Some would say independence is a blessing. However, in some cases, independence can become a curse if you let it. I learned this myself through my own challenging experiences. At only fifteen years old I entered a world of freedom and independence I had not yet encountered; I went to Germany for a year as an exchange student. During that time I had to adapt to new-found freedoms and conquer the hardships that come with living in a foreign country. Navigating obstacles throughout my exchange year independently drove me to become more confident in myself, and taught me how essential perseverance is in life, while also helping me to better understand and appreciate other cultures. As expected, a foreign country has a lot to teach. I left America as a high strung, …show more content…
I had to relearn and apply a profusion of confidence to things that we normally do not need to, such as: raising my hand in my courses, traveling, and simply speaking to people. In similar fashion, making friends took a great amount of confidence that I originally had not prepared myself for. I had to overcome my shy nature and build up the courage to talk to others. Furthermore, during the year, I had to learn how to persevere through difficult and demanding times on my own. For example, I had to continue to be positive despite being lonely, homesick, and frustrated, and continue toward a goal: to fully integrate into German society. This included issues such as solving problems with my host family all on my own. There were times where it seemed as if my life was like a movie where everything went wrong; however, like most movies, I knew there would be a happy ending and I had to keep moving toward it. Another lesson I learned, but certainly not the last one Germany can teach, is a deeper understanding of the world and its culture. Integrating into a foreign country gave me a new appreciation of German culture as well as other cultures as I experienced how
Throughout The Martian Chronicles, being an individual that does or acts unexpectedly can be an eye-opening change. Even though becoming independent can have negative effects like death or loneliness, the change is worth it in Gripp, Spender, and the Martian’s situations. Being independent in today’s society can lead to many discoveries as well. Scientists and artists find comfort when they work alone, for example Albert Einstein or Claude Monet. Being an independent thinker can liberate your intelligence and creativity; for example, philosophers like Buddhist monks who find peace when they minimize their contact with other beings. Being an independent person can create realizations that will make you a better human being. Being an independent individual can lead to a more interesting and enthusiastic life.
In the novel, The Awakening, Edna Pontellier, the main character, is married to a Creole named Leonce with whom she lives in New Orleans. As the novel opens, they are vacationing in Grand Isle with many other rich couples. Edna is not originally from the Creole lifestyle, so she is not immediately comfortable with being open. However, she starts talking to Adele, another Creole wife, who starts to show her how to open up. As they talk more, Robert, a very young, good-looking attendant, shows up and begins to take a fancy to Edna. While they are at Grand Isle, Edna seems to find herself. Once they leave, Edna starts to become more independent. We begin to see these types of independent women at the turn of the twentieth century. Throughout the novel, we see Edna turn from a dependent woman and housewife, such as Adele, to the powerful and independent woman of the twentieth century.
Every July 4, Americans celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but do we really understand why it was written in the first place? The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 is by far one of the most important historical documents for the United States of America (Stockdale, 2016). In Jefferson 's words, the Declaration was written, "In order to place before mankind the common sense of the matter in terms as plain and simple as to command their assent." The authors of this document addressed the philosophy of natural rights, compiled a lengthy list of grievances towards the King, and let England know that the American Colonists were about to declare themselves an independent nation. They wanted their intentions to be very clear for King George III.
Self-reliance is your chance to take the bridles of our life and lead from the front. Yes, scary at first, taking over the controls of our life gives us real opportunities to expand our limits, and to explore the life we live. To give us the opportunity to discover more about our life and ourselves than if we are led through life by circumstance or others. Being self-reliant gives us a lot of freedom. This gives us the opportunity to open our eyes to new possibilities, to new prospects, and to new options. This is a great chance to giv...
Since I still wanted to make friends, I desperately continued to try to break down the barrier between my peers and I and I slowly began to succeed. As I began making more and more friends, my experience in the U.S. started to become a happier one. Although there were still many things about American culture that I did not understand, I chose to face my fears head on which lead to a more content life. I realized that no matter where you are from, what obstacles you had to face, or what social class you belong to, coming to America gives you an opportunity to build a new and better life for you and your family. The journey to learn this lesson was not an easy one, but I’m glad I learned it.
America is the land of the free. From the moment of its birth to now, Americans have boasted in their country for this reason. However, at some points in history this boast can be contradictory. When national identities began to form in society, they were formed from the ideas of freedom and individuality. Some people formed an identity that supported mainly individualism and freedom, but it did not consider slavery too much to begin with. This identity is the national identity of a free man’s country. The other identity held the same values except it excluded everyone but white males. This is a national identity of a white man’s country. As time grew on, these identities grew stronger. When they finally clashed they brought along
As far as I am concerned, moving to the United States has taught me a lot
World Studies Summer Homework Analytic Essay The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen has tremendous importance to the French History, as well as the Declaration of Independence has significant importance to the history of the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence had a huge significance to the United States, as the document declared our independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen limits the power of the crown, and authority of the government, and gives more freedom to citizens from the government and crown. Both documents have great importance, in both the United States, and French history.
For the last 18 years or so, we have been influenced and directed by parents, teachers, and other authority figures. We have been told when to get up, when to work, when to play, when to eat, sleep, come home, go out, etc., etc., etc. Now we are moving on. As we do, let me remind you of two principles we have been taught, the principle of freedom and the principle of success. As adults, a whole new world of personal freedom awaits us.
This was the great opportunity for me to continue my education in one of the best countries and also was the great opportunity for me to explore life outside of my hometown, meeting new people, and experience different culture, languages, and lifestyles. After coming to the USA, my family went through various tough times. The condition of our life became so worse that we did not have enough money to buy food, clothes, and to pay rent. Because of the scarce of money, I did not even buy my high school graduation gown and was about to not even attend my high school graduation, until my high school decided to give graduation gown for free. Therefore in order to help my family financially, I started working on part time jobs such as sales associate and tutoring while attending full-time college. Although in the beginning I started working on part time jobs just for the sake of money but as time passed, I was able to appreciate the skills I got from working that is social skills, communication skills, presentation skills, team works skills, leadership skills, and the time management skills. These skills were very important for me as far as my personal development was concerned as I learned how to effectively communicate with people and how to teach students of different ages with different strengths and weaknesses. This experience helped me to grow and mature as a person by facing
In conclusion to this essay on “what is autonomy”, I think that some people may argue that autonomy, competence, freedom, self-determination and self-respect have a lot of pro’s and con’s. These are values that give us meaning to our life whether it is done autonomously or not. A person that has self-respect will sooner or later realize that they also have freedom to make choices that are autonomous. These values will always remain related to each other somehow, so therefore, separating an autonomous person, a self-determined person and a freedom person will never exist.
In my beliefs independence can not be the definition of what your government says is independent. For if you go by what the government says is independent than why not go by Chinas definition of independence, or by the communists party’s definition of independence. If you go by any governments definition of independence than you are not truly going to be independent. For each governments definition of independence you are not truly independent. In my belief to be truly independent you must be able to do what you want when you want and have nobody to say that you cant do that. If the government is telling you that you can do this and not do that then how can you have independence. The only true way to have independence is to make decisions based on you and not based on what society thinks. How can a person be truly independent if they have to do what other people think is the right thing to do? The answer to that question is that they can not be independent for independence is the ability to do what you want even if it is not what society thinks that it is not the right thing to do. These beliefs is one of my building blocks for my definition of independence.
With your independent spirit, you can teach and help people how to find their independent spirit. It can help others by going through daily routines. By doing this, he or she can get a feel on how to take care of him or herself.
What impact does your family make on you? Do your folks encourage you to become an individual who demonstrates responsibility throughout all their actions? Or do they encourage you to take help from them whenever needed because sooner or later they won’t be able to assist you with all that troubles you? The way your parents raise you through your growing years determines what type of a person you are. When children are disconnected from their guardians, they have to find solutions to all their problems on their own, as well as, control all their feelings and emotions without any assistance. Children without parents can only look up to their leaders and they are the ones who control the children’s behavior. Dictators treat children a certain way, that is almost never understood by the ones who love and care for them.
I’ve always been very independent, from a young age, mostly when it came to academics, or anything work-related. (clubs, etc) Independence has helped me become a a better problem solver, because I figure things out by myself. However, I’m still very much an extrovert, I’m independent in mostly just the academic range.
