may not know the actual detail of how you give another writer full credit of their work. Many students are using technology to cheat because they are able to find answers quickly online by just searching for them. Cheating is increasing in the United States at higher rates because many of the students in high school or in college have to deal with different responsibilities, pressure, and loads of different types of work. Richard Perez Peña states in “Studies Find More Students Cheating,” “Internet access has made cheating easier, enabling students to connect instantly with answers, friends to consult and works to plagiarize.” Plagiarism, which means using a work of someone else as if it were yours, is the most common form of cheating in high school and in college. Plagiarism occurs by not citing a source correctly or by not putting the proper quotation marks on a quote that you borrow to state your point. The expansion of the World Wide Web and the number of people accessing the Web on a regular basis has caused an epidemic of plagiarism in this country, especially among students. This is a serious problem that must be addressed because many students feel that if they are not getting in trouble for cheating, than it is okay.

Whereas , Sunday (2000) stated that the behaviors such as plagiarism, getting answer to an exam from someone who has already taken it, and collaborating with work when individual work was specified was among the highest cheating rates. McCabe (1992) found that the most common practices include: failure to foot note, copying from others, padding a bibliography, and assisting others in cheating. Baird (1980) Indicated that obtaining test scores ahead of time, copying from others, allowing others to copy, and plagiarism are the most common forms of cheating. And Levy (2007) reported that more than 44% of students copy information from the internet without properly citing it.
Plagiarizing is also a form of cheating. Plagiarizing is taking credit for work that you did not write. It is a serious problem and anyone caught doing it should be punished. However, some kids aren’t even aware they are doing it and should therefore not be punished. Kids and teens might not pay the best attention in language arts and not know how to cite correctly.
Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
What exactly is plagiarism? Plagiarism is the act of stealing another person's words or writing and not properly citing the quotes or paraphrase. Plagiarism can happen without realizing what you have done. According to the website Plagiarism.com, "One out of three high school students admitted that they used the Internet to plagiarize an assignment"(Plagiarism) which is an extremely high number. There are ways around plagiarizing with the most important way is to always cite quotations and borrowed material. Another form of copying is "Copyright Infringement" which is defined by the website copyright.gov as being the copying or use of copyrighted material without consent from the copyright owner.(Copyright¬) Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement both deal with taking something that isn't yours without permission and using it as your own, but they also are pretty different from one another. Plagiarism is centralized around taking a sentence or how paper of someone's and calling it yours while Copyright infringement is centralized around using a piece of work that has been copyrighted such as someone using the Disney logo on a shirt and selling them without permission from the Disney Corporation. Committing either of these can make you end up in some serious trouble whether it be with your school or a big corporation.
