An issue that has created much debate over the years is that if competitive sports are good for children. There are different sides to this argument. One side says that competitive sports are not good for children while the other side argues that competitive sports are beneficial for children. When children participate in sports, the activity will make the skills needed later in life. For example, teamwork and promote healthy activity to grow in order to have a long healthy life. According to “The Top 7 Mental Benefits of Sports” written by Kathryn Watson, which was medically reviewed by Peggy Pletcher a medical expert, shared the facts with us "When you are physically active, your mind is distracted from daily stressors. This can help you avoid getting bogged down by negative thoughts" (Watson, 2016). In addition, the same author wrote "The regular exercise that comes with playing sports can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. As your strength, skills, and stamina increase through playing sports, your self-image will improve as well" (Watson, 2016). Also, in the passage “15 eye-opening facts about youth sports” written Janis Meredith who is a writer from the National Football League shares with us a piece from Sports Illustrated "Kids are learning good things from sports. Sixty-seven percent learn to be a team player. Sixty-seven percent meet people they wouldn’t have otherwise meet. Forty-two percent develop discipline. (Sports Illustrated)" (Meredith, 2018). Some people believe young kids who participate in competitive sports is a good idea. Sports offer many benefits, but the question is, should those benefits override the dangers? From what I have gathered, I would have to agree with those in favor of not playing competitive sports so young. I think this because of the severe, life changing injuries, emotional damage, and pricy fees.
Competitive sports are a very hot topic right now, and people have different views on children participating in them. Some may think that competitive sports help children to be healthier, because they are very active during practices and games. Although this is a good reason, sports can lead to concussions and other dangerous injuries. The truth of the matter is that sports can be very dangerous, and they can lead to many other problems. Children shouldn’t be playing competitive sports because they can get concussions or other dangerous injuries, they can develop excessive amounts of stress, and they can develop poor attitude.
Sports play an important role in American culture, with the top four most popular being football, baseball, basketball and ice hockey. These professional athletes make millions of dollars through their annual salaries and endorsements. Many wonder how they got to where they are today and was it worth it. There are mixed messages about participating in sports as a child and how it affects their development. Some believe that sports will help their child develop better communication skills, self-confidence and build character, while others believe that young athletes will develop aggression traits such as bullying, competitiveness, and aggressiveness. Although some believe that sports participation as a child will lead to aggressive children, there is ample evidence through research that sports benefits a child’s cognitive, social, and, physical development.
Some think that competitive sports is good for younger children but, some people don't think it's a good idea. I personally think that younger children should not play competitive sports. Research shows that playing competitive sports is not good for you. My first reason is that sports have become a lot more competitive for kids. My second reason is that, if children lose a game when they played their heart out, most likely they will lose their self-esteem. My third reason is that people can overplay one certain sport and get burnt out on that sport.
Engaging in sports plays a significant role in promoting health and wellness among children and adolescents. Although sports participation provides numerous physical and social benefits, it also has a downside: the risk of sports-related injuries. Many children and adolescents are treated in the emergency department each year for sports and recreation-related injuries. However, by playing competitive sports, you can keep obesity rates down, you can have a very strong mental health, and lastly, you can insure a healthy lifestyle for your future self.
Overall youth competitive sports have many pros, like teaching kids many important life lessons that they can keep with them their whole lives. Some believe that youth sports are bad for kids because kids can sustain serious injuries, but the pros like learning life lessons outweigh the cons by a lot. For example, the life lessons that sports teach are learning how to work as a team. Sports also teach kids to be better leaders. I think the world would be better if more kids would play youth competitive sports because they could learn skills like how to be a good leader which the world is lacking right
Youth sports can be really helpful to kids just for working hard and showing their effort. “Competitive athletes can lead to many positive psychological developments and health benefits,”(M.LaVoi 1). Participating in sports can lead to many beneficial things it’s a great opportunity to start playing to start gaining. “Children learn about teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship,”(D.Keener 1). Kids not only are playing just for fun and all, on the way they can also learn better manners that can help them be better citizens in the future. Not only youth sports can be beneficial to kids it can also be a great future for them just because their participation as a kid.
An issue that has created intense debate, is the topic of, should kids be able to play in competitive sports? Some people say that kids shouldn't be allowed to play in competitive sports, for it is promoting bad behavior in adolescents. Along with others who think that competitive sports are good for children, because it is good for them because it helps them develop skills that they need when they get older. It is clear that competitive sports are good for children, because it makes sure children have a good healthy weight, and it lets them let out emotions such as stress.
Kids should not play competitive sports because they are stressful, expensive, and dangerous. The first reason that kids should not play competitive sports is that they are stressful. According to LiveStrong, “The mounting pressure to play well can increase stress and make children feel bad and lose confidence should they make mistakes or lose” (Huggins 2017). Kids want to be recognized and rewarded, so winning can cause them to experience lots of pressure. However, if they do not win, they might lose confidence and self-esteem, which adds on another con.
Children who participate in sports are developing rapidly in sports skills, sportsmanship, and psychologically, but does this come from organized sports are just nature’s process. Children develop emotional and social benefits from participating in sports. Children experience character and leadership development through peer relations leading to an increase in self-esteem and a decrease in anxiety levels. Children will get opportunities to experience positive and negative emotions throughout their practice and games trials. It is important for the coach to understand the “psychology of youth sports and physical activity participation” (Weinberg & Gould, 2011 p.516).
Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding that jobs were given out instead of earned, and that money had no value because everything was free. Now imagine that tomorrow there are no prizes for those who won them and that sports were just things people did to pass time. Nothing to win, No one to crown champion. If that sounds awful than consider continuing to have competition in youth sports because if sports aren’t competitive, then what else is. The benefits of sports range from physical, mental, and social. Exercise keeps people fit, develops healthy muscle tone, and reduces heart and lung problems (Oak, Manali). Sports studies have shown that “youth are motivated and engaged in ways that do not happen regularly in any other parts of their lives. Their experience of sports stands out from nearly all other activities, including socializing and schoolwork, in providing enjoyment where they are exerting concerted effort toward a goal” (Larson, Reed, and Sean Seepersad). People who play sports bond over a common interest. This opens up children to meeting new kids and socializing with many more. In Kindergarten, I played baseball. Even though I did not truly understand all the mechanics of the game, I met new friends and began to develop motor skills. This was very useful starting at an early age and pushed me to stay active throughout my life.
