How have humans impacted the grizzly bears environment
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
Grizzly bears are enormous bears; that, tend to be misunderstood by others. Many times, they are portrayed wrongly in movies and tv shows. People may go off by things they see; in the movies and immediately suggest that’s the way the grizzly bear is. If others took the time to find information on the grizzly they would see how wrong the movies are about them. For many people grizzly bears can be a mystery such as where they live, what they eat, and whether they hibernate or not. However, with a bit of research answers can be found.
Many may not have known, but grizzly bears once lived in most of western North America; and even roamed the Great Plains. In the 1800's, grizzlies lived from western Minnesota to California and from central Mexico

north through Canada and Alaska. During this time European settlers began killing grizzly bears as they converted prairie habitat to farmland. A grizzly bear’s habitat includes a wide range of territories, including: woodlands, meadows, forests, river valleys, marshes and mountainous regions. Many also live near rivers, streams and coastal areas. By the 1900s grizzly bears were eliminated from most of the prairie states and provinces of central North America, including Minnesota. Today, most of the remaining grizzly bears that are left in North America; reside in Alaska and western Canada. There are about 30,000 grizzly bears that live in Alaska; and, about 1,500 grizzlies that still live in the United States. The grizzly bear has been found in: Montana, Utah, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Yellowstone, and the Rocky Mountains. In Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains; grizzly bears are beginning to grow in numbers, there are now about six hundred bears that stay in the Yellowstone National Park area. There are also about five hundred grizzlies that stay in the Rocky Mountains. This is good news to hear since it shows that the grizzly bear’s population is slowly growing; even with the rapid decline in the United States. There is also another thing that pops into a person’s mind when they think of grizzly bears: food.
Many may not have known; but, Grizzlies are not picky eaters. Grizzlies are opportunistic eaters, and will eat whatever is available to them at the time. This makes it easy for them to find food, because of the variety of foods they can eat. They are also omnivorous, meaning; they eat both plants and animals. A grizzly bear may eat plants; including: grass, roots, tubers, seeds, moths, wild berries, insects, fungi, nuts and other plants. They also will eat animals such as: small rodents, elk, bison, moose, carrion (decaying flesh of dead animals), salmon, trout, bass, crabs, and others. A misconception people tend to have is that the grizzly bear is stingy with its food and doesn’t like to be around other bears while eating. However, when there is much food in the area; the grizzly bear doesn’t mind eating with other bears. Although, once the food source has gone down; the grizzlie’s will go their separate ways to search for more food. A specific food that grizzly bears like to eat is salmon. Many times the salmon will return to the river, they were born in, and make their way upstream. Fishing for salmon in late summer is the best way for grizzlies get the food they can store up as fat. During this time the grizzly bears gorge themselves on the salmon, eating about 25 fish per day to put on extra weight. a quarter of the fish. They tend to concentrate on the fattiest portions, such as: the brains, skin and eggs. Morever, salmon aren’t always the easiest fish to catch. The grizzly bear uses seven different fishing styles while attempting to catch salmon. The cubs usually develop their fishing technique by watching their mother; and some bears are better fishers than others. The first fishing technique they use is stand and wait; this is when grizzlies stand on top of a rock or high place and wait for a salmon to jump close enough to catch in their mouths. Many grizzlies use this technique. The second style is when they sit and wait; bears will sit and wait for a salmon to swim near them; then quickly pin it down with their paw. The third style grizzlies use to catch fish is dash and grab; this is when the bear will try to chase the fish and attempt to pin them to the river bottom with their paw. The fourth style is snorkeling; this is when the grizzly bear looks for the fish under the water. The fifth style is pirating; the bear will try to steal fish from the other bears. When this happens a smaller bear may run away with their fish to eat it alone. The sixth style is diving, this is when a bear completely submerges itself seeking a fish. The seventh style is begging; bears do not share food with other bears, but some bears will still attempt to beg from others. Whether the bear succeeds in this method, depends on the particular bear’s status. The last most confusing thing about the grizzly bear is whether they hibernate or not. Many may wonder or not if the grizzly bear hibernates, the answer is yes.
grizzlies will hibernate when there is a seasonal shortage of food, low environmental temperatures, or when there’s snow arrival. Grizzly bears hibernate five to seven months each year. The grizzly will enter into hibernation in October or November. During this time the grizzly bear must prepare a den and consume as much food as possible to last their hibernation period. While searching for a den the grizzly may travel many miles until it finds a suitable area that it likes. The dens are usually at elevations above 1,800 m (5,900 ft) on north-facing slopes. The reason why bears have to eat as much food as possible is because they need the energy from the food to last through the entire winter. They may eat up to 90 lbs of food per day, while trying to put on as much weight as possible. When it’s time for grizzlies to hibernate; will enter their den, and fall into a “deep” sleep. During this time the grizzlies won’t eat or drink; but instead they digest their stored up fat; (the fat used to last them through their entire hibernation.) The bear also will not urinate or defecate, but will reabsorb their urine and feces into proteins. The bear can use 25-40% of their body weight during hibernation; the bear’s heart rate and body temperature may also drop. By March or April, male grizzly bears usually emerge from the den and the females emerge in late April or May. When bears emerge from hibernation they’re
in a state of “walking hibernation” for several weeks. The bear may appear “drunk” or in a stupor, until their bodies get back to normal. This cycle repeats itself each year. Many people may have first jump to conclusions on the grizzly bear; but now, they should know more about its species. The grizzly bear is not the same, as it is seen in the movies or in tv shows. It is not just a big, scary animal that is just seen in the zoo, or in national park reserves. The grizzly bear is an animal with a background, and all that was needed was a bit of research to find it all out.

Grizzly bears live in a variety of environments .All of which includes dense forests, subalpine meadows, open plains and arctic tundra . In the past though, they could be found from Alaska to Mexico, and from California to Ohio. Though Nowadays there are efforts trying to make it so grizzly bears can make a comeback and the wild, and all of their efforts are proving to be working, there are 4 times as many grizzlies in the wild as there were in 1975, at
Good literary text can communicate messages more powerfully than good informative text. 2 different texts, Moon Bear Rescue by Kim Dale, and the brochure Southern Asian Moon Bears, are chosen to represent in the argument between literary and informative. Both books are similarly capable of delivering a message, but which is more powerful? Informative clearly states the facts and provide consecutive information; raises awareness for the objective, i.e. Moon Bears, whereas the literary tends to tell more of a story, perhaps information, adapted to entertain the reader, and sometimes, to educate. Because of this, I feel that the literary is much more capable of providing a powerful message, mostly informative text lacks the friendly and heart-warming story that the literary text provides.
Now even though these bears help the environment so will other bears. The Grizzlies are just another species of the many species of bears why are these bears more important than other bears. As we find from the GNWT: “Grizzly Bears in the NWT occur primarily in open alpine or tundra habitats, but they can also be found in forested areas. They have large home ranges relative to most other bear species. On average, a male’s range can exte...
Wolves had live throughout parts of the world for thousands of years before humans just kept rising in population and minimizing the wolves’ population through the expansion of their territories for farm agriculture and industrialization. It is only in the United States where humans completely annihilated wolves; they did this by hunting the wolves down until the last wolf was killed in 1926. However, in 1995, 14 wolves were caught from Canada and release into Yellowstone National Park. This makes it almost 70 years since the wolves have been reintroduced back into Yellowstone National Park (17 July 2009)
Although they are now rare, grizzly bears inhabit the dense forest of Montana’s Rocky Mountains. Grizzlies grow as tall as eight feet and can weigh up than 1,000 pounds, yet they can move as fast as a horse. There are six national grizzly recovery zones, and three are in Montana. They are Cabinet-Yaak, Northern Continental Divided, and Yellowstone (Av2 books).
Many hundreds of years ago wolves roamed the entire North American continent with no barriers and very few predators. As settlers moved into the United States, wolves became more and more scarce in the wild of America. As the wilderness areas of the United States declined, so did the population of the wolf, until there were only a few spots in the wild where wolves could still be found.
When Europeans first settled in North America the white tailed deer were found only in southern parts of Canada.
One of the biggest reasons for the reintroduction of wolves back into Yellowstone was that they had originally roamed from Yellowstone all the way down to Mexico. While a lot of people were in favor of the reintroduction of the wolves, there were many who were against it. The main people who were against the reintroduction of the wolves back into the park were the ranchers who made a living in the areas surrounding the park.
Out of an Ice Age emerged one of our most majestic creatures in the world the polar bear. From its brown bear ancestry, the predator evolved to be a master of a harsh and unwelcoming ice kingdom. Intelligent, adaptable and fierce, the polar bear learned how to survive in a place that offers few comforts to any creature. But now that very environment is in flux. And so is the polar bear’s fate (Nature). Polar Bears are very different from other bears. Polar bears are very large bears compared to Black bears. Polar bears weigh anywhere between 330-1700lbs and Black bears weigh anywhere between 150-600lbs. They have strong legs with large, flattened feet with some webbing between their toes that help with walking on ice and swimming. The wide paws prevent sea ice from breaking by distributing weight while walking. Their paws allow them to pull a 600 pound seal out of its breathing hole (Rosing, 20). The webbed feet results in making polar bears, unlike other bear species to be considered as marine mammals along with seals, sea lions, walruses, whales and dolphins (Polar Bear). According to Rosing Polar bears are excellent swimmers and have been known to swim up to six miles an hour and as far as 60 miles at a stretch. The bears paddle with their front feet and steer with their back feet. They often overheat. Sometimes they venture into the waters just to cool off. When a bear climbs on an ice floe, it shakes itself off because it is trying to prevent ice from forming on its fur (22-23). Because of climate change and hunting of polar bears are now becoming an endangered species which is affecting the food chain. We can fix this by going green, banning polar bear hunting and keep creating these new hybrid bears that are mixed with griz...
These categories are broken down into different genetics of bear species. The most common bear found in Alaska is the black bear. The black bears are smaller than most bears. They are found in almost all states in the US except Hawaii. Most are found in forest, but some may be found in swamps and mountains. An estimated 100,000 black bears live in Alaska.
One way that the environment impacts the animals is that the animals such as bears adapt and store their energy in the winter. This is also known as hibernating. “Animals in the mountains have also adapted to save energy during the harsh winter months.” (Cassandra Maier, Adaptations of plants and animals to mountains) When animals hibernate, they are less active during the winter, and they just sleep for most of the day. Other animals such as the goat and deer do not hibernate during the winter,
Have you ever wondered why pandas are going extinct? People have been hunting pandas since 1869 mostly for their unique fur pattern and because there was a drastic decrease in pandas in China the Chinese started making it illegal to hunt these giant creatures. Although, with any animal that is hunted we cannot blame these hunters for making pandas almost extinct (though they had a big role)—pandas were made illegal to hunt in the early 1960 . So what is the biggest reason that these bears are going extinct? Well that has more to do with the bear’s reproductive systems and when estrus occurs.
In an interview with GlobalNews.com Glenn Ennis, the stuntman and actor who plays the bear, says “What’s interesting if often, an attack will be quite violent for a brief bit, and then the bear becomes seemingly calm. Has a graze, takes a little break, and then goes back to being very vicious and violent. We thought it was like a cat playing with a mouse. It runs the show, it’s a non-emotional creature, and probably feels like it has nothing to fear”. This is exactly how the bear was acting in this film.
