Fast food is killing Americans
Why is fast food not good for the American population? Fast food refers to food that can be prepared and served within a short time period. Fast food has been really popular because they serve cheap food that taste good and also doesn't cost much money. But most often, the food contains cheaper ingredients with high cholesterol that contain a lot of fat instead of nutritious ingredients with low fat. A majority of Americans today consume fast food. According to a new study School of Medical Sciences at Australia’s University of New South Wales, junk food can alter behavior by causing lasting changes in the brain’s reward circuiting; an alteration that triggers obesity. As reported in an article by daily beast, “Every year, at least 310,000 Americans go to an early grave and many more are sickened because of largely preventable diet-related conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, strokes, and some cancers”(Warner, 2013). The American diet over the last century, has undergone unprecedented change. Most percentage of the calories Americans eat now are made from highly processed food with a lot of calories from fat. Studies show that eating fast food is linked to weight gain and insulin resistance(lancet, 2005). In other words, fast food makes you fat and increases your risk of type 2 diabetes. Also, Even “healthy” fast food is not that healthy. Fast food restaurants are trying to carter for consumers needs to cook healthier options. The issue here is that their meaning of “healthy” is not what someone else may consider healthy. One of the healthiest meals at McDonald is the artisan grilled chicken sandwich which still has almost 500 calories and 28 grams of fat, and nearly a day’s worth of sodium. Furthermore, pictures tell a thousand lies. There are people out there who already know this. Those pictures seen are not real burgers. Fast food companies put in a lot of work into designing and editing these pictures so that the burgers look mouthwatering. Although this might not be a reason to stop the consumption of fast food, billions of animals are slaughtered every year in the U.S. to supply meat to these fast food restaurants. Animals used for meat are not naturally fed or grown. These animals are fattened using chemicals and substances not quite healthy to either the animal or the people consuming it. Thousands of these animals are kept in the same area with lack of sunlight which prevents healthy growth. Moreover, fast food causes depression and addiction.
It has been found that depression affects closely to one hundred and twenty one million people world wide. Researches have linked depression to fast food eating habits. People who eat fast food compare to people who do not are more likely to have depression. “Even eating smaller quantities is linkd to a significant higher chance of developing depression”, as the researchers point out. And also, some research suggests that fast food may be addictive. According to a September 2011 article in “Current Drug Abuse Reviews", people who eat fast food turn to show a more addictive behavior towards the consumption of these
meals. Despite the fact that America have so many fast food restaurants serving junk food, there is always a chance for the American population to eat healthy. There are previous studies which suggest that certain nutrients have a preventive role which can lower the effect of fast food. Researchers have suggested group B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acid and olive oil to be a good option. Minimizing the consumption of fast food to may be once a month could greatly reduce or stop the occurrence of the health issues listed above. Plus, if the American population really care about their love ones dying before their lives are really over, or having to endure preventable diseases which bring about high medical bills they will end up sharing, then its strongly advisable for Americans to minimize the percentage space of processed food on their plates at each meal.
We hear it all the time, regarding how fast food is bad for our health, and yet we continue eating it. Life doesn’t slow down and sometimes it is just much easier and better for you timewise to just go through the drive through. In the article “Fighting the Fast Food Habit: Can America Downsize?” it basically says that even though most of the fast food chains and food suppliers are trying to decrease the unhealthy options on their menus, it is too late for it because of our eating habits. We want the unhealthy food. Companies are going to market to what the consumer wants. That’s how they make their profits. To sum it all up, companies are food options it a little healthier, but not for us, they only do as much that is needed for people to keep buying it and still feel like they are eating a little healthier. (Garcia 94) Just because a company says they are making changes doesn’t mean you’re eating healthy. It simply means they are making the food and drinks people are consuming a little healthier, however, it still shouldn’t be considered healthy. They do what they have to do to make money. One out of every three Americans is obese and the majority of these obese people in the United States have eaten regularly at fast food restaurants. As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. With the pressure to get things done in a timely manner, fast food became a big necessity. However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension” (May, Kuklina, Yoon). The food that they provide is made to be eaten quickly, causing problems for the digestive system. Also, the health problems lead to the use for health insurance, which adds to the costs of Medicare. Health care costs will only worsen an already failing economy. Therefore, the government should regulate fast food restaurants in the United States in order to repair the deteriorating health and economy in America.
What is happening to our economy is that so many people are going to these fast food restaurants because they are basically on just about every corner. So, for adults that makes it easy if they didn’t have anything planned for dinner because they can just pick something up from the local fast food restaurant on their way home from work. Also, it is very cheap. For example, a bundle at McDonald’s can feed up to four people at one time and it only costs about fifteen dollars! So, in the long run, it is just easier to go pick up some fast food rather than wasting your time cooking an actual meal. Lastly, even though fast food is very cheap and on every corner, it is not healthy at all. Studies have proven that a person that ate McDonald’s for his meals for a full month ended up having some serious health changes. In conclusion, even though it is very easy to access and very cheap, fast food has some serious health issues and be very harmful.
Obesity is an epidemic in America. Fast food can be compared to the same type of mindless addiction as cigarettes, and can be equally as dangerous. Not only is there a problem with fast food restaurants, but the food industry as a whole. Slaughterhouses that control 80% of the market produce meat in such a way that is not healthy for consumption, in turn the products are doused in harmful chemicals and still served to the public. No wonder the obesity rate in America is 69% and rising. Obesity is a true problem in our country- people are neglecting their health and quite literally eating themselves to death.
The Western Diet mainly consists of fried foods, refined grains, sugar, high carbohydrate and fats, and meats (3). It has been hypothesized that having a Western Diet increases one’s chances for developing depression. There has been a great deal of research into why the western diet increase’s one chance of having depression. A common sense reason maybe that the Western Diet consisted of large amounts carbohydrates, fats and sugars which promotes obesity and then causes depression (1). More scientific evidence suggest that having a improper diet like the Western Diet negatively affects peripheral and central dopamine, which are neurotransmitters (chemical which transmit signals across the synapse from the nerve cell to the target cell) directly linked to the mental health of the brain and are negatively affected by high fat diets (4). Research has also suggested that having a poor nutrition status such as lacking folate (a natural water form of vitamin bg which is crucial for many of the bodies processes) and key vitamins like vitamin b12 significantly increases the risk of depression in elderly people (5). Research into the topic of dietary habits and mental health is very crucial with the growing rates of obesity and depression in the United States compared to the rest of the world. Thus, does having poor dietary habits increase the likelihood of having depression? The likelihood of developing depression has been linked to the type of diet one consumes such as the Western Diet, Diets Low in Fat and Carbohydrates and weight control diets like binge eating.
Nevertheless, some people insist that fast foods, such as chips, hamburgers and fizzy drinks, that are so cheap and tasty, are not a consequence of the health problems. However, I strongly disagree that fast food has no bad impact on people’s health. Take a second to understand why fast food firms choose to sell products that are unhealthy. Their unhealthy products are in a high demand in the food market; in fact, they are simply giving us what we demand for. Most firms have started putting food labels on their menus so there is no room for excuse when making the right food choices. Nobody is forcing us to eat a whole box of Krispy crème donuts or a super-size meal at McDonalds. I believe that we are always looking for shortcuts in life and now we can anticipate there is a shortcut in what we put into our bodies. Not only is it not good to intake so much fast food, but this can hurt many college students’ mentality. “The study found a dose-response relationship between fast food consumption and depression, meaning the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression” (Berry). Our future generations suffering from high risk of depression can lead society to distress. When a huge age group is affected, this can affect each one of us, directly or indirectly. Future doctors, lawyers, engineers, musicians, teachers, and many other professors who go through college may suffer depression.
Fast food contains high amounts of salt, sugar, fat, and preservatives. Americans in today’s society want food and they want it now. The food options in fast food generally are also over portioned, high in fat, carbs, and sodium. When customers choose to eat the meals because of how cheap the meals are, they are demonstrating the eating style that is becoming more and more relevant in today’s society. The process they use to make the food is very efficient, so efficient it makes you question if the food is really food. All the food is processed, all made in a factory somewhere, using god knows what kind of ingredients, then frozen and shipped to all the restaurants over America.
