I am playing basketball and my team is about to win the state championship. I go to school the next day, I sit down and my teacher gives me my report card. I got really bad grades and I remember that my coach said that we need good grades to play on the team. Now I have to go to basketball and tell my coach. How am I going to tell my parents and my coach? I go home and give my parents my report card. My parents cry out, “omg you can’t play on the team any more.” “You know how hard your team worked to get where you guys are at, and now you are letting your team down . Go to your room now Gabe!!!” Now I am scared what my coach is going to say about this. I go to basketball, my team is in line to give our coach our report card so we can play on the team. Every one got good grades but me. It is my turn to give my coach my report card but he has to go to the back for something but i want to get it over with and am so scared. I am biting my nails sweating on my forehead waiting for coach to come back he finally came back he says when i give him my report card , “what happened?” I tell him, “ I am not doing good in school”. The special event that changed my life was deciding to play basketball because basketball helped me find peace, happiness and gave me identity. When I was ten years old my grandfather succumbed to cancer. His death created hatred inside of me.
On my first year of middle school, I was so excited because I finally could try out to be on a school softball team. I never played travel ball, only recreation softball so I've never actually been on a team that I tried out for. Over the summer I went to batting practice and fielding to get ready for the year. This is my year, I thought ready to tryout and make the team. The day came to where I had to show what I could do to the coaches. It took a while for the tryouts to actually commence because there was so much rain that week that it kept getting pushed back. This made more nervous, I just wanted to get it over with. I worked hard throughout the tryouts, but when I went up to bat I could not hit the ball. I tried many times but I couldn't do it. I felt terrible because everyone else hit great. I was embarrassed. I freaked out, this is what could ruin my chance to be on the team. Even then I still tried my best.
Basketball is a great sport for people that like to run because basketball involves running up and down the court.. Some people like basketball because they like the idea of the sport or the competition. Most people have something specific that they like about basketball. For instance: Some people like free throws better than threes. Everyone has a different opinion about the game or perspective of the game that they like or dislike about it.
I continued my walk of shame all the way to the bench. I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw my coach standing in the doorway in his office. I turned my head and looked him in the eyes. He shook his head and quickly turned away. Oh man, I really messed up this time. Am I going to get playing time this year? Will this affect the rest of my basketball

Track season was getting ready to start and I was excited for it because I love to run. This was my first year in high school so this would be my first time to get to be on a high school track team. I went to the first practice, which was conditioning day, and ran as hard as I could. No matter how hard I was hurting or sweating I keep running and finished in the top group every time. Practice comes to an end and coach calls up runners individually and tells us what we are going to be running. He calls me up and I am just knowing that he is going to say the 200 or 400. To my disappointment he tells me I am going to be running the 300 hurdles. I hated the hurdles so to myself I told myself I wasn’t going to practice hard because it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wouldn’t practice hard so I got put on JV. I won all the JV races in the 300 hurdles so that just pushed me to not want to practice even more because I could win without practice. District track meet rolls around and Trey one of the varsity runners gets hurt so coach moves me to varsity. In my mind I am thinking this is going to be easy I haven’t lost a race on JV so I won’t lose on varsity. The intercom comes on and calls out for my race. It was time to go win.

In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
This past fall I tried out for the varsity basketball team at my high school. I had played both on the freshman team and then last year on the junior varsity team. Playing on the varsity team is all I’ve wanted to do. I’d practiced all summer and in September and October to get ready for the try-outs at the beginning of November. Unfortunately I did not make the team. It was a huge blow for me because I had worked really hard and had expected to make it. Thankfully my moms and my friends were there to remind me that there were other paths to pursue my dreams. I could have easily been bitter and decided to stop caring, but they wouldn’t let me. I was humbled by this experience and decided to turn it into a positive. I’ve since decided to join the Wilson Live club at school. It’s a group that films and commentates sports events at school. This connects to a possible major that I’m interested in when I go to college--communications or sports
I have throughout my whole life been playing sports. I still play basketball competitively and now it’s at the university level. Basketball though was not my first love when it came to playing sports. It has though become my true focus since junior high school. Coming from Canada everybody plays hockey. Its almost as if as soon as you learn to walk you learn how to skate. Whether it is at the recreation centre or at the shinny rink around the corner everyone plays. Eventually I abandoned hockey to play basketball which I have done so for the last twelve years of my life and hopefully a few more years into the future.
For my person to meet is Michael Jordan. The reason why I picked Jordan is I like the sport and he plays basketball. I think I would have a fun time meeting Jordan because I can hangout with him and play some basketball. I also think meeting him can help me play basketball better and he can show me some tricks.
Every single meeting that I went to I would come in last. I saw myself not getting better and I started to get sick so I started to think about quitting track. One day I thought about skipping track and I did it but that one day turned into a week. In that one week I felt really happy and I didn’t had worries about anything except that I was feeling guilty. The guilt that was going through my mind was that I gave up on the team and everyone that cared about me in there. The next week I went back to track. Since I was a kid it was always my dream to play in an arena filled with tens of thousands of people. NBA arenas can hold anywhere from 17,000 to 22,000 screaming fans and to me nothing can compare to that. I have been inside an arena and the excitement and pressure you can feel is unreal. Millions of others share and have shared this dream with me. I feel that professional basketball has pushed kids to be better in school and be better people because to be able to play you have to be eligible. High school sports and the NCAA have done a great job on ensuring that athletes are well educated before they leave to go pro. If you don’t go to college it is very tough to go pro unless you are a for sure first round pick. These select few could end up playing overseas for a year and make some money instead of having to go to college
There I was all by myself, being verbally reprimanded by three adults and they wanted me to choose my punishment? I said that I would like to apologize to my team at the next day’s practice. My coach then told me that she wasn’t kicking me off the team but she thought it might be in my best interest to quit, which came as a complete shock to me. My parents had engraved in my mind that it is never okay to quit.
