In society today, pickpocketing and dumpster diving aren’t the only ways people are stealing identity, but now they are using the internet to steal and catfish people. When people use these techniques to obscure their identities it is wrong in any situation for many reasons, one being that it is deceitful. Deceitful is defined as having the tendency or disposition to give false impressions (Merriam-Webster). In these instances people are lying about their original identity while using another person’s personal information to become that person, in most cases for money purposes. That means that each year almost 12 million people have their identity stolen by these thieves. The thieves then use the stolen information to lie about who they are in order to obtain items they couldn’t acquire using their own name (“Identity Theft”). One reason that it is wrong for someone to obscure their identity in the instance of identity theft is simply because it is illegal. When someone uses another person’s identity or writes down someone’s personal information with the intent to use it they are breaking the law. There are a variety of different punishments for this including incarceration ranging from a year to several years, fines that could potentially exceed over $5000, restitution, or probation ranging from a year to three or more (Theoharis). In regards to legal issues dealing with identity theft, sometimes the victim ends up paying the price. One instance of this was in the case of a man named Malcom Bryd. A man used his identity and then racked up a criminal record including traffic violations, drug possession and drug distributing. Bryd has been arrested multiple times for crimes he didn’t commit and has been dealing with the identity theft since 1998 (Sullivan). In our world today obtaining medical care is an issue in which many people struggle with, especially when it comes to providing it to children. World hunger is also a major problem people from all over the world face everyday. Despite these difficult circumstances, I personally would never feel the justification to steal in order to save a child's life. There around 42.2 million americans living in food insecure households, this includes 13.1 children. Due to many people living in these situations there many other ways in which one can resolve these issues, it is just a matter of looking for them.
Each year around 15 million United States residents are affected by Identity Theft. This causes financial losses of around $50 billion per year. The average amount of money stolen per victim is $4950! That is a lot of money that is just taken from people with little things they can do to affect their identity from being stolen. The most common age group for Identity Theft is 18-24. The 18-24 age groups hold over 20% of all Identities stolen. Did you know that around 6% of adults are affected by Identity Theft? People who steal other peoples Identities are just really rude. Most people work very hard to earn their money and when it gets stolen from them it is just wrong. According to statistic brain the Identity Theft fraud rate is growing very slowly each year, but it needs to be stopped completely.

Identity theft can also be part of or enable other types of crimes such as bank, credit card, document, employment, or immigration fraud; robbery; and burglary, for example (Finklea, 2010, p. 2). Identity theft exists on a continuum with simple unauthorized credit card charges on one end all the way to having one’s identity completely assumed by another.
What determines right and wrong? Is it ever acceptable to steal? I'm sure most people can recall a childhood moment when they have accidentally taken an item without it being payed for and either felt guilty or didn't realize it was wrong at all. There are several types of theft and reasons for stealing. Like stealing from a hotel room would not seem as wrong as stealing someone's identity. There is also stealing for luxuries or for necessities.
III. Thesis Statement: Identity Theft is rapidly becoming a national issue because anyone of us could be a victim of identity theft. How we protect our self, keep our information private, identify any signs of identity theft, and report and repair our credit is up to each one of us. We have to be vigilant about our protecting ourselves from criminals.

According to Sally Driscoll, this is because almost anyone with a computer and a slight bit of computer knowledge can pull off identity theft. Experts also claim that identity theft is the fastest-growing crime in the world. Identity theft is a global problem that cannot be stopped without effective measures. The problem is, effective measures are very hard to come by when dealing with identity theft because almost any security protocol can be by-passed.

Whether it is malicious or a release for the person; It is an escape from reality in most cases. This alerts us to the dangers of social media, and makes us wary of meeting new people online, as all may not be what it seems.

In conclusion, identity theft is illegal, unethical and very dangerous to the victim. This is because identity theft can cause a lot of financial and reputation damage to the victim and his/her family. It is a shame that there are so many cases of this crime in the world today. Having said all of this, it is really important to prevent identity theft by being careful of your actions. However, as technology is advancing, it is becoming more and more harder to do so. Due to this fact, it is important for each individual to know what identity theft is and what they can do to prevent it from happening. After this is accomplished, identity theft will be minimized and this world will be a better and safer place.

It is now easier to pretend to be someone or something else thanks to the interent. We can all probably agree that we have one or two false social media account where we truly speak what is on our mind without facing any consequences for our words. Everyone’s online identity is false because it allows them to create an ideal or fake persona, use social media to trick others online for personal gain, stalk others online which gives us the feeling of how do we keep falling for these false online identites and what do we consider real of fake online.
