Some individuals would find it strange how people enjoy reading fictional dystopian books with bleak and depressing stories, but readers look forward to escaping from reality and envision a world completely different from their own. But, one would be surprised by the similarities between the dystopian societies and societies today. 1984 is a novel written in 1949 by English writer George Orwell, follows the protagonist Winston Smith and his experience living in the dystopian society of Oceania. The society is run by an upper class group called the party and their leader “Big Brother”, who manipulate the citizens of Oceania to remain in power. Later on in the integration, O’Brien continues to state “Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing”(Orwell 276). O’Brien explains how the Party and Big Brother mentally attack individuals to remain in power, and allow society to be shaped to their desire. Luckily, in a democratic society like my own, no one has enough power to manipulate the population. The totalitarian government in Oceania led to the Party and Big Brother having all the power, as the democratic style of government in the United States leads to a balanced distribution of power. The two approaches to the division of political power are complete opposites of one another, yet they are both critical characteristics to defining the respective societies. My society’s allowance of the people choosing who is put into power is a core attribute that helps define it. In my society, there is significantly less oppression which allows individuals from lower classes to rise and make a better life for themselves. Earlier in the novel, when Winston had met up with Julia, he explained “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process continues day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right”(Orwell 158). The Party has controlled all aspects of history to prevent anyone from the lower class moving up in the social hierarchy. The power the Party has on the reality of the society allows them to manipulate the proles in their everyday life. In Oceania, the citizens are born into their social class where they exist for the rest of their lives, which helps the Party and Big Brother retain their power.
