Arthur Miller called his play The Crucible, the word Crucible has many different meanings. A crucible can be a metal container that many different substances can be melted down in. Another meaning for a crucible is a severe test or trial. When Arthur Miller came up with the name for The Crucible he was going off of the second definition. In this essay I will be explaining how the characters went through a crucible. How Arthur Miller could have named this play differently? Arthur Miller made this play very interesting for the readers and explained what a crucible is. John went through a crucible the whole play and had to go through lots of test and trials. When John was in court being questioned about his affair trying to save his wife. John was telling them he had an affair with Abigail because he was trying to prove that she committed legary. He was trying to save his wife's live because Abigail accused her of being a witch and John knew abagail just wanted his wife dead. Abigail wanted Abigail dead because she wanted John. It was mainly a mental battle for him. He was trying to figure out if the people were actually guilty of witchcraft. He was trying to help the people in the end get out of being killed. He left and then came back and said if John confessed to witchcraft he would be able to live. Reverend Hale had to make a decision on helping the people get free and save their lives. He knew all of those people had not been doing witchcraft but the only way the people could be free was if they confessed. John did not want to confess because he wanted to die with a good name so what reverend Hale did not help. “The Salem court had moved to admit "spectral evidence" as proof of guilt; as in 1952, the question was not the acts of an accused but his thoughts and intentions”
