Maya Angelou was a poet and a civil rights activist, born on April 4th 1928, in St. Louis, MO. Growing up she didn’t have the easiest childhood. Her parents split up when she was three and she was sent to live with her grandmother in Arkansas. She experienced traumatic events as a child. At the age of seven she was sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend. Due to these transpiring events her uncle killed the boyfriend. After this occurred she stopped talking, she spent many years mute. She was the first black female cable car conductor. After giving birth to her son she worked various jobs to support herself and her son. I personally chose Maya Angelou because to me she was a huge inspiration to a lot of people. She had all the qualities of a leader. During the Civil Rights Movement, she served on the Southern Christian Leadership Conference alongside Martin Luther King Jr. She was a part of allowing schools to be mixed racially, allowed different races to eat in the same restaurants, and even use the same restrooms. She did so much with her life, even with all the stuff that happened to her during her childhood. The qualities that I believe she had would lean towards bravery, humbleness, and she had great morals. In Stamps she was faced with the brutality of racial discrimination, and a very traumatic incident where she, she was raped by her mother's boyfriend when she was eight, but because of this she also developed an unshakable faith and values of traditional African-American family. Where she began to sing and dance and planned to audition in professional theater but that didn’t work out well because she began working as a nightclub waitress, tangled with drugs and prostitution and danced in a strip club. In 1959, she moved to New York, became friends with prominent Harlem writers, and got involved with the civil rights movement. In 1961, she moved to Egypt with a boyfriend and edited for the Arab Observer. When she returned to the U.S., she began publishing her multivolume autobiography, starting with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings as well as several books of poetry and the third being Still I Rise in published in 1978. At this time, many young girls like Maya Angelou grew up wishing they were a white woman with blond hair and blue eyes. That was just the start of Angelou's problems though. In the autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou goes into great depth about her tragic childhood, from moving around to different houses, and running away and having a child at the age of 16. Which Angelou served as a Northern Coordinator for two years (Hagan). She left the SCLC in 1960 and she moved to Egypt with her husband Tosh Angelo so she could be an associate editor of the Arab Observer. Soon after moving to Egypt, Angelou’s marriage dissolved. She later moved to Ghana to be a lecturer at the University of Ghana (Hagan). When the March on Washington in 1963 took place, although Angelou was still hundreds of thousands of miles away, she still marched in solidarity. After her marriage with Tosh Angelo’s ended, Angelou won a scholarship to study dance with Pearl Purple Onion, wrote and produced screenplays, and published her first book in 1970, which jumpstarted her career of book writing and poetry (Hagan). Maya Angelou had a long, busy and distinguished career. Angelou published a total of seven autobiographies, three books and several books of poetry (Hagan). Most of which are very well known, a few have some form of nomination for awards and all of her writings have some humor in it, as Angelou believed that everyone needs a good laugh.
